I think that genetic engineering can, in the hands of those who are honest, wise, and well intentioned, also be used to enhance human abilities without trying to alter human nature

Will you please take a look around you and tell me what you see. If it's not all honest, wise and well intentioned people, then please remain silent throughout the rest of the discussion.

No seriously, your expectations are rather unrealistic. What makes you think none of those scientists deviates from them? And none of the entities funding this do? From a statistical point of view, that's rather unlikely.

But I also like other shows that have nothing in common with Lexx. I guess my expectations of good Scifi are that I have a good time watching it, that there's not too many poorly "designed" aliens (people with funny noses/ears/hair) (Startrek aliens) or poorly designed ones as in Muppets in Space (aka Farscape)

Also I like scifi that is actually getting somewhere, storywise. That's one of the reasons I don't like Enterprise as much as DS9 (Or B5 for that matter, before anyone gets upset ;>)

If you browse the trivia section of Star Trek I, you will see that Paramount has quite a history of misinforming the public about what their plans are. They said they would start a new series, when at the same time they planned to make a Motion Picture instead.

That's just one example. I have heard official and unofficial rumors about the release of Enterprise season 1 on dvd. According to a Paramount executive, it was scheduled for march. March 2002.

And DS9? I lost count of how many announcements there were for DS9 DVDs. What I do know is that most of them were official Paramount announcements. There's been catalogs of Vendors that stated the availability of DS9 DVDs. And what happened? Nothing.

I have my serious doubts about this. But if DS9 will be released on DVD - I'll still be the first to order them. And that even though Paramount has deceived their fans so often. It's just.. that series is just so good :O

Most are annoyed and bored. I think if in that time you'd be spending your time on a computer answering questions, thus helping the doctor, it would be a better way to spend your time.

As a geek, of course I'd love to be working with a letter-sized tablet pc and a pen :D But if it's some old 486, just as well. At any rate, I think this is a very good idea, as long as nobody even thinks of

One good example of the real meaning of "integration" (or lack thereof, actually) revolves around the KDE printing infrastructure: Mozilla does not use it, even though it would let Joe Schmoe Average User decide if he wants duplex printing, multiple pages per sheet, etc. from an easy-to-use dialog box and not have to pull some serious voodoo to make things print out the way he wants it to.

Leader? Unification? What in the world are you talking about? That's not an advantage, that's a horror vision! The thought of having to use say KDE for lack of alternatives makes me cry! I want to have a choice of what WM to use...

And what is all this fuss about the war? Sure, I don't like Microsoft either, but my opinion is that Linux is just not the right thing for every user! That has nothing to do with elitarism. I just think that for most 'normal' people windows is the way to go and if they, out of some 'i wanna be like the hacker next door' mood think they absolutely have to use linux, let them, but also let them learn their way around. Sure, many things can be improved, but trying to limit choice ("unification") is STUPID.
