Cell phone companies did, to sell their stupid ringtones. They are known to cripple things, while Apple tends to make full-blooded products. But anyway, I don't think the 100 song limit is what killed the phone. Anyway, with a 512MB card the "natural" limit is around 160. More likely it's just not a good phone/mp3 player.
Why is that? If kernel has a frozen binary driver interface in series 2.7-3.1, what keeps Linus from resuming regular changes in version 3.2? If at that time Linux has a large market share and the new kernel has valuable features, it's a good bet device manufacturers will open source the driver rather than giving up a big chunk of their profits.
Dude, it's much easier to write malicious software in userspace and you are much more likely to want/be able to modify the source of a regular application than a device driver. Are you advocating removing a stable binary interface for regular programs to try to force companies to open source Doom 3, vmware and so on? If not, why pick on relatively unimportant device drivers.
Anyway, at this point vendors are doing Linux community a favor by releasing any kind of driver and are probably losing money by doing so. They should be encouraged in any way possible rather than giving them more requirements. If Linux ever reaches >50% marketshare, THEN make your demands.
When you're not at home, but someone breaks into your house and steals your stuff I'd say that using a computer that reflects only a small minority of those out there If you find service availability to be a problem for your Mac, set up a cheap Windows box.
Actually what's happening is you sell a house to Alice and she makes a lousy copy of one room for Bob using her own raw materials. Also it's likely that either Bob can not afford your house anyway or have never heard about it before and might purchase the complete building after sampling a couple of lousy room replicas. Finally, you won't even sell stuff to Bob because he is a minority. As a solution, you are asking him to take a shower in the prison and drop the soap.
First, copying is done by other people - it doesn't make sense to consider weather it's "voluntary" for somebody not involved. Second, file sharerers don't spread lies. I am a Mac user, and there are no services for me to legally download movies longer than 2 minutes.
Tell me more about your rootkit for Mac. So, say you duped the user into manually running a program on your CD rather than just importing it directly from iTunes. How are you going to install device drivers or hide your process from detection with access only to user's home directory? If you do find and exploit a new privilege-escalation hole, you are going to jail because you obviously hacked user's computer rather than just using a standard mechanism.
I dunno, it depends on weather people voted for a law that sets price controls for ice cream. If they also voted on a communist economy though, quarters and dimes are only useful as collector's items. You get syrup and ice for free, give out your ice cream cones to anyone who wants them and just take whatever you need for your normal life. Kind of like using GPLed software. Hmm...
That government can crack triple DES in more than 14 but less than 90 days on their secret supercomputer. No wonder they dropped opposition to crypto exports. The question is, which algorithms/key sizes can we use that is likely still uncrackable?
I don't know, you might want to ask Intel, IBM, Apple or Microsoft. If computers were sold as special purpose devices that could only run a preinstalled set of programs (say Office), they wouldn't really go anywhere. By providing an open platform, Neuros might get some killer game or say a mobile karaoke hack with lyrics and slideshow that will convince some group of consumers - say japanese teenagers - to get it instead of iPod.
Well, I am not religious, but say we were viruses studying the interior of a human cell. We would no doubt (correctly) conclude that all the processes within are caused by random heat motion of molecules and (incorrectly) that we evolved from random RNA mutation within that cell. We would never suspect however the incredible things that the whole human does. Neither would we be aware of the afterlife (being incorporated into cell DNA through reverse transcription and being part of mitosis) or coming judgement day (a T cell that gobbles us up). So while I don't have any evidence that those greater forces exist, I don't think science proves or disproves them. Hey, if they contacted me and wanted to have a chat on how to be a beneficial virus I would certainly listen. I just don't think the Pope or Christian Coalition are very credible sources to get my knowledge of divine matters:-)
Yeah, and then somebody will just step up war on drugs or charging people on skimpy evidence whenever the pharmaceutical/pestiside lobby needs more subject. The society shouldn't get any benefits from incarcerating people other than keeping dangerous criminals locked up. On the contrary, the disadvantages should be emphasized and in our faces.
My phone is a pda, has games, a camera, can browse the web. None of which I want, need nor use.
Well, why did you get it then? You could have saved $400 by buying a low-end phone without all these functions that would be probably better in terms of battery life and call quality. Me, I use all these functions. Browsing web or playing games is great when you have an idle half an hour. Built-in camera is great for taking pictures of your new contacts so that their faces show up when they call you. And PDA apps like MemoPad are great for taking quick notes. That's Treo 650, so it's somewhat more reliable/usable than Windows Mobile. Too bad they have gone to dark side.
Why are you supporting studios that are not willing to give you a convenient way to buy their stuff. I am sure there are some good local movies and they can not grow without your support.
Smart students are supposed to figure out the system, have a reasonable amount of fun and then show their integrity by not doing damage or creating unfair advantage for themselves. I had root on most systems in university and nobody worried much about it. Read Harry Potter and Enders Game and note that although it's fiction, the thrill of discovering secrets is what makes you really learn. There are always ways to catch those that truly abuse their knowledge.
Does it really require a proof that a competent programmer with access to full source code can fix a small bug in a few days, at the cost of perhaps $10000? Read ChangeLogs for Linux kernel, Apache, Netbeans or Firefox and look for all the corporate contributions. You might have heard of IBM adding a few enhancements to Linux kernel a while ago.
I don't see how a company can risk using Microsoft for any mission-critical task. If Linux or Apache break, that bug can be fixed at a trivial (for a business) cost of hiring a consultant. If Windows/IIS breaks, they are dead in the water unless they are the size of Dell and can actually make an impact on Microsoft's revenues. Even home users can type some stuff into bugzilla and have a reasonable chance of getting their problem fixed after a while.
Well, don't you want to graduate sooner so that you can stop piling up debt and start earning disposable income? Sounds like you are the last person who can afford to waste time on ads.
To preserve the history of species that went extinct because of drilling. Well, at least students will know there were other computers and operating systems before our new worm-infested overlords.
I did skydiving a couple of weeks ago and watch DVDs on my 23" cinema display all the time. Didn't try bungee yet, but I don't suppose it would be a big problem. While everyone has different hobbies, making too big of a deal of watching movies on an iMac (or for that matter, skydiving) would be right in DSM-IV under Phobias section. Of course, not phobias need to be treated, just the ones that interfere with your life. I have to control my Helminthophobia to use the Windows computer at work. I would say anything that prevents one from using a computer when it's appropriate needs to be looked at. If you live in a dorm and have limited space/resources, that's a smart choice. If you have a house, Tivo, cable and NetFlix, by all means stick with your TV.
Do they call a person "pro-choice" or "pro-abortion"? The term you choose shows your bias.
Well, I don't mind being called pro-abortion. I support clinics offering abortion and women choosing it if they want. Mincing words just suggests your are ashamed of yourself or your opinions. Think of "special education", "administrative assistant" or "overweight". Just so long as opponents honestly identify themselves as anti-abortition. I don't agree with their definition of life and besides they may well support killing people (including children and pregnant women!) in a war or withholding life-saving stem cell medical treatments.
I take it CMM-1 is the level where if the software suddenly causes monkeys to fly out of the butt of the user, that it is perfectly within the specification?
Why, that would be a perfectly acceptable behavior for anything described as "undefined" or "implementation-specific".
Try to see a doctor here in US. The last thing we need is to have to wait a month to see a programmer with an urgent problem, have to pay an astronomical price to cover his liability insurance and then have him poke all kind of unnecessary probes into backdoors of your computer to cover his ass in case you have a rare security condition.
Better just break up Microsoft and let competition take care of different people's security needs. If you buy an $20 game, don't expect it to be top-grade code. If you are willing to pay thousands and tolerate probes in your backdoors, somebody will be willing to accept liability if you have a break in.

Sure they do. Enjoy!

Windows badly needs a bundled Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware solution. Perhaps MS shouldn't be punished for doing the right thing for the users for once.
So you agree that Mac/Linux users have no viable alternative to using P2P for sampling music before deciding what to buy?
