This is a document describing the distribution of the source code used on the TomTom GO device, which falls under the GNU General Public License (the GPL).
The GPL'ed source code used in TomTom GO falls into three categories:
1. The Linux kernel for ARM, with modifications by TomTom.
2. The GNU C library (glibc), which is used unmodified.
3. BusyBox, which is used unmodified.
So , what exactly is the big deal here ? The used the linux kernel , glibc and busybox . The last two being unmodified , so they don't really count as "released by TomTom" . The modified linux kernel was released because of the gpl , and it was probably a very small price to pay instead of developing their own operating system for the device or buying from some vendor (anybocy has any clue to what where they useing before ?) .
It's not like they've released the source to their software or anything like that . What are you all going to do with the modified kernel ? Make a patch so you can run GNOME on the device ? If so , it's in TomTom's advantage . They're in a win-win situation , don't you see ? Not like it's someting to be ashamed for . But you have to realise that there's no charity involved .
As a side note we've bought their PDA software (all European maps included) for my boss to use in his latest trip . Well , the package has just now arrived to customs , a week too late , and my boss is happily roaming Europe with eMule software on his PDA , haveing no other choice.... No comment !
I live in one of those countries that has been a long time favorite on all kinds of blacklists . Whell , to be onest , at first these was justified . I mean , about 6-8 years ago everybody new someone who was in the internet ordering business:) , and I don't think any bank was issueing international credit cards then . That was arround the time when cc generators actually worked .
But now things changed quite a bit . First there's the minor issue of the local FBI bureu . Cc's are not that easy to obtain know , script kiddies are ceritainly out of the business . And if you're that good , you're probably haveing a well paid job admining something , or getting your visa . Script kiddies are now conning people on ebay , but if you think somebody on the other side of the planet is getting a good deal from you with shipping by AmericanExpress , taxes and all... you pay for your naivity
OTOH , this blacklist thing is not bothereing me much . I have my own card , nobody refused it by now (google , hosting companies , domain registars etc.) but i'm not buying anything that needs shipping . Godaddy.com blocked all of it's customers from here (without anounceing them first at least) , but i've asked my registar and they said they will do no such thing (keeping my fingers crossed).
The only thing that's really annoing is that paypal is not sending money over here , and WesternUnion's charges are huge , so working on rentacoder.com and such is not really a good deal .
1) Diesel particles have been proven to cause arround 70-80% of lung cancer cases . So it's no joke . Hopefully diesel particle filters will get into mass production soon.
2) Hybrids are in a totally different league then diesels . Hybrids not only use all of the available power of an engine by running it at full load all of the time (it's a smaller engine) , but also can use a lot of new technology like using the braking time to charge the batteries (if i'm not mistaken the Prius uses it's fly-wheel as the rotor of the alternator to achieve this) .
Indeed , it seems that the author skipped a lot of those history classes as the Industrial Revolution was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the article . Oh , and I hated history classes.
Back OT and to recent times , isn't each new version of the windows server ed. designed to lessen the need for IT staff ? Yet I see no shortage in MCSA/E positions .
And if the author is right , is there anything to do ? Banning shell scripts maby....
Not to mention the 3Gb worth of e-books stashed on my harddrive .
Anyway , i do think Microsoft is actually happy with you pirating MSSQL for learning it . It may not be that good for buissness , but it shure beats you using open-source db's . Cause in the long run , they'll still get their money . If not from you , from your employer .
And my pirated Win 2003 server copy is .... well , i'll be ... It's legal . According to the site from $parent at least .
So what have we learned ? You CAN get legal Microsoft software from warez sources !!! Great news people .
