  1. Pop-Ups on Andreessen on the Browser Wars · · Score: -1, Troll

The only broswer I have found that can mitigate the drugerous and tasteless pop-up crap is Opera. Almost all the pop-up adds under-pop and can be killed with a simple shift-rightclick. As internet advertizing becomes more and more annoying, the browser that people will turn to will be one that block these invasions.
The combination of a web filter or proxy, integrated into the browser itself would be nice.

  2. Finally... on Harry Potter, Macrovision and Economics · · Score: 0

This has been a long time coming. I have over 400VHS movies and can be considered a bit of a videophile. The thing that has irked me for years is the stiffling use of copy-protected VHS movies by these media companies.

When I buy a VHS movie I should be able to recopy it as many times as I want, as long as I use it for my own use. One of my favorite movies, Ishtar, which I watch almost once a week, I have been forced to buy 13 times!! VHS degrades serverly after 50,000 views. If I had been able to copy my own tapes, then I would never of had to waste all that precious money buying the same tape over and over.

This is once again an example of how copy-protection, in anyform, degrades the rights of the paying user; and is simply, as my case proves ,a coniving example of how current corporations are allowed to run away with the cheque book of the end users.

  3. Don't forget UNIX... on Linux at Industrial Light and Magic · · Score: 0

While the power of LINUX is well known as a power-full OS, adequate for most jobs. There are some jobs that require the flair and power of UNIX to do the job right.
I must cite the extensive use of SUN Systems used in many other movies, like Jurrasic Park and Terminator 2, and wonder what would prompt ILM to pick LINUX above an obviously proven set of tools?

  4. Once again... on Laser Powered Paper Plane Takes Flight · · Score: 0

...Japan is leading the technology curve, advancing beyond tried and tested methods of "American know how" and "ingenuity". While these "homespun" methods might of worked to put a man on the moon, obviously the time has come for a change. How can we sit idly by and allow Japan, a country that launched a sneak attack upon Pearl Harbour in 1941, gather a monopoly upon self propelled paper air plane technology?

The answer of course is "we dare not", the consequences of doing otherwise are so grim, they need not even be considered. Much like the scare that the Russian's sent through the American science community in 1957 with Sputnik, this simple warning must be heeded with great interest. How long before these Japanese perfect long rang self propelled paper airplanes, capable of poking out an unprotected eye?

I call upon all /.'s to inform their Senator's, and Congressmen and women, to put the War on Terror on the back burner. This "folded paper menace" from the Far East cannot go unchecked for very long, time has already begun to run out!!!

  5. I wouldn't mind... on Hong Kong's Octopus · · Score: 0

If a system like this was in place in the United States, I think the WTC attacks would of been more easily preventable. These "smart card" systems that tracks purchases could be easily integrated into FBI or CIA systems, which would trip alarm bells when certain people buy certain products related to terrorism.
It would sure make me feel better when I take the elevator 50 floors up to work everyday.

  6. Re:Why not Distributed Checkers! on Distributed Chess Computing Project · · Score: 0

"Checkers _is_ better than chess" That statement is absurd. Chess is to Checkers and Checkers is to Four-In-A-Row.

While this may be true, Tetris is better than both of them combined. Tetris takes brain power AND hand eye co-ordination. It's not hard to physically castle in Chess or crown your player in Checkers. Setting up a 4x line in Tetris AND being able to navigate the long peice into place on lvel 17 takes more skill than any Kasparov's of the world could conjure up.

  7. I'll keep my Ford Expedition thanks... on SDSU Students Create Sporty Hybrid Vehicle · · Score: 0

Safety is my number one consern, followed closely by my pride in buying a quality American product. This hybrid car looks like a total tin can. The odds are that I will suvive an accident in my Expedition, and not this hyrbid; or even some flimsy european attempt at "safety".

While Mercades and Volvo do offer very safe cars, pure gross tonnage is the ultimate factor in my decision to chose the largest vehicle that Ford offers. All the German engineering in the world can't compete with American know how and brute force.

Furthermore, I don't see the problem with my SUV getting decent mileage at 14 MPG. If the extra money spent on gas buys me the comfort in knowing that me and my dog will be safe in an accident, then I will gladly fill up my tank every two days until there is an equally safe hybrid alternative.

To deny me this right is to infringe upon my rights as an American to protect my family in the best manner possible. To argue against this, as many people do, is silly, as it ignores the tenets upon which America was founded over 200 years ago.

  9. Re:"Blogs" are not journalism on Blogging for Dummies? · · Score: 1

K5 is like a High School newspaper for grown-ups. Anyone can work on the product allowing severe adequacy to creep in. The fact that articles are voted on is the real problem. Democracy is always seen as the way to go for everything, which is wrong. No corporations are democracies, and yet they work very well to produce a good product. If every moron at Microsoft had a say in how Windows 95 was programmed it would of sucked. Inovation does not come from voting, voting brings about an adequate solution. Why would we want adequate journalism, in blogs and K5, when we can have an editor approve or disprove of an article based upon experience and skill?

Let's say we have the worlds greatest editor and speller, and he/she is an editor for a magazine. As long as the writers are good, its safe to assume the product will be good too. If this is suddenly changed to the K5/Blog model, the godlike skill of this editor is totally abbrogated by the flood of votes from the mess of people in the office, from the janitor down to the network admin.
Obviously this model will produce a sub-par effort compared to the former, totalitarian model.

  10. This is odd... on D-VHS to Hit The Market This Week · · Score: 1

DVD seems to be "good enough" for watching videos at home; I really don't see the need for yet another format. The only problems I can see with the DVD rental business is that DVDs are much more fragile than VHS tapes. I've rented brand new DVDs that were already skipping. I wonder what the life of a DVD vs. a VHS/D-VHS tape is? I know video store VHS tapes are expensive for the stores to buy, like $70 or something crazy. If DVDs are the same price, (to pay for licensing I assume), then it will be more expensive for video stores to rent out DVDs than D-VHS/VHS.
Otherwise this makes no sense to go out and buy a D-VHS, people just bought DVD machines en-masse.
