you're largely talking about programs that aren't programmed to be cross-platform then. the default menu bar location is fine for everything other than mac os; if your program might be run on macs as well, simply set the java property com.apple.macos.useScreenMenuBar=true to set the menubars mac style (it will be ignored by other platforms and they will still respond correctly.
as for shortcut keys, they are *always* selected by the programmer in terms of the letter then choose to use (it's up to them to follow the programming guides), but the modifier keys (ctrl vs alt vs cmd) is easy enough- don't specify which one! use the system default modifiers- java.awt.Toolkit.getMenuShortcutKeyMask()
as for the location of buttons, yeah, that can be an issue if you don't want to add extra code... everything else is cake.
What swing text editor do you use? some suck, some are great (both in terms of quality and performance). if a text editor is slow on that class machine in swing, it's not a well programmed piece of code, or something's wrong with your box.
The main reason it isn't is that the developer kits come out after it does for the other platforms, if it comes out at all- for example, are we EVER going to see java3D on Macs?
defeated argument? i don't have particularly strong feelings about the matter either way; i skydive, design airplanes for a living, *and* am in the market for an suv. just ironic that those *protesting* the suvs chose to do so in such an enviromentally unfriendly matter!
umm, isn't the recreational use of airplanes- which use a lot of gas and pollute a lot more than the worse suv's- including to dump suv's out of them, a lot worse than the suv's themselves?
why does the USAF need a bomber that's designed to be invisible to radar, deliver 16 nukes for defence? Why on earth does it need 144 of them?
1) the stealth bomber is obviously an excellent deterrent to other states
2) it carries conventional weapons also, not just nukes
3) there are only 20 of them, not 144
4) even though they cost more, they are COST EFFECTIVE, in monetary terms, and regarding human life. you need less of them, they hit more targets (and are less likely to hit unintended targets, like civilians...), and they're more survivable for the pilots. take a look at how well the stealth fighter did in the persian gulf...
when you look at the big picture, and not just the unit cost, stealth planes appear far from exessive.
No matter how much the US spends on healthcare, as a proportion of GDP it ranks way below just about every other country in the developed world
that's because we have a larger gdp. that's a *GOOD* thing.
More poverty leads to more crime. Less poverty leads to less crime.
you're stating there's a causal relationship? i don't think i've ever seem any reputable studies state this; surely there's a correlation, but that's it.
You pay $760 a month for health care now. How much do you think you'd pay if you were diagnosed with a serious illness?
uhh, exactly the same because i have insurance!
Just about everywhere else in the western world, healthcare is free at the point of delivery
but relatively substandard...
I notice you conveniently forgot to mention a free education... ), if you want to go to university then you have the right to do so. Automatically..Which do you think is better? Which do you think will lead to a better educated population, capable of contributing more to their society?
i think a population that recognizes the importance of an education and is willing to make the personal sacrifices to get one is likely to get more out of it and be the dominant power as a result of it...
uhhh, you obviously don't use doors much! there are door knobs / levers, horizontal / vertical push / pull bars that are fixed / push, doors that open on a hinge, slide on rails, disappear into walls, open top and bottom independantly...
"the recent advent of "fly-by-wire" that Airbus "?
fly-by-wire isn't exactly recent, and I don't believe airbus was the first to use it. fwiw, no modern fighter jet can fly w/out computer controls...
as far as why cargo planes have no windows- while it certainly makes it easier to design- the obvious answer is that who cares if cargo can see out or not!!
> 1) The Ipod is smaller, lighter, and has a bigger screen.
well, the toshiba player has other advantages, such as removable pc-card drive...
>3) It costs, oddly enough, $10 more, even though Toshiba makes the hard disc, and it has *ahem* a smaller screen.
since when is screen size the only thing importand in price?
> 5) USB 2.0 can't power the unit, while firewire can, so I never have to bring an AC adaptor *anywhere*.
usb2.0 *DOES* deliver power, whether it's enough to power this device i don't know. and besides, w/ the ipod, it probably makes sense to bring an ac adaptor since ac outlets are much more prevalent than firewire ports!
not only couldn't the boeing plane not take off vertically, it barely had enough power for a good descent. not to mention jet exhaust directly aimed at the ground sucks if a) there's something flammable nearby (say, grass), b) there's something that melts underneath you (say, asphalt), of c) there's something that could die nearby (say, a person).
as far as the lockheed clutch, that thing is pretty freakin' sweet. are you forgetting these were *X* planes, and NOT *YF* planes? it's SUPPOSED to test new ideas and new designs, something I felt Boeing didn't do at all...

um, you realize the reason ebay has those rules isn't to protect you, but so they can collect their commision, right?

dude, if you're doing web work, shouldn't you NOT be a font freak? you don't know what systems people are using, and what fonts they have installed...
firewire ports seem more prevalent on laptops- sony's and dell laptops come w/ unpowered firewire ports.
uhh, yeah, but you need to find a firewire *port* if you don't bring along an ac adaptor!

that's why missin planning is still so important and the ops guys are still around... in even conceptual design, the ops guys get consulted early...

It's a variation of the pratt & whitney F119-PW-100 engine in the f22. same core, different details.
