Call me Ignorant if you like, but I am guessing that it KICKS THE ASS of free software alternatives, not least due to certain PATENTED processes that it uses.
But why market to developers ? Far better to spend the budget schmoozing the suits, who are after all, the ones who will be signing off any purchase orders.
Let's face it, developers are there to use whatever toolset management wants them to, and to shut up whinging. If they don't like it, they can go work elsewhere.
Whilst any source code given to the community can only be a good thing, surely one of the key issues of an OS is that it be "language agnostic" at the very least. Also, I cannot see why anyone would waste so much effort "re-inventing the wheel". We already have a perfectly good free OS in Linux, do we really want this fragmentation ?
People have been saying IT is not paying its way for years. Its just a tactic to make IT people feel less powerful. In many many industries, without IT you are out of business. It really is as simple as that.
Pay no attention to the bean counters. There is a lot of jealousy at the incredibly high salaries some IT workers are bringing home.
That patent was an example of the type of patent that pure software AKA Rational hold on the technologies used by purify. If they have a patent on modifying.o files, then they probably have patents on all kinds of other obvious shit. Try not to take everything so literally.
And I am not a Lawyer (I am a paralegal in the patent area) but don't Rational Software have various patents on the purify technology ? I would be surprised if this valgrind thing doesn't infringe upon at least one of them. Like for example United States Patent 5535329 July 9, 1996 "Method and apparatus for modifying relocatable object code files and monitoring programs "
But doesn't driving an electric / hybrid vehicle take all the fun out of driving ? Wouldn't you be much better off with a high performance European sports sedan such as this one?
You could feel just as smug in one of those as you do in an electric car, just for different reasons, and you could still burn people off at the lights !!!
But you have a working system, at a reasonable price, why the hell would you want to re-invent that particular wheel ?

A disclaimer cannot change the law. Slashdot may like to think they are not responsible for their content, however a court of law might well disagree with them. They have removed stuff in the past (scientology stuff) and they will remove stuff in the future.

No, most likely adequacy will sue slashdot, based on the 'follow the money' principle of legal action.

But if Perl 6 is not backward compatible with perl 5, it should not really be called perl, should it ? And while we are on the subject, if Perl6 has all these features that python and tcl have had for years, why did Larry think it worth duplicating all that effort ? Why did he not simply e-mail Guido van Rossum and ask if he could contribute ?
It seems to me like egos are getting in the way of efficiency here. After all, why re-invent the wheel when we already have python ? Why break all those working perl scripts ?
Ego is the enemy of open source, and here we see why.
But wouldn't the perfect keyboard layout change dependant on what one was actually typing ? E.g. some languages make more frequent use of certain letters compared to others.
I can imagine Lisp programmers would want the parentheses '(' and ')' keys to be in a more accessible place than above the 9 and 0 characters.
What do other think - Should keyboards be dynamically reconfigurable dependant on the programming language in use ?
Overclocking your PC without any knowledge of Electronics amounts to setting fire to your house on purpose. Face it, most of the overclocking brigade don't know shit about electronics. Or basic economics for that matter.
How many more children have to die, before the message gets through ?
The UL Mark on a product means that UL has tested and evaluated representative samples of that product and determined that they meet UL's requirements. In addition, products are periodically checked by UL at the manufacturing facility to make sure they continue to meet UL requirements.
From their website. I think this is what we need to avoid our power supplies gonig up in smoke.
But I thought all PCs were certified by Underwriter's Laborotories to make sure they wont go up in smoke.
Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not) but I think the Insurance company would be well within its rights to withhold payment if your house burned down as a result of your Linux Zealot teenagers overclocking habit:-)
Microsoft software is not so expensive per byte to purchase (with Windows costing around $150) but think of the cost to you of supporting it, and the cost/byte goes skyrocketing...
But what is the point of merging all these distros ? Surely the point of each distro is that it caters to a specific niche. Redhat for e-commerce, OpenLinux for the deasktop, Gentoo for the propellerheads, SuSE for the Europeans, etc etc.
Surely by combining all these distros together we risk one player having too much control over Linux, and then we might as well all use Microsoft products:-(:-(
I doubt it. VMWare has been available for years, so if anyone wanted to do this, they would simply have bought a vmware license.

BULLSHIT. (Pardon my French). You are simply talking crap straight out of you ass, moron. I cannot be bothered to rebut you.

The last thing I want to hear whilst drinking coffee is limp-slipknot or linkin-biscuit or any of that nu-metal bullshit.
For sure. If you are SERIOUS about software development ClearCase is absolutely the only way to go.
The M3 has "Launch Control". Unless you are a qualified race driver, most humans cannot compete with that sort of technology.
That depends. Will there be any corners in the track ;-)

Then surely what this guy did contravenes the DMCA ? Mind you, nearly everything anyone does seems to contravene the DMCA these days!
