I don't think that the heat really makes a different if the drives are constructed well... the old, old 2gb SCSI disks in my server have been running 24/7 pretty much since i bought them quite a few years ago,, i think around 7 years ago to be exact,, they were really really expensive,, but they still work,, and they run extremely hot! if i wanted to,, i could literally cook eggs on them..
i'm not talking about fridge magnets,, i'm talking about large industrial type magnets:) combine this with, well, pretty much any of the others and you have a fool proff solution,, i never thought of the folding part,, that's a really good idea:)
I would write my own device drivers if I owned a device that wasn't already supported by Linux.
hmm, maybe you just need to start creating your own devices too,,, i don't really see why creating a simple ISA card and drivers should be too hard...
"It's some sort of funky medium-level format..."
So... would this mean there's no real way to do a secure wipe of files on modern drives? Pardon me if I sound ignorant on this subject, because I am frankly...
of course there is,, many ways... magnets, shredders etc.:D
I have a CD player with digital output,, i see no reason that i can't play them in it, and use a computer with digtial input to make MP3s, copyprotecting their CD's, if you can call them that after they've been copy protected... will only enfuriate customers more, resulting in most likely fewer sales... personally, i can't tell the differnce when i play the CD in my discman then just record through my line in... as long as you use short, and quality cables,, I think there are few cases where you could...
I suppose that something of the sort could work,, but IBM drives are already finicky at times... i could see it getting out of calbration, and it acccidentally overwriting the wrong data etc.. maybe i'm just afraid of change tho too... only time will tell...
in my experience, the bigger and faster the drives are getting, the bigger the errors, and the faster they happen,, i have a RAID of 3 IBM 2gb SCSC drives, they run hot enough to cook eggs on (i've tried it... don't ask) and they've been running 24/6 pretty much since i've got them... i had a newer IBM drive for my desktop a couple years ago.. it's already dead, and the old 2gb ones are still heating my room,,,
I agree,, since i can probably no longer play these cds in my computer,, or make backups of them, i'll have to begin downloading MP3's,, which are much easier to do both of the above with,,, sorry BMG,, no sympathy from me,,, you've pretty much dug your own grove this time...
It really depends how well they're made,, and how well they're stored,, most of my Atari 800 discs still work perfectly,, they're at LEAST 10 years old now,, and i was just using them in it the other day,, the drive died before they did... thankfully i had another compatible one around.
Chances are that someone with the nickname "the human `swiss army knife`" probably wouldn't get that far anways, lol :)
Reece,

Reece,
Maybe they're legally bound to keep the files for x years... just no one said that they'd ever have to be able to print it off...

Well, I would you see, except that i've never used AOL in my life,,, as I doubt anyone with even a vocab exsiting ONLY of "LOL" would...

How would the speed throtling work?? it sounds like it could be a Major cause of problems to me....

Reece,
wait, bilingual?? whoa dude! add some languages on top of it's voice recognition,, and it'd be like a mini interpreter!! that'd be sweet!
Reece,
Hey, that's all it needs :), a touque would really top it off tho,, lol :), that or have it bilingual,
Reece,
At some point, the argument will begin as to whether they are 'alive' or not, and robot rights groups will spring up everywhere! Whee!
:)
You mean all our base will belong to them??? lol
Reece,
Petproof?? not likely, but with one of them,, who needs a pet?? lol :)
Reece,
The american ones would most likely contain algorhythms on how to use shot guns, then would malfunction, and kill us all in our sleep...

Reece,
The DSL companies in my area all allow you to use upto 4 IP's,, it's only the evil cable companies that limit you to one,, ar charge extra for them...
