    That's funny, I remember being taught that hydrogen is so light that it will escape from the atmosphere...but I guess that means it can accumulate above the atmosphere? Another poster mentioned it's extreme reactivity, I guess it would react rapidly with ozone.

    in the electronics world goes back at least to Intel's 486SX, and probably much further

    I remember stories back in the 80's of ICL's mainframes that had some of their capacity (cpu? #terminals?) disabled by a simple hardware link. When the customer paid for the upgrade, an engineer would come out and change the link. There must be even earlier examples...

    I plan to get a mid-range chip, then underclock it a few notches as to reduce it's operating temperature and thus extend the reliability of the chip.

    You should just buy the cheaper part and run it at its rated speed. And put a bigger heatsink on it if you like.

    I don't think it's about one brand vs. another - more likely the particular model. The low-end high-density consumer drives are less reliable than the expensive 'server' SCSI models (yes, sometimes they are the same drive with a SCSI interface, but not always).

    Could it be because there is now less that can be done to increase the performance? I mean, I remember when I was always buying some new card or upgrade, but now my PC is fast enough, and I can't see anything worth buying (try as I might!)
