    WHAT? You think the figure is based on population?!? It's based on AREA! Geez. If we had the US population all fit inside S. Korea, then and only then would your comparison mean anything at all.

    This great infrastructure will have to be well proven before corporate and economic interests are satisfied. There is no bandwidth guarantee - even if the literal wiring is there - it's just NOT that simple!

    I understand, but the same administration that proposed the war also proposed reworking our power grid - obviously, their reccomendations were ignored.

    And Americans don't think terrorism started 9/11/01- just for the record. I don't think I want my government wasting money on trying to cover the US in cable though. We'll leave that to businesses and let the free market handle it - as it should.

    wtf. What country are you talking about? How the hell ? ? ? Do you know how large the US is? Do you realize the slight difference in land area ? ? ? Not to mention the problem of justifying such an idea with uneven population densities.

    Or level an entire country, save generations of Iraqis, and stop a tyrannical ruler.

    However you would like to look at it.

    (The timeframe would not increase in the US though. It would be pointless to start an infrastructure that would likely be dated before its completion date.)

    This infrastructure will require amazing redundancy to truly maintain 50-100 Mbps throughout the country. If companies move server farms and whatnot to Korea, imagine the impact on the existing network. Obviously to maintain the said infrastructure it would require more money - and who's going to pay? And then the situation becomes what is the bandwidth coming out of the country? Fast bandwidth is not easy.

    Are you saying the US should fund this in Korea? Otherwise I would assume you mean wiring the US, which would clearly cost upwards of a trillion dollars - a number that is slightly more important.

    Shouldn't it be scaled to the coding population, not just the population? You're scale assumes that everyone in the country is a potential programmer.

    I believe their ranking system is flawed. Look at how many were rated from the US. That has to pull down the average. Croatia probably has their best 11 programmers signed up and they got sixth place for it. The only country with >200 coders registered is the US. I don't think their stats page is meant to be a rule at all.

    What about privacy conerns regarding health insurance?

    What would keep the grocery store from releasing this information to insurance companies so that people that eat too much of this or that are denied coverage?

    I realize that it is optional now, and that legally something could be done, but why pass millions of privacy laws about things such as this. Why not just STOP COLLECTING THE DAMNED INFORMATION TO BEGIN WITH!

    Information is not always a Good Thing [tm]. It is infinitely more often a way for those with power to manipulate those without. Everytime you allow someone to track something you do you are giving them power to use it against you in anyway they can dream of.

    At some point there has to be some sort of revolt against this . . . I'm waiting.

    I'd really love to bitch VIA out for that one. Releasing drivers for RH7.2 WTF?!? Who the hell is that useful for? People the just bought a brand new motherboard that use a (?two year?) old distro - and the driver was released in the past six months (April, I believe).

    We NEED to create an internet over the existing structure to return the internet to its previous state of not being shit. Back when eBay was a reliable service, Google had a hideous logo and most websites red top to bottom with no side panels because tables were too advanced.

    Forget about the design I mentioned; I'm not talking about the HTML of it. Remember the time frame - back when AT&T gave diskettes of Netscape to customers so that they would have a web browser. We can create this Internet over the existing protocol. Let's do it. Let's do it NOW.

    There are enough people here to accomplish the technical feat, what is holding us back? The research has been done; we know how to get things to work all we need is the same universities to be on board with is that were before and are now.

    This is a call to arms (and even if it is laughed at it is certainly worth a shot).

    My roomate is a car guy. I explain computers to him in brute car language, and he explains cars to me in 1337 speak. It is a technical coexistence. We're both in the college of Engineering at the Uni (compsci and mech.engr), and I'd say we have a good bit in common with most engineers - science and technology are a common language.

    All it takes is a common language.

    If it is for people that have never been through a hurricane, it is a weak depiction of their power. If it is for those that have it is silly. He took more pictures of stores and ooooow, rain and wind. My local newspaper's coverage is infinitely better.
