One of the great ironies of Slashdot is that the people running it are probably among the most markedly anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian as educated people can be, and yet they fiercely defend the power heirarchy in place.
It's absurd to think that a hypertext-based medium won't have hypertext ads. I think it would be more frustrating to see an ad for something and then have to google it.
Remember, Ballmer is the guy who, in reference to the DOJ investigation of their business practices said of the Attorney General (and I'll just paraphrase)..., "attorney general can go to Hell".... very rude in and of itself, and unforgivably, he used a "go to"....
I'm pretty sure hell is considered harmful as well...
Well, it doesn't run OS X, but my SPARCStation IPX has an extremely tiny enclosure despite having a full-sized scsi hard drive. So, don't tell me it can't be done.
Well, microsoft has been slowly making their OS more and more like UNIX. Apple finally came to their senses and started shipping something that essentially is UNIX, so I guess in a way, microsoft is copying apple. They're just not doing a very good job.
Of course, for everyday tasks, when asked to choose between the Aqua GUI and the commandline, one would be a fool to pick the commandline.
yes, there's clearly no advantage to having every program on the system readily available and the ability to string commands together with pipes. Plus, we all know how GUIs are inherently more scriptable.
I use MySQL as the backend for a message board I run from my home. I've never had a problem with my tables being corrupted due to power failure. Why? Because I have my computer hooked up to a UPS.
When the power goes out for an extended period, the UPS notifies the computer and shuts it down. It neutralizes the threat of failure by making it a non-threat rather than depending on excessive protection at the software level.
I think it's pretty absurd to be comparing VB to something like perl or python. Even fans of dynamic languages readily admit that VB is pretty useless.
Languages only succeed when they are closely tied to hacker-friendly platforms.
That included copying IBM's mistakes -- the biggest of which was using one of the worst OSs ever made. Not by today's standards, but by the standards then.
By today's standards, it's still pretty much the worst, but it's called Windows Me now.
But Base-12 isn't easily divided by 5. Clearly, the best system would be base 60. It would then be easily divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30.
Hey, remember when Ray Kurzweil said this 5 years ago?

Only an idiot would think giving away the source code to their program would benefit Dish Networks
yes, because clearly all of their profit comes from the sale of these DVR systems.
Actually Joy is Java. You're thinking Kay.
Because old ideas magically become new and better when you implement them in java.
Well, ther were going to do the whole thing as a hobby, but then that particular myth was debunked, so now they need to find a source of revenue.
And it's so secure that even I can't get admin privileges...
more likely, they'll write it as kApple.
Can I do the opposite and add more explicit content?

If they win, will I get my money back?
Now, any computational linguist will tell you, making a grammar checker actually work right is next to impossible.
'(THIS IS WHY I ONLY WRITE IN UNAMBIGUOUS LANGUAGES (LIKE LISP))

historically there has never been a TV piracy problem until a couple of years ago.
Cable was started as a form of TV piracy.

1. Whoops.
2. What does this button do?
3. PROFIT!!!!
error: cannot have comma outside of a backquote.
More of a "I suck too much at science and math to prove you wrong." than "That isn't correct."
That's not entirely true, thanks to Quantum Immortality.
