I [sic] the security of this country relies on M$ we may as well just turn it over to the terrorists right now.
What do troops in iraq have to do with US security?
Anyhoo, US army running linux is sad news. It means my fav OS is used as an aid to kill people now. Go ahead, mod me down. But don't think that will change my mind.
I for one didn't let anyone beat me up. I may not be superman, but if someone tried to fsck with me, they still got themselves a bloody nose. When you're trying to make a stand against bullies, it's not about how strong you are, it's how you react to them. If you stand there, shaking, you can be sure you get beaten up. If you get into fighting posture, no matter how rediculous it may look (heh.), then they know they can't just beat u up without getting smacked in the face themselves. And often enough, that's enough to make them leave.
But then, my experiences are not that of an american teen and I understand the situation in the US schools is a lot worse than here in Germany....
My old EP-8KTA+ suffered from this problem. I gave it to a friend who's an electronics freak and he checked out out.. said he's gonna try and replace the capacitors. I wonder if he'll get it to work again.
The effects were that first, I couldn't get it to run with my old power supply. Somehow the mainboard failed to switch it on. I had to use one that would switch on when u switched the power button on the backside. Then it just failed to work alltogether...Ah well.
I can speculate why they are enforcing this policy. When you run a community service where time, money, resources and effort are donnated by a large number of people for a certain purpose and a large number of the users use it for an entirely differnet purpose, costing you a lot of resources, and then also attack the service so that user you want to support can't use it, I guess I personally would be a little pissed.
DCC sends don't use up any of the server's resources, and saying that people downloading warez are behind the attacks lacks proof.
Do you think losing lots of hangers on is really going to worry them - every user on the system costs some supporter of DALnet money somewhere, its not like a membership site where they get revenue. Explain to me if I run a DALnet server why exactly I should be worried about losing users that use my box to swap warez, p0rn or coordinate a Sub7 attack on another machine?
Did it not occur to you that the users who might download warez might be identical to those that chat? Not all 'leechers' are just leechers, a lot of them do chat. And why should they be worried about losing users? Well, normally, I'd say there is no good reason. But Dalnet opers and admins have always been known to be very vain about stats, especially user numbers.
The point is: you can chat on every network, but you can't leech on all nets (anymore). So what criterium do you think people who occasionally leech will use when they pick their fav network?
That said, I think this whole fuzz is just a PR stunt - "Look, mom, we're still alive!" - after all it's not like dalnet is crowded with warez kids right now (not anymore).
You know what's really funny - most of the warez kids already left when dalnet was down for almost a month! They found a new home elsewhere. This announcement is just pointless.
They say that now that all the tv episode channels that made DalNET so (in)famous have already left for other networks - what a joke!
Empty words from people who administrate an IRC network that has lost all meaning in the illegal communities. Every major channel (and not only the illegal ones) have left for one of the other networks, like Efnet, tv-eps or irc-chat. I bet the only people who still come to dalnet are the ones that are looking for their old buddies and then leave pretty quickly when they learn from the channel topic to which network their channel has moved.
DalNET administration: you're just being pathetic now.
Yes but see, my point is that that wasn't my point, and I think I made my self pretty clear here.
And btw, yes, they lost their lifes, but at least they had an experience nobody on slashdot will ever have, and that everyone is dreaming of - visiting space. Seeing how enormously complex this whole matter is, and what kind of forces there are at work, I'm surprised something like this doesn't happen more often. Hydracine, for example, I think is the strongest non-nuclear explosive, and they use it for fuel apparently...
Of course a loss of life is always tragic, but I seriously think most people's perception of what is a tragic loss and what isn't, is seriously distorted. Do you hear a big outcry of anger and pain because the US military will slaughter 10,000s of people? No. Why? They're just arabs in a far away country. THAT is my main point.
Ok, I must admit you seem to be better informed on the subject than I am:)
Yet, you can still argue that NASA's most significant reason for existance is military usability. And you could argue that the whee bit left of scientific work is not much more than a sad excuse.
And..in what kind of times do we live where it's ok for nation a to bomb nation b just because nation b might, in a decade or so, possess the same kind of weapons that nation a already has? And let's be honest, Israel's history of wars is not exactly making them look innocent either.
Don't get me wrong here. I don't want anyone to have weapons of mass destruction, but that includes the 'Leaders of the free world' as well.
Since you obviously didn't notice, let me tell you: I used the Ariane 5+ story as a means to point to issues that are actually relevant. Please re-read my post and try get what it was actually about.
And besides, name calling isn't exactly gonna convince me of your point. Thank you.
...laughed when our Ariane 5+ exploded a couple of months ago. So, do you see me laughing now?
Not quiet, but don't expect me to shed tears. The fact that this was a science mission is an exception from the rule. Most of the time, shuttles drop off new military satellites into space. Of the 7 crew members, 6 were members of armed forces. One even of special fame: the israeli on board dropped his bombs in every major war Israel has fought in the last decades. Even when Israel bombed down that iraqi nuclear reactor in 1982 that allegedly could be used for the production of plutonium for weapons. It couldn't.
And while we're at it: everyone's crying out loud over 7 people, when in just 6 weeks, tens of thousands will die in Iraq, and nobody will give a damn. Don't you think there's something wrong here?
After reading a good portion of the posts of that thread, I'd say debian should just not include an MPlayer package for the following reason: They fear they could be sued for including a package with questionable legality and their only idea how to solve this problem is to remove everything they think might set of someone. Stuff like libavcodec.
However, this would cripple the program beyond useless and probably make Debian users think it was totally uncapable a program. I say, if you can't include a player like this in it's full glory, don't. Maybe they could provide some information to the user where to get MPlayer? But throwing it in the same toilet they threw Xine in (ie, leaving out everything that might make it useful), that can't be the answer...
I tell you, if I had any mod points left, I'd rate this insightful. Too bad I wasted them all on "IN SOVIET RUSSIA..." posts:[
Ah well, next time...

There are also a few rather large American military bases in Germany...and I'm betting most (or all) the soldiers could care less about soccer, but they will all watch the Super Bowl...they spend money too (and not all of it is spent at the base)...
Yeah, I think most of it is spent in those special stores they visit..forgot what they're called...
Super Bowl commercials (as with all good commercials) tend to be funny, over the top, and above all entertaining (noone is going to buy your products if your commercial makes them bored)...
I'll forward this hot information to german advertizing companies..I'm sure it's new info to them.. most ads here are SO boring:(
Anyway, thanks for clearing that up...
For some odd reason, you can watch the superbowl on tv here in Germany - live.
I don't think even a 1000 people here care to see it, and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to see the ads German TV puts in the breaks either. It's sort of a mistery to me why people are so darn fascinated with ads anyway...must be an american thing:]
Yes, not all is perfect in the Linux world. But this rant is so far from being anywhere close to objectivity it hurts. I personally think Arpad Gereoffy did a great job with mplayer. So the gui sucks? DOH...Isn't it more important that it works, and works almost better than ANY other player for ANY other OS? I don't know any other player that can play so many formats -.avi,.mpg,.mov,.asf,.wmv,.rm, you name it, mplayer plays it!
I really think that, if some people can't appreciate a good program, maybe they just should go back to using windows and complain about that :
I wonder too. That stuff used to be registered on freshmeat as 'Freeware' until someone wrote them a message about all this registering and NDA business. They changed it to 'Proprietary with free trial' now...
I got sms on my handy from some strange number. I found out it was emails that were forwarded to my number. Obviously, the old owner of my number set that up and I couldn't switch it off. So I wrote the company those sms came from (t-online), and they ignored me.
I wrote again and again and eventually, I threatened them with a lawsuite, and only after that did the sms stop. Sad but true. My advice: threaten them with a lawsuite. It helped me.
I should add that for some real odd reason, most sms deliveries happened at night. Now I only bought this cell phone to receive alert messages from our webservers. Via SMS. You can imagine how that got me started from sweet REM sleep to total panic in under 1 second;)))
..it doesn't prevent you from placing your hands on the kb in an all unnatural angle...
The only solution is a good keyboard - like the Siemens KB PC-E (E as in ergonomic). It's a bit like the MS natural keyboard, only it's a) not from MS (which is a big plus) and b) it's more "configurable".. you can adjust it to your likings more. Looks a little strange, granted, but ever since I bought it, the pain in my hands is gone.
Well I also had to buy a new mouse. I took this one that looks like a joystick. It makes me an object of pitty and laughter, but that's worth it. It's called an Anir Mouse and once you used it for a few months you can actually work as fast as before - without the pain!

Who ever came up with the word 'blog' should be taken out and fed to the dolphins.
Maybe I'd include something more spiritually meaningful in my message, but you can be sure I'd include a couple of lottery numbers!

Indeed, newer Mircs have a list of accepted file types - by default, all file types are rejected. Including exe and the likes.
