  1. Re:Storm Troopers were clones? on Star Wars Original Trilogy Gets DVD Release Date · · Score: 1

I've only read a few Star Wars books, but I remember the ones I read saying that after the fall of the Empire, the warlords governing the remaining pieces of the empire started recruiting real people to work as Stormtroopers because they didn't have access to the clone factories anymore.

But I'm not exactly a Star Wars scholar.

    Dear Anonymous Coward,

Your post makes an excellent point and should be elevated to 5 instead of languishing at 0. I have been searching years for a way to succinctly enunciate my feelings on spam. You have said better than I have found anywhere. Let me repeat that just because it so well said:

"Free speech is about freedom of content. It is not freedom to force everyone to listen."

Excellent. I feel the same way you do about my inbox.

I agree with you, that a person or company should use the best tool for the job. But that is not bias, it is just good common sense. :-)

I think the bias this discussion is talking about is that people who know C++, Java, etc. sometimes look down on people who use PHP, Perl, etc. as not being as talented.

  5. I doubt it will die on U.S. Proposes Centralized Internet Surveillance · · Score: 1

(I'm a U.S. Citizen who also finds this all very disturbing.)

I agree with you, they probably would bumble around for the first several years or decade. But the problem is that Government has inertia on its side. They would just keep plugging away at it until they finally got it working. In the mean time you would hear horror stories about normal people being wrongly accused of evil things (the victims of some bad SQL LEFT JOINS ;-) ).

You might think that these stories would cause a public outcry and cancel the project for good. I really hope this would be so, but I am too cynical to expect it. I think a much more likely scenario is that a bunch of people's live are made miserable as part of the beta stage and the our government roles ponderously on towards its goal of policing the world (and no, I don't like this).

I doubt the project would be cancelled, and if it were, the government would probably just try again a few years/decades later.

    Thoughts, anyone?

  6. Microsoft Office's TCO on Halloween VII · · Score: 1

Even though Microsoft Office is very expensive, I believe it is tougher to launch a good attack against its TCO. I work at a company with 50+ employees which provides mostly web-based services.

Even though I am a big open-source advocate, I can clearly see that Microsoft Office pays for both itself and Windows through increased productivity.

I think the real threat that Linux poses to Windows right now is in the server area. When you compare LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) with Windows, IIS, ASP, and SQL Server, I believe the Linux combination beats Microsoft's products soundly in TCO mainly through security, stability, and cost.

In order to start making a dent in their desktop market, we need a desktop operating system that is easy to install and use! My bets are on the soon-to-be-renamed OpenBeOS project.

I was as sceptical as you. Every news and bb post regarding this story all referenced the one IRC chat, and we all know IRC channels can be hijacked. However, I just discovered solid proof of Farscape's demise--at least on the Sci-fi channel.

  8. This is a matter of principle on Australia Oppresses Jedi · · Score: 1

I completely agree with you. So many people say they are of one religion and yet don't live it.

Also, think of the principle of this. You and I both know the law of averages states that at least 5 people in Australia saw Star Wars, had a spiritual epiphany, and actually decided to believe in the Jedi Religion for real. If the state assumes this ALL is a joke and throws all the responses out, or worse: fines them, it is wronging those poor souls who truly believe in it.

  9. The reason marketing is needed on OpenBeOs Developers Talk About Progress · · Score: 1

I agree with you, that the most successful non-profit and profit organizations are the ones who market most effectively. However, I do not believe it is necessary. A key difference between meatspace organizations like these and an OSS project, is that they employ people and thus need to get money coming in or they will run out of cash. Most OSS projects--including OpenBeOS--have almost zero expenses. Thus they can spend zero on marketing and let word of mouth slowly spread the word as they improve the product. Linux did this and I think we all agree that it was a big success. But it did take time. Time is one of Open Source Software's best friends.
