  1. Don't miss the FAQ on Xara X to Be Released as Open Source · · Score: 1

    Read the FAQ.

They are explaining why they open the code and why they choose the GNU GPL.

I think that using the GPL is the only way for them to reuse features of Inkscape and other free projects that are missing from their product. We can ask ourself if they are not wanting to divert the Inkscape community.

However if the performance of their engine is as good as they claim, there maybe some interesting bits. Too bad cairo will not be to use some of them (Cairo is distributed under LGPL).
We can also expect them to contribute to the wxWidgets project at it is the library they choose for GUI components.

    Please, mod parent up!!!

Basing usability comparison on such uninformed statements can only be bad for the credibility of free software.
I'm fed up of "religious" software reviews from writers who write themselves: "I never bought MS Office after Office XP ,and I rarely ever used that".

David Johnson is not to blame. I'm blaming the editor who publishes this. Editors are not just messengers!

Don't worry so much. Carmack's talents are not wasted. He is already in the space business with his hobby: he's leading Armadillo Aerospace to work "on computer-controlled hydrogen peroxide rocket vehicles, with an eye towards manned suborbital vehicle development in the coming years".

This licence, contrary to LGPL, explicitely lists the Approved Interfaces in a file named EXCEPTION.
So if external code is linked to code not declared in this file, it is covered by the GPL.

Where the LGPL-like freedom stops is here: "Only Red Hat, Inc. may make changes or additions to the list of Approved Interfaces." So if you (assuming you are not Red Hat) want to add interfaces to a fork, they will be covered by the pure GPL as the exception clause will not apply.
