The same reason a church actually needs money from its constituents to pay the bills. I have yet to see someone praying for money and getting it. Preaching for money is another matter.
If your employer lets you spend half you time chatting around the water cooler and schedule you for a full day of meetings a week, start looking for another job cause the business cannot make a profit in any legitimate way.
There are collectives such as the renocollective.com that offers very affordable workspace to freelancers and start-ups. This way you can be self-employed, not working from your home and meet other creative people during the day. You can pay by the day if you plan to work few days a week. I think this can be the next best thing for you if you cannot land a job. Look around your area. Best luck to you.
I burned myself after working like hell for 15 years. After my first breakdown, I decided to move to country where it cost me much less money to live, and access to nature really help. I took some online classes and now im looking for venture capital to fund my patent and startup. I hope I can be successful enough to not HAVE to work unless I feel like it...
This is my experience with deep depression... I hope it will help.
It was not a critic of your review, well written and all, I was simply looking forward for other opinions. And yes, I own a small netbook with Internet Access but that's it. Not TV, no big stereo systems, and I do volunteer work at soup kitchens and donate largely to various charities. The big questions are of some interest to me, however I am more interested in fundamental scientific research about what we know about the universe. This book seems to be metaphysical at best, and of no help to me.
This does not mean other people can be interested in the topics covered, but I would probably not have a beer with them since we probably don't share much interests. The best thing about our world, is our freedom to form opinions and I highly cherish the variety. Otherwise the world would be so boring, humanity would have stagnate a long, long ago;-)
Did anyone read the book yet? It seems to me to be a huge exercise in intellectual masturbation... As much as I can enjoy philosophy, I am more interested in what I can do to make our world a little bit better. I for one will not finance the lifestyle of the author. Too many people are still hungry around the world to invest in this. And the answer is 42, every geek knows that!
I went from techno-literate urbanite, to a country living human who is enclined technologically, raising his own food. The deep core of Steve Jobs was a little bit how I became, but he ventured away from the true path of nature living! And yes, I live my life with technology, only I have some real good nice time to think about my solutions while feeding animals...
For the record, I used to admire the guy and even dreamed to work with him. His decisions and general attitude in the last years of his life made him look (in my light) worse than the "evil ibm" he was fighting against in early 80's. The single fact he once stated he would sue the hell out of android with every penny of his personal fortune really helped me put things in perspective, and I pretty much hate him right now... one have to realize the "illusion of grandeur" he was suffering from... and he died from it too by exclusively using alternative medicine to treat a cancer. That says a lot to me, and I think he got what he deserved... Something called Karma maybe?
Not only is he a fuckin' marketer focused on spending his billions hurting others for his own fun, some nuts claimed he reincarnated! The guy is not even a technologist for *hrist sake! Who is he now so I can start hating him 2 minutes every morning again?
I agree, a well stocked savings account enables much more flexibility in negotiations than an ego. In the long run, in non family-focused businesses, can get you farther with some patience.
While not being a dramaqueen like a diva would be, I was sacked in my last position, only to file for my patent application couple months later and on my way to financial freedom as we speak... sometime a diva may be just bad perception from clueless/fearsome management who dont believe there is an outside the box existing, all the while promoting "innovation" as corporate value while driving it away by pointy haired boss'edness (french guy here, please correct me if im wrong).
By my experience, everyone wants an obedient corporate boy who behave exactly like everyone else, but also wants him/her to be innovative... complete opposite and incompatible requirements.
As an uber-geek who loves nature, I learned to related to my techno-literate fellows on the web, with my friends I go fishing, prepare big games animals to eat, make a fire fro time to time... at work I try to spread knowledge to the extent others are willing to suck it (not much). Country living for the nerds!
Mineral oil can be neutral... especially when compared with water : look for universal solvent. Evaporation would not be a problem in a sealed system.
The technique has been field tested in submarines for quite a long time.

+1 insightful, no mod points left.

Also, I would like to see those cars drive in harsh winter conditions, on a mix of snow and ice...
Sci-fi reference + 12 beers do not equal rational thinking (me). But if you don't know the book, read it and think about Apple again...
What is easier :
Diego, welcome to the brave new world.
Yeah, its drinking night for me too tonight. I guess it shows...

Since ai-class.com, no one have an excuse to NOT include AI principles where applicable in their projects.
I can relate, been here and lived it all for one complete year... very tough position and I feel you did the same, for that you earned my respect.
