I have to add that I do not support 'Piracy' and I havent seen any movies on my computer except through Real Media. I have never watched a DVD but want to buy a DVD Player for my computer one day (its cheaper this way).
If this tool (DeCCS) is necessary to enable watching DVDs on my computer and it is illegal then I will miss out on watching DVDs. My computer is my entertainment medium. I do not watch analog TV and can not afford Digital TV right now.
If the intention of DeCCS was realy to pirate DVDs then I can only hope the Entertainment Industry will be compatible with my computers (AFAIK it isnt ATM). I run 3 Linux machines and 2 Windows machines. The Windows machines will be running Linux very soon (it will take a while to transition my mum to Linux but it will be done for performance and stability reasons).
NB. I dont use PTP myself but I support the use of the Internet to distribute Music - its just easier - and I mean distribute the way the article describes.
Oh, is that right? I can run Microsoft Office then, can I?... Also, easier than Windows to install, my ass. Wake up and smell the coffee.
You seem to be very active on a thread you know very little about.
I was surprised myself when I loaded up wine (apt-get install wine && winesetup) then ran IE/PSP/Warcraft (wine EXPLORER.EXE).
Try it one day.
Office supposedly works although I cannot afford to tell you about it. Theres no point in Visual Studio when you have EMACS/KDevelop/Glade/Anjuta/David and many other IDEs to choose from which all compile ELF executables (you get better speed with GNU Code). Office Applications? How about Star Office/Open Office/Abiword. Then theres the ubiquitous Mozilla for your Web Browser *and many more of course*, Sylpheed/Balsa etc for your mail clients the list goes on and on and its all Free Software.
Consider that an ISP can easilly block/cap a port rendering PTP Services almost useless. How much persuasion would a consumer need to download from the main music site described in the article.
Make that sites - actually make that a service (a service would allow independant developers to write their own implementation of the client). ISPs would of course allow this traffic at full speed. Now we have a plan that is feasable. =)
I think the Patent system isnt very good ATM and I know in the future technology will be at the hands of most (if not everyone). I think we should have a Voting Device in the hands of everyone and they could vote which Patents should be granted.
Would my Voting Device be Patentable and if so do you honestly think I should be granted a monopoly on a device which everyone may need/want. If the answer is a no then why?
NB. I just made that device up as an example - I wouldnt pursue something as trivial. =)
It is very disappointing that you are a researcher of new technology and are scared to continue with your work because of a general Patent. You cannot be the only person who is scared about being sued in response to fulfilling a dream.
What do you think about the OpenPatents.org Project ?
I posted a response to 'Open Patents' in their discussion forum and gave the Open Source Community a n example of the type of idea I would like to see fulfilled and what I think about Patents.
http://www.openpatents.org/discussions/archives/ op l-discuss.0103/msg00000.html
Ideas shouldnt be exploited to make someone a millionaire and Patents are bad in general IMHO.
Doh I hit the wrong button and posted this half-assed.
read: "say it was running an ext3 so you could have journalling and ext3 was only a module OR the filesystem was corrupt" in place of whats between the braces email me if you really want to know or find me at irc.undernet.org #linuxhelp.;P
Can anyone explain the advantage of Linux having all the different stupid partitions?
There are a few reasons, its good to keep/home on a seperate partition for when you do need to reinstall the system or change to another distribution. Another reason would be, you boot the system in different ways, ie youd have root mounted first and the/usr next (I am not sure exactly about the way it boots) and if you couldnt boot/usr one day (say it was running an ext3 so you could have journalling) then you could still boot the system and fix things. The second point is the main reason why it does this but I only use a seperate/usr,/home and swap of course. If you want to learn more there are plenty of documents at http://www.tldp.org to help you (from boot to bash howto comes to mind). =)
I am not really waiting to see any 'Future Crew Demos', dont assume things. I want the next DemoDVD which will have C=64 Demos/Intros on it. PC Demos and Amiga Demos do not excite me but the C=64 rocked and demos show off the best parts of the computer!
Do you really have to be SO picky about accuracy of the post? It doesnt take a genius to work out how fast it is in real life. At least fix the error by saying its about twice the speed a normal person walks at.

Go get him for what?
The original intention of the DeCCS code was to enable the playback of DVD in Linux AFAIK.
If that is illegal then good luck to Jon Johansen.
Some ISPs already do this. *hint* =)

I remember my first time.
We all do. *wink*
Commodores hit the shelves.
Amstrad sales bloom.
8-bit returns.
Torvald.
Wasnt he the guy from Swordfish?

*POP* =)
How lame does that sound. "Penguins are flying" or "Penguins are taking over the world" would be more interesting.
Nice article though.
Only problem is that P2P networks are still up.

I dont know if you can apply for free but there is OpenPatents.org which supports Patenting ideas which 'want to be Free'.

Good question. =)
OK the link is broken...
Just remove the space in the URI. =)

Are you OK?
I was thinking the same thing when I seen this post. ;)

You could have previewed your post before clicking submit. DemoDVD will be pretty cool when released.
*takes the bait*
No, football is a mans sport, I am more than a man.
YEAH!
;)
Playboy pinball could be taken to new heights of adventure. Ill leave it up to your imagination to decide what I am picturing.
*starts whistling Pinball Wizard*
That may be true and I think the best pinball games ever were Terminator 2 and The Adams Family!
If I was to save a 'Pinny' (.au slang maybe) I would certainly choose one of those two. =)

If you want to be a critic do it constructively.
