    According to the BBC article, the initial charges were dropped due to a technicality (i.e. indictiment was filed too late, whatever that means).

    So chances are he knew that he was being watched and slipped up.

    It's interesting that 72,000 boxes were used for one package. Doesn't mean that the machines under his control were "just" those. If someone wants to generate a certain amount volume (e.g. traffic for a DoS, SPAM, etc) probably 72k machines will suffice.

    This is nothing was the Russian-based botnets offer especially for generating SPAM selling cheaps meds.

    Not at the same level as HP, at least here in the Toronto area. They are certainly going the "value add" route when you purchase their servers or their SAN solutions. We used them with our Exchange 2010 migration and it was pretty much free. I guess the plan is to prove their worth and build some momentum. The consulting market is pretty saturated and some of the MS/IBM/Oracle preferred partners leave a lot to be desired.

    The difference with Dell is that they have the capital to buy their place in the services field compared to other places starting out.

    Dell and HP had to re-invent themselves as "Services" companies. That's where IBM makes their money (well, that and their crazy licensing fees for their software).

    I have a feeling even their server sales eclipse what they get in the desktop scene where the margins are a lot smaller.

    When I'm making on my contract work or just on a personal project (and not just IT-related), I can easily spend 12 hours.

    Working in my full-time job as an employee for 12-16 hours? No way, you'd get 4 good hours out of me, and the rest I may just idle away.

    As a former manager, I would not do it myself, so I wouldn't ask anyone else either.

    Work at a safe speed!!!! Mistakes can be a lot more costly than a missed deadline or disappointed exec.

    I just read a bunch of the posts in the Kindle forum which is populated by the indie authors. The overwhelming majority there is fine with the lending and feel bad for Dale. The vocal few always get things their way ...

    What's weird is that I don't understand how he was going to monetize this? Ads? Priority lending status for paying members?

    He can solve his problem by going to another host and start again. I'm sure he has a backup somewhere. Just host it outside the US to be safe.

    It's clear that the FBI acting on behalf of the MPAA/RIAA had an overzealous NZ police force keen to impress.

    The really interesting item for me was how UMG submitted an invalid takedown notice on a video on Youtube on baseless grounds. I'm surprised that some of the artists didn 't sue the record company.

    This is nonsense. I have used both Androids and Touchpads, and the Touchpad is far easier to learn and use. HP did many, many things right. And they were NOT first to market a tablet. Many, many people tried to make a successful tablet before the Touchpad. I have a drawer full of their failures.

    Oh, and before anyone calls me an HP fanboi, let me assure you that while I have respect for their products, I hate HP as a company. But I am forced to use their products because I'm married to HP fangoil.

    Very very common in all healthcare projects here in Canada. A great way to put the brakes on a few initiatives or scare doctors into submission.

    It certainly is employing a lot of hacks. I've worked with a couple of great Privacy Officers, but also a couple of dozen who don't have a clue. Lots of money to make in that field. Especially in Ontario.
