Hey dude, you're expecting Windows. If you want Windows, like its look, its feel and its smell, better stay with Windows.
Now, if you were really interested in GNU/Linux, you'd be reading the fantastic manuals and you would stop complaining that Linux isn't like Windows. You'd see that it have its own philosophy and most of the things you say that are missing are in fact there; just not the way you are used to see them.
Alas, people like you seem to forget about the essence of the GNU project. Its goal isn't to crush Capitalism and offer everything free to the cheap bastards (P2P file sharing way). It is there to give you something to start with. It is not meant to be the best and the latest. You get what *benevolent* people have done and be grateful for it. You want more, pay; either with your time or with money (pay someone to extend it or pay for a commercial program).
So to make my point again: If you want Windows, if you want its simplicity, buy Windows (or a product that is meant to be an alternative to the former)and use it. Otherwise, you'll need to put more efforts.
(I won't comment on the mania of copying Windows "features" AND presentations to GNU/Linux)
ps: Mouse middle button = paste almost everywhere. ps2: I bet that I'll get modded as a troll for this...
That's *so* good! Its just sad that Videotron are such a jerk company, which are probably still willing to collaborate with the CRIA.
Videotron is the cable / ISP division of Quebecor, which sales music records through Archambault and also produce records for its "artistic" reality show, Star Academie. That's why they are so eager to give names to the cria.
Woh! this site can be very useful! If you want to buy a pair of shoes to someone for a gift, search this site first. If he is listed there, the shoe size is available. The surprise will be priceless!
Read carefully... those are sponsored results. The first real result IS Linux.org. They're not that biased (search wise). Also, they could buy ads on google and do something similar (but less confusing:))
Unless they force to the users (and companies) DRM and (power-wise) secure computers. With these, they could ensure that you couldn't run any bad software. Now, you would be fucked!
What you don't seem to get is that they both, superficially, aim for the same goal, which is achieving the same level that Windows already have.
You don't believe me? They both implemented a file manager with a web browser integrated. Is it really useful? They both created a clone of Microsoft's COM/OLE. They both created a Document/View framework (okay, for their office "products"). Gnome created a clone of the Registry. They are also creating a.NET implementation.
Were have they innovated? Where are they better than Windows? KDE can put the menu on the top of the screen?? It supports alpha transparency?
My point is there. I understand that they are both different. I have never used KDE longer than 2 days in a row but I have used Gnome for a few months so I really remarked a difference. But fondamentally, they aim for the same thing, and I think it is a wrong goat. It is good to favorise the transition of users conditionned to a Windows world. But have they realised that maybe, it is not the best concept for a good UI?
With all the human resources that the free software community can have, we can do better. Way better.
Stop copying the design of other successful software. Create, innovate. That will really give reasons to use Linux. Presently, linux just have an "alternative to Windows" label.
Woh.. not too fast. I never said to merge the two... I just say that two of the same thing is too much. Maybe one is simpler than the other, but the other way, both are Windows clones. One is enough and should be well done.
The free software community has the power to innovate, why create two project to clone one flawed design?
Yup, very true! But I can't help it, I think that the competition between KDE and Gnome is bad. They offer, superficially, the same thing.
Gnome was born from a ideologic problem with KDE and, from what I see, continues to live for similar reasons. IMO, this is too many efforts in the wrong direction.
At least, if one of the two was trying to be different... or even innovative?
(This isn't intended as a troll... just something that made me feel pretty bad about Linux. I once dropped Linux because of ambitions of the linux community on the desktop, which I thought (and still think) was wrong).
But the fact that KDE and Gnome are going to be there isn't something silly? It will prove the tendancy of the linux community to fragment, which isn't a good thing.
The linux kernel uses the C language on purpose: A kernel is a low-level software, something that the C is good at. But the GIMP isn't what I call a low level software nor a small utility.
I'm not saying that you should use python (although I like python) to create every software. But choosing C++ or C for every project for the sake of its popularity is quite a weak reason. Are they the best languages? No. They are only good at some tasks. This is why there is a diversity in the programming languages kingdom: most languages are good at some task(s) and bad a others. You can choose the one that fits the most to your project or your team.
And for the newbies, they are influenced by the popularity of those languages. I've talked with a few ones that didn't wanted to learn anything else than C++ because everyone was using it. I clearly suspect that a good bunch of C++ users are like this, and have a very low programming culture.
Gimp has been made in C and it is a large project. Gimp is popular and quite good. Does it mean that the C programming language is good for large and complicated projects?
Don't forget that C and C++ are dangerous languages that are prone to hard to find errors and dangerous errors. C and C++ are picked by newbies because it is popular.
It is obviously an attempt to attract the younger generation. 'X' is a cool letter: just think X-Men, LXG, etc. It is a symbol that means "hi-tech", the future.
Same thing for MacOS X.
In written form, the dialects don't differ that much. There is no need to have a French Canadian and a (European) French version of the same software.
For example, Microsoft Windows is localized for France.
I'll shoot anybody who come 100 meters close to my machine*.
Now, that's security!

And from the linked page, a gem that we shouldn't overlook:
"if you don't have Firefox (you should get it!)"
Even the news on the tv talked about it before /.
But Vivisimo, as great as it is, isn't a search engine. It is a meta-search engine. In other words, it searches search engines.
Same thing for Dogpile, MetaCrawler and Kartoo.

Millions of lines on sixty pages? How silly.
Not really. They are masters at playing with fonts. They really can do miracles!
RBC are the worst fucking bank in Canada. They have prohibitive fees, flood their customers with ads and now, I see that they invested in SCO.

There is one major problem: you're locking out Opera users out of Slashdot. They're volontarily avoiding the use of XSLT.

Catch SARS
So evil!
Have you seen all the empty paragraphes at the end of the pages?
Have they used their NVu? :)

All of this is so stereotypical...
VIM, C++, Coffee!?
It don't show what is good on linux, it just show what the wannabies think is good. Come on... C++!
Yeah, but there are plenty of descriptive names, like xcalc / gcalc, proftpd, wuimapd, links, etc.
