    It's not just how you die, it's how you live. If you are killed in a car accident, you have lived your normal life right up to that point. On the other hand, if you have an abusive spouse with a gun or a gang-ridden neighborhood, you have to live in fear for years until the time when it is possible realized. Besides, when someone dies by a gun, there is usually at least one other person who either spends life in prison or lives forever with regret.

    you had to buy a separate word processor, compiler and such, but that's not really different from most computers of the late 1980's.

    There is nothing wrong in trying to make more money that way. But there is also nothing wrong with a customer modifying their own hardware or software to work better, as long as they can figure out how. And manufactures shouldn't be able to terminate warranty/support unless they can prove that the modification has a realistic, material impact on lifetime or stability of a product. So, if they are listing mean time to failure in product literature, they better be showing significantly shorter one for the faster printer.

    If you got a web browser in your BIOS you will probably want to update it one day. Like, when there is a critical security fix to prevent site A from grabbing your private data from site B - something that will not be addressed by not mounting your hard drive. A flash drive, with a physically adjustable write-protect knob, would do nicely. Else you would just have to stop using this feature after a couple of years or the first hardware upgrade and set up your own dual boot.

    Typically there are many more animal than human hosts, since the former usually do not go to hospitals or use cloth/house/DEET to protect themselves from mosquitos. So your altruism will likely protect a chimp or an antelope rather than another human. But mass vaccination of wildlife through baits dispersed from planes can really make a difference.

    The reason people don't have a problem with console DRM is that these are just games. Personally, I am glad I grew up with DOS games that I can still play better than ever on an emulator and will be able to share with my children. But, maybe the stuff being released nowadays is not worth sharing.

    Some of the engineering software that I use, mainly through my university, can cost in excess of $100k per seat depending on the optional components that you get.

    So?

    1. Most probably organizations using it commercially make at least tens of millions in profits while universities get educational pricing.
    2. When you make that much money, you got to be worried about potential of damages in a copyright lawsuit
    3. This software is probably impossible to use successfully without continuous support from the vendor
    4. Customers making such a huge investment should be worried about what happens if they need to make a change to the design 40 years later, when there are no USB ports to plug in the hardware key

    I think the reason both Microsoft and your vendor use DRM is pretty much the same:

    There isn't much direct competition

    Attribution - you can do anything you want with another person's work, but you can't pass it as your own
    Trademark - you can do anything you want with another person's work, but you can't pass the derivative as his/hers.

    I don't see what's the big deal. It's something that an honest person or business would be already doing even without any laws to the contrary.

    Do what you have to to protect your bottom line, but do not bullshit like this. Customer interests would be equally served with an unobtrusive alert that would let them know that the software is probably counterfeit but not interfere with their work.

    Although, I doubt it will really help MS financially. Everyone else is moving away from DRM - think of iTunes - and throughout the history of commercial software, most successful companies were the ones that stayed away from parallel port dongles, non-standard floppy formats or entering "word 6 on line 5 on page 15 of game manual". This included Microsoft until a few years back.

    Besides most of their profit comes from OEMs and business users. Neither group is likely to use counterfeit software. On the other hand, they will be royally pissed off if this affects even 0.01% of their users.

    If you are running Windows on an x86 box, this may be true. Move to FreeBSD on an ARM embedded display and getting the drivers becomes dicey. Want to optimize medical imaging requiring 48 bit color rather than a typical game? Bet you will have better luck with an FPGA than an off the shelf card.

    As soon as that trial is up they will charge the users for the same amount and because very few people use a computer for just a single year the cost is the same over-all.

    I beg to differ. Say, bank CD interest is 3%, which is on par with inflation. Say, also, that you carry some credit balance with interest rate of 15%. If you pay $500 to Microsoft now, you are out $575 (or 557 inflation-adjusted) a year later. If you save the money to pay off the credit card, you are only out $500, $485 adjusting for inflation, or $90 post-inflation better off than if you paid right away. Consider also:

    1. If you are hard-core honest, you would save $270 for your two desktops and one laptop.
    2. If you are a business with 100K seats, you are saving $9M!
    3. This doesn't even take into the account that you can always spends $0 at the end of the year if you don't like the OS or your financial situation changes.

    Never pay before you have to! 0% interest for 6 months, charge free installment payments etc are all good as long as you do remember to pay on time when the money is due.

    Maybe they would have a chance. After all, silicon valley has lots of well off people who probably don't like getting taxed. I personally would prefer some compromise between democratic, republican and liberetarian philosophies on economy. I think all of them have a point and any extreme fails in real world.

    However, to join the republican party, you have to subscribe to the whole package - particular brand of Christianity, social values, pot prohibition, use of torture, prosperity for starting wars, support for outsourcing, global warming denial. 90% of silicon valley residents would find at least one part of the thing more objectionable than paying a little more taxes in exchange for government leaving your private life alone and reining in your employer to some degree. Most immigrants are Hindu, Buddist or agnostic rather than Christian. For that reason alone, they would be inclined to support party whose nominee includes them in the inauguration speech rather than one who is pushing another religion.

    1) Criminals are dumb. Otherwise they would have figured out how to get rich legally, or at least on crimes less risky than a kidnapping
    2) Even if 10% of them slip up and use their own phone in an incriminating way, its better than nothing and saves some work for the understaffed police force
    3) Getting caught with a mugged foreigners' (let alone kidnapped person's) cell phone on your person doesn't help one's case
    4) If your girlfriend made a call to any cell phone triangulated to be around the crime's location around the time the crime took place, it's one good piece of circumstantial evidence.

    I think your Christian friends would fully understand. After all, how would they feel if their son/daughter had a lesbian teacher who made a wedding to her girlfriend a teachable moment? What if their child gets indoctrinated into homosexual lifestyle? I would imagine it would create quite a barrier with mom and dad.

    The problem is, this kind of thinking fragments our society into ever smaller groups. Kids only allowed to participate in activities of white, atheist, heterosexual friends will grow up friendless and intolerant. Will your son really see the bible any differently than a fairy tale reading if any follow up questions are answered by parents in a similar manner?

    CFLs wattage is significantly less than half of incadecent wattage. So, while this is an additional plus for LED lighting, this is still the most economical solution available otherwise.

    In any case, regular florescent lighting was in use for decades and nobody found it less efficient than any alternative.

    So the only way you are willing to contribute to the achievements of humanity is by taking the most glorious and exciting part of the task? Fine by me, go and apply to be part of the flight crew. Personally I don't think I am qualified, but I do think I could sit in bunker for 100 days. Funny thing though, when it comes to really selecting a crew, they might prefer someone who has already has a proven ability to sit in the metal box for 18 months without going bonkers.

    Sounds like it's time to pack your van and move to California. We are paying $20/hour to the cheapest handyman we could find and have to book his time weeks in advance. Home based daycares run for about $900/month, so you could beat your current salary just by taking in two children. Even with moderate IT skills, you should be able to do way better. Heck, if I could find a trustworthy programmer with basic skills to work on my own ideas 40 hours a week, for 3 times your salary, I would gladly hire him/her as a hedge against my regular day job.

I think most people have more pleasant, even though lower-paying choices. I just looked at my kid's eyes and I think, if it comes to that, she needs a sane dad more than XBOX360 or a 4 bedroom house.
