Full ack, except on one point - disposable computers. Seeing how the tech gets more and more complex, the chance of ever having a computer that doesn't need "constant software fixes" is rather miniscule...
it should be noted that the world bank, more specifically the international bank for reconstruction and development did not bank roll this project, because the human and environment costs were too great, even for them. this project was funded mainly by private contributions, lots of which are American, such as Morgan Stanley, just to name one.
Since when do international banks have any kind of scruples? I guess it has to do with the fact that China is possibly becoming a new super power within a few decades, and that's not something they might like....
I think, my dear friend, there is no aspect of life that would not get significantly easier without marketeers;)

1.37 cent??? Is this man completely fakakte?
People already got used to the euro and are calculating it's value in their old currency every time they have to handle prices. I've heard that certain elderly french people even convert the euro prices to old france, a currency that expired decades ago. If you add to that such superodd values, you can expect total chaos throughout of europe - except perhaps for germany, where the exchange rate between DM and Euro is almost 2:1;)
Well... if you could decide on the format of everything you wish to watch, then your argument would be valid. However, in reality, sometimes you want to watch something that may only be available in one particular format. Thus, it is a good thing if your player can handle a great variety of formats.
That's the most stupid idea I have heard all day, and that's saying a lot.
Besides the fact this is absolutely not technically possible (how do you want to do the accounting?), it would require cooperation from all internet-connected countries in the world. Somehow, I doubt that will happen.
That would be possible, but do you think it's faster than GLX? It both goes over a network first... and I guess the security implications of such an attempt are more serious than the ones present in GLX implementations....
You can make an excellent sign with a black marking pen and a hunk of cardboard.
Despite the name, food stamps are not edible.
Ok, that's some tips for people wanting to run their own business from Scott Adams' "Casual day has gone too far'.
Now for some real tips. As someone who has been running a company for 3 years now, I'd recommend you ask yourself the following questions:
Is there a market for your services? How big is it? How big will your slice of it be?
Do you have the resources/funds to cover several months or even years in which you might not make any profit?
Can you convince your potential customers that you/your company are the right one for the job?
Do you already have a list of potential customers?
Are your prices realistic?
I personally needed 3 years before I actually started to make money with my company. There was a lot of bad experiences and such, but in the end it was worth it. The independence and all.
Another tip: Many newcomers make the same fatal mistake the first time around. When calculating offers, they think like people, not like companies, and they somehow have this weird idea that if they're cheap enough, they'll get a foot in the door. Don't. If you sell yourself below your price, people will think you're stupid. They will abuse you and then throw you away.
PS: I know I'm slightly off-topic, but I think you might be worrying about the wrong issues here.
The thing with that is that the gov has a strong interest in people being afraid of terrorists because it wants to limit your freedom, and a looming, omnipresent terrorist threat pushes almost everyone into submission. How else can you explain the fact that the patriot act now became permanent without any kind of serious resistance?
I think the problem lies in the upper regions of the protocol layers, not at the bottom or at the driver level. It's not the Xlib or Xt, it's what's on top of that that's bloated and poorly organized. I think.
If you download the source code and type./configure --help, one of the first options is gui-related. You have to turn it on explicitely. Also I think there is a binary version available on the mplayer homepage that is gui-enabled. I don't use it at all though, so I don't know if it's any good. All I know is it has skins.
More like "greater profit"...

Thats the more accurate numbers, right. The European Commission will most likely pay the biggest sum, and that's just made up of the member countries.
:( They said 2.5 ... but if it's on Galileo's site, I guess that figure will be right.
3.2 billions? Heck, can't even trust local tv stations anymore
I personally like the idea a lot. One step towards a united Europe and less dependency on the US.
The european GPS system (dubbed "Galileo") is expected to cost 2.5 billion EUR. This project is financed by EU member countries directly, not by ESA.

Just out of pure curiosity, which distro are you using?
Yeah, ok. But you're one of the smart few. Most people see $99.99 and think "Wow! Thats under a 100 bucks! What a nice price!"
And because the stupidity of the many outweighs the intelligence of a few, we'll never get rid of those psychoactive prices...
Delicately put ;)

Marketeers consider those prices psychologically important, because they make prices appear lower than they really are - so don't get your hopes up.
intimidating features???
;))
No hard feelings but..are you sure you're using the right OS?

Those guys knew perfectly well what they were doing when they didn't name the child "Star Trek Enterprise" but just plainly "Enterprise".
You hate it? Ok. It's not canon. There. I said it.
But SIR! May I remind you of space chorps directive 1209-b/2 where it clearly states...
Say what you will, but RedHat still beats SuSE. What's with all their proprietary runlevel scripts. Always get in your way.

Actually, it DOES have a gui.

If you download the source code and type
If this is any help to u, mplayer tries to open files with the same name as the movie file minus extension plus one of these extensions:
utf, UTF, sub, SUB, srt, SRT, smi, SMI, rt, RT, txt, TXT, ssa, SSA, aqt, AQT
I don't know about you, but when I write code I mostly curse missing/obsolete/faulty documentation and other people's bad code...
