This ia actually quite odd, I just got back from lunch with a person who works at Microsoft Canada, who coincidently used to work in McDonalds HO in Canada (Don Mills/Eglinton area on Toronto).
He said over conversation that McD's uses about 27 backend Microsoft 2000 servers (up to last year)for various tasks incl. data collection from the corporate stores and franchisees, as well as food order processing, intranet, email, etc. He said they don't have a *nix box to speak of.
And I can testify that after working at 4 different McD's in Canada as Management that the systems DO NOT use SCO linux. They use a DOS 6.22 network (those touch screen Siroc 3 POS systems) connected to a Windows box in the management office - all data is trandsferred to HO via dialup on demand. The older POS systems (Siroc 1's and 2's) were an ancient network (ArcNet maybe?), which in turn connected to a DOS box in the back room, which connected via dial-up on demand to HO.
So they may be talking about the States, but for sure, NOT the rest of the world.
Well speaking as a Canadian, You can lick my balls, proverbially of course... I must apologize for that remark, since of course it is the Canadian way.;)
And FYI some of the best things to come out of Canada, in no particular order are:
-Mike Meyers
-Jim Carrey

-Hockey (Hockey History)
-Dr. Frederick Banting (discoverer of insulin)
-The CanadaArm (which you guys have used in your shuttles for ages now)

I heard of the virus yesterday morning after one user reported a funny.exe in his email.
I checked sarc.com (symantec) and by 11AM they already had defs online to detect beagle.a (from the 18th).
Anyhow Symantec Corporate detects it. Pushed it at 11am to find out four (yes, 4) out of 80 had actually ran the fricken attachment and were infected. Users. Uggh.
I really, really don't think it is a joke though... check out the root of objective.jesussaves.us pretty "scary" stuff, not that I have anything against those with faith...
I just think these people take it too far, as the muslim faith has their share of extremists (we all know that lesson a little too well), so does the christian faith, as does probably every other faith in the world. Some people can take iconism and language a little too far and use them to bastardize anything that really meant nothing in the first place.
uhhhhh, no. My sarcasm and/or flame detector is wonky right now, so I am not sure exactly which way you are trying to poke at me...
However to rebut, I do find The Onion funny - satire, simply stated as satire - no claims otherwise. That other website (jesussaves.us) makes no claims to be satire - which is what makes it scary. That page written by "Professor" Dr. Richard Paley is nothing but a disguise for fear... seriously he even picks apart Apple's ancient ads and groups everyone in Open Source as Communist... Puh-lease...
Did you actually RTFW - or are you just trying to start some kind of a verbal war?
That site is by far one of thoe most scary, right wing, religeous, propogandist spewing sites I've seen in a long, long, long time.... It's scary that people like that guy actually spread that kind or crap around - he's a professor!
It's one thing to be religeous, but to have your head in the sand and that afraid of everything - come on!
Dude, I am a geek... trust me on that... school grades, "habits", lifestyle, etc.
The leash factor I think is not so much if you are a geek or not, maybe it's more of a socio-political mindset. I am the master of my and others technology - it quivers before me. I've been branded as the firm "geek" (we had a discussion as to whether I was actually a nerd, or a geek). Maybe it's also that I grew up in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere, literally, the middle of nowhere. I used to spend my afterhours in the highschool computer room programming assembly and C on the Unisys Icon II's because I hated everything else around me - or in the elctronics lab wiring up/ripping apart new and fun gadgets to play with.
Now, I live in the city - AND HATE IT! Maybe it's cause you've lived in the city all your life that you just don't see it, no, that's likely exactly what it is. You don't understand what it was like to live 18 years as a geek in the country and then move to a big metropolis.
It's one thing to embrace and master technology, it's another to be under it's control (primarily from external forces keeping you on the proverbial "leash")... It's a fine, fine line - And I see it - and I hate it. I think it's the "roundedness" of being from where I am from that allows me to see it...
I think the digital camera is one exception that is OK. Some would take a film camera, some would take a digital, that would be their perogative.
My idea of camping *is not* anywhere near where one could use a cellphone, or WiFi or whatever. For reference, see "Algonquin Park" in Northern Ontario, or up near Cochrane for some good back country camping on crown land, or near Bobcaygeon in the Kawartha's - all are good examples of cell free areas.
My take on the situation is this: for people that are immersed in technology at home, at work, on call, etc. like myself... you just need to "disconnect" every once in awhile. I use a cell only when I go for a weekend jaunt... since I am "on call" - however there are *many* times during the year that I inform work that under no circumstances will they be able to get in touch with me for geographical reasons. There is something that just can't be explained by being in some remote wilderness where nobody, and I mean nobody can get in touch with you - and you cannot get in touch with others - even in an emergency. Something rustic about it, makes you respect nature more. It's hard to explain, but it is a sense of elation.
This whole technology thing is good, without it I wouldn't have a job and a paycheque, but for many it's like a leash, an electronic leash - and *that* my friend is the "Tecnology is BAD" part.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes it is kinda ku to whip out the notebook and cell to connect (if of course you can, and *have* to - see the leash part) and have your co-campers just stare at you blankly... That is of course until the beer bottles start flying in one's direction, then "Technology is BAD" once again.:)
dude. nothing can replace beer. but vodka and kool-aid+water does the trick.
However, a good canoe, tent, (yes I know it's bad) propane burner, naptha stove (if you got the room) and a good dual mantle propane lantern does the job.
You DO NOT need marshmallows. For the love of god, get away. Pretend Technology DOES NOT exist. AFAIAC Camping ++ technology != fun.
I don't care, geeks NEED to get away. Screw technology, GET AWAY!!! Pick a good peice of crown land (in Canada) or Algonquin - for those in the states, think about it, wilderness, oh yeah, that IS the ticket. I don't know if the US has the equivalent of "Crown Land" (free land, free camping, free whatever).
I've learnt that "Technology is BAD(c)". Well, maybe not, but you get the idea. I must admit, I do take my cell when I go camping (permitted it is within the network), ONLY to connect via dialup and do shit that my fricken company requires of me whilst I am away.
Camping=="getting away from it all". Anything else sucks balls.
You guys may think it's funny but that IS a good turntable.
My good friend dj's and that was his "dream" purchase last year, they don't exactly change much (how much can you DO with a turntable?). But the direct drive technics is an excellent table for the budding dj - by dj I mean rave, techno that kind of dj'ing - not the cd spinning kind on radio.
And don't get me started on dj'ing with cd's - something isn't quite right about that, the tactile feel of scratching just isn't there - and it nowhere nearly looks as cool.
Yeah, how exactly IS this going to help??? Who modded this person informative?
It will only work if you manually try and goto sitefinder.verigisn.com (www, ping, trace, whatever).
Do you really understand how DNS works? If I make a query to iudsbfkjdf.com, verisign redirects me to their IP using the wildcard 'A' record, in which the webpage at that IP CLAIMS to be www.iudsbfkjdf.com.
Adding that to hosts will only redirect you to (in your stated case - google) if you attempt to connect to sitefinder.verisign.com.
Yes. Mr. Bloomberg was very quick to point fingers, but it was fairly certain within 12 hours - exactly what happened where first, this is just a nail in the coffin.
It's nice to know that people in political power down there seem to think we're the devil or something. Makes me feel special:-)
The media levy is applied to ANY and ALL media that can or could be used for copying music. So if you're buying a data cd for use with your backup software (or whatnot) the levy IS STILL APPLIED. The levy is applied to Flash RAM and hard disks for god sake in portable devices, not just cd's and tapes.
The levy does allow us to copy discs for our own use. I submit that if the labels start to implement anti-copying technology on Cds and whatnot that the levy be lifted (since this is EXACTLY what the levy is there to remedy) and if this is not done, I suggest a citizen's rebellion becuase it's now "double-dipping" and an unfair subisdy when we can't do what the "levy" is there to remedy anyhow. Be it a further stoppage of buying music (which I don't do anyhow now due to the current draconian mesaures and price-fixing - which have even been proven in court) or force our MP's to remove the levy (like Sheilagh "Dumbass" Copps - the Heritage Minister - would remove the levy or be smart enough to force the labels to not include copy protection, I'm sad that I am a Liberal). I suggest removing the Levy because it seems the labels are going to do what they want anyhow.
The major difference between "audio" and "data" blank cd's are the recording surface and (supposedly) greater compatibility with audio devices (which I have *bever* came across a problem with a "data" cd in any audio device yet). They expect to be able to charge you more because of simple marketing and end user ignorance.
I don't mean to be an ass, but I think you are referring to a "leech" that gross little blood sucking thing that I sometimes use for fishing.:-)
His name means to empty or to drain by percolating. ie: a percolator coffee pot leaches coffee grinds.
I don't know what manual you are reading. But the current QSC Management guide (CDN circa, 2001) states:
Bloomfield Satellite and Bloomfield Gourmet 1000 Coffee Brewer
Brew Tempterature: 185-195F (85-91C)
Holding Temperature: 170-180F (76-82C)
Coffee/Water Ratio (Satellite): 8.4oz (238g) (64g) packet to 224 fl oz. (6.62l) water
Coffee/Water Ratio (1000): 2 1/4oz (64g) packet to 60fl oz. (1.77l) water
Now these numbers aren't too far off from what you are stating, but I can only assume mine are more correct. And BTW: I don't ever remember any training manual (crew anyways - management, yes) stating brew temperatures, only basic operation of the machine. Those numbers were only for QSC checking and verification.
I completely agree. It's not like I am the *cleanest* person. Hell, I eat whatever is in the fridge and scrape off the green stuff. I'm also from the country (which, statistically makes me healthier overall than a city kid - and also gives less chance for alergies [http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/09/18/dust020918]) .
I don't have a single anti-bacterial anything in my house. Except the polysporin, that is pretty much mandatory.
My friends as well who are similar in habits, are less sick. Those who are clean-freaks and rely on that stuff seem to get sicker much more often. Be it the common cold. I've been around sick people all winter and have barely caught a snuffle.
Seeing as how everybody is so gung-ho for these products, I think it will eventually go the way of the anti-biotic resistance to bugs we're now seeing [http://www.nature.com/nature/links/020613/020613- 3.html] this world is becoming a scary place.
In other news. Some asshole went to work in Markham, Ontario after becoming infected with SARS [http://www.pulse24.com/News/Top_Story/20030410-00 8/page.asp] - I hope they charge/"fine the hell out of" this fuckup and others like him, assuming he doesn't die. Seriously. That's just stupid.
It is not considered Double Jeopardy, it is only an appeal...
1) You cannot be tried for the *same* crime twice, however, prosecutors can amend or change the crimes in which you are being tried for ie: you are no longer tried for the murder of Joe, just maybe a nice inditement of manslaughter.
2)Double Jeopardy doesn't count on appeal. Normally the losing side can appeal if there was a trial error or they want to fight a ruling the judge made on a point in the trial (including evidence that shouldn't have been, allowing a surprise witness - a procedural error).
3) Unlike the Movie - you CAN'T be tried and convicted for killing someone (for instance) and then actually kill them. Those are actually TWO separate crimes. Makes for a good movie, but the law isn't paid attention to. That's where you just have to sue the state for negligence, or whatever fancy scheme you can get your lawyer to concoct.
Microsoft Lobbies, yes. Cause they got billions of ill-begotten dollars from their original system put in place (buy a pc, you pay us regardless of what OS if any is on it), lest we all not forget that the MS OS was a blatant "ripoff" of the company that licensed them the OS in the first place. They also got their coin from using this dominance in the marketplace, so any attempts to justify their "lobbying" efforts would make even Adam Smith turn in his grave.
As for the donations... Just what is good about seriously outdated computing equiptment being donated to our schools? It's like giving the students a slide rule and telling them they can't use calculators anymore (they *should* be doing it in their head, but thats another topic). The donations would wind up being a tax writeoff at the expense of the taxpayers of America, and would do nothing more than undermine the solid and fairly stable alternative OS base that already exists (be it *nix or Apple).
Seriously, just what good is 95' anymore? Expecially since most new hardware doesn't even come with drivers for that OS anymore, again, just WHERE is the point in donating outdated equiptment if none other than to infiltrate yet another market at the students' and parents' expense.
It's a win-win for MS.
Everything is a win-win for Microsoft. Even protracted court battles turn out to be a win-win for Microsoft as we have recently seen.
Yes definately OT.
Got myself a kitten, now nine weeks old. Taught her how to fetch beer caps. Seems disinterested in fetching other things, and her attention wavers much quicker then my parents dog.
From the look of responses I guess my little kitty's trick isn't as special as I orignally thought!
What about the Orange Book standard for CD's. Are they stamping a "Compact Disc" logo on it? 'cause they sure as hell are compliant if that's the case.
Maybe someone should let Philips know... they might be interested in Sony's misadventures.

What about the Orange Book standard for CD's. Are they stamping a "Compact Disc" logo on it? 'cause they sure as hell are compliant if that's the case. Maybe someone should let Philips know... they might be interested in Sony's misadventures.
