  1. Re:The truth of the accusation... on How Wiretaps Actually Work (washingtonpost.com) · · Score: 2, Insightful

WAPO is a deceitful rag, the Fox News of the left. If I see a WAPO article, I take it with a pillar of salt. No objectiveness and the comment section looks like it is WAPO employees posting, "Ya, what he said!" and "But Russia!".

  2. Re:Nintendo not innovating? on Nintendo Running Itself into the Ground? · · Score: 1

With Super Mario 64, Nintendo didn't invent the "go from the main world...collect something shiny". They invented the "3D platformer" itself. Almost every modern 3D game in existence has something in it that was originally done in Super Mario 64.

  3. Re:OT: an obvious rant on word choice. on Toyota Patents Winking, Laughing, Crying Car · · Score: 1

Words often undergo a meaning shift, don't blame it on the person that uses the word, instead blame it on the society that shifted the meaning. The word "gay" just so happened to be a word that has shifted meaning a few times.

"Gay" used to be a synonym for "happy" or "fun". The Flintstones invited everyone to "...have a gay ol' time." Everybody knew what that meant at the time.

Then "gay" shifted, homosexuals or fruity folks started being referred to as "gay". People got pissed, some didn't care, oh well. You can stand in front of a steamroller, jump up and down, scream curses at it and give it dirty looks all you want but that won't stop it from rolling right over you.

Now, the meaning of "gay" has shifted again. Sure, "gay" kept its previous meanings but "gay" can now also be used to describe something that is undesirable because of its ridiculousness or something that "sucks" or is "stupid". Once again, getting mad and calling names is not going to stop it. What's done is done, live with it. It's not going away.

BTW, as far as I know, the word "gay" does not in any way communicate "evil", that is your inclusion and perhaps your opinion.

I feel that the only mistake the original poster made was to apologize for his use of the word "gay" before he used it, conveying the sense that he himself was not entirely comfortable with its use. The sharks smelled blood and attacked...

  4. My 49g+ came yesterday (what I think) on HP Launches New Calculators · · Score: 1

I preordered (yeah preordered) a 49g+ a couple months ago and I finally got my mitts on it yesterday. I also own a 49g a TI89 and a TI83+. I used the TI83+ for quickie things (rrefing a matrix, physics, graphing regular functions and whatnot) and used the 49g for everything else. Although I loved the 49g for its features, its one sticky area was the it was kinda slow. The 49g was very handy for checking answers thoughout the calculus series. I never liked the TI89. Ive only used it a few times and probably will never use it again. The TI83+ ws nice because it is simple and fast. I had the chance to do some linear algebra calculations on my new 49g+ last night it is noticably faster than the 49g. The screen bigger and easier to read than the 49g's. The buttons are easier to press and it beeps when you do something wrong (nice). Havet had a chance to really check out any of the algebra/calculus stuff yet but from what Ive seen so far, HP has made a damn fine calc. Now go get yourself one!

The blurb about our schools teaching math concepts late is all too true. I work in the math and engineering dept at a community college and you would be shocked how many people dont know how to add negative numbers, work with fractions/decimals or even divide. It is alarming and we as a country need to do something about it immediately.

  6. Re:our morality on Artificial Inteligence Common Sense Database · · Score: 1

This is an excelent point and it really got me thinking. AI is one of my favorite things to think about. The short answer to your query is that the morality of the society that the AI will be communicating with must be "imposed" on that AI. Otherwise most members of the society will choose not to utilize the AI in question because either it will be spouting irrelevant (to the user anyways) information or it may be percieved as rude or even obscene. This "morality" is extremely important especially in these early stages of human/artificial intelligence communications because most people in the world still harbour a deep distrust of machines...
