Totally. I've met Jimmy Wales, he's a good guy.
Sollog, on the other hand, is a pile of crap. Who puts pictures up of someone's daughter with nasty comments like that? A coward, that's who.
I totally agree. I actually interviewed with Wales and received a job offer from him. I also met his wife when I was at the office. They are some of the nicest people I've ever met. In fact, I was really impressed with Wales when I met him. The fact that this sollog bozo has pictures up of his wife and his daughter really pisses me off. Jimbo Wales is a good man.
If you want to attack Wales or Bomis or Wikipedia, fine, but don't say nasty things about his wife and children. That's totally ridiculous. Sollog is a coward.
Wikipedia is an excellent reference... I often use it to get up to speed on a topic. Once I've learned a little, I go off and search other sites for more information.
Wikipedia is an absolutely invaluable resource... the fact that some of the data might not be 100% goes with the territory.
I use wikipedia almost every single day... our customers are from all over the country, and it's as simple as typing 'Wikipedia ' to bring up almanac information about them... including population, city, climate, ect.
I agree. Brazil is a notable omission. Overall tho, I found the list to be of high quality. The only questionable film was Solaris, which is certainly worse than Brazil.
Thanks for your comments. I've been holding off on installing XP SP2 until I could guarantee that I can still run Nmap. It's the one tool I can't live without.
And while I'm at it, thanks for providing such a great tool to the community. I've been using Nmap for years, and it's helped me tremendously with both my programming and my system administration. I personally really, really appreciate the work you have done.
That's probably true. I learned to type via various programs and courses... but I REALLY learned to type chatting on ICQ and communicating in Everquest. Talking smack in quake is also pretty good training too.
He owns and runs Bomis.com. They're located in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego. When I visited the offices, they were off of Garnet street.
I interviewed there when they were trying to start Nupedia, the wikipedia predecessor. I got the job, but ended up not taking it. My employer at the time had their admin and top programmer quit, and he was basically SOL if I didn't stay. In retrospect, staying was probably the wrong call for me personally, but loyalty is important.
I can personally testify that Jimbo Wales is an awesome person. I met him several times... he's smart, funny, and a kick ass perl programmer. The interview with him was actually a lot of fun. He's interested in programming, his wife, whom he describes as 'a babe' (she is), and sailing. He's got an MBA as well... and used what he learned to start businesses like Bomis and non-profits like wikipedia. I regret not working for/with him, as he is very sharp and personable. Such is life.
If this is actually true, and you really are a developer at MS, thanks for sharing... it's interesting to read what's actually going on inside Microsoft.
Most of Slashdot is so negative toward Microsoft, I often wonder if we drive off or shame into silence any developers who work there. A friend of mine from high school (who wrote brilliant code) works there... so I can say with confidence that I know at least one guy at Microsoft who is smart, honest, and writes brilliant code. He's the type of person who should be contributing to and reading Slashdot... and if he isn't, it's the community's loss.
I for one would love to hear more about why things are done certain ways, or what the development culture is like at Microsoft. Windows XP is a pretty good piece of software... things are improving. I run linux, but I run Windows at work, and I have noticed over time how much better the products have become. Sure, security is still terrible, and IE is a piece of crap, but overall the usability and stability of Microsoft products has noticably improved.
Perl is still an excellent option IMHO. For me, the most important feature of a language is the amount of support available. Perl has so much documentation scattered around the web, it's usually very easy to find an example or get help with a problem. Also, the books are now all on version 2+, meaning most of the bugs have been worked out. With my Safari access, I have years of resources at my disposal. While I appreciate all that PHP offers, I still haven't been convinced that it is good enough to make me switch. The resources out in the community are far too attractive for me to fight my way back up the learning curve.
Plus, is there any greater comedian in the community than Larry Wall?
I've tried finding a google toolbar alternative for Firefox... it's the only feature of IE that I actually miss. The default searchbar is cool, but I use the highlight button to find the keywords... and it's missing.
I tried this, Googlebar, but I didn't like the lag it produced when I used it. After I installed it yesterday, it made my browser unresponsive when I highlighted... which just doesn't work for me.
Can anyone suggest an alternative? I'm really just interested in the highlight feature, as I used to use it all the time.
I just briefly read thru that document. It is an excellent read. Lots of the things they mention are fairly well known, but to have it all grouped together in a comprehensive document is a real godsend. Reminds me A LOT of bastille linux .
There is a huge advantage to have predefined profiles you can apply. I imagine myself using these security profiles to harden family member's PCs. I usually have neither the time nor the inclination to lock down my mother's computer.... so having some defaults and a quick checklist will save me a TON of time in the long run.
It's also nice to be able to send someone a link and tell them "Do this stuff" rather than walk them thru all the things they need to do to be safe. As I am sure most Slashdot readers have experienced, the unending number of tech calls from friends and family gets old after a little while. I think this document will help restore the free time that Uncle Bill has taken from me.
Nice sig. I'm with you 100%.
Not that Kerry's bad, but I'm not all that thrilled to be voting for him.
But a vote AGAINST Ashcroft... ah, now that's something that makes me truly proud to vote.
I was so bummed. I had to continue. Darth Rumsfeld kept kicking my ass.
I think the best character was Christoper Reeve. His small size allowed you to dodge most attacks. Best special move, probably Rosie Odonnell.. The rain of pink triangles pretty much rocked everything on the screen.
I do wish you could tab thru the dialogue tho... it really ruins the replay value.
Yeah, I'm getting it too... and it's obnoxious. I've been recently persuaded that this browser is the way to go. I was just about to start evangelizing it to normal users here at work... I hope they can get this sorted out quickly. The average user here at work is pissed off with all the security holes, spyware etc... I think they have a real opportunity here to grow.
The big red exclamation point in the lower right corner of the screen isn't exactly an eyesore, but it's obnoxious nonetheless. This needs to get fixed quickly. I'm getting the feeling that the.9 release was a bit more polished. I like the colors in.91, but if I could swap the colors for making the red exclamation go away, I would.
oh snap. genetics for teh win.
Wow. Guess who just got a new boyfriend in prison. Odds that the computer guy will get handed around like a bag of doritos?
for teh win!!!!1!
I agree. lame. Don't waste your time with this. It was boring.
Google up this, it's much better:
SW_ep3_trailer_captioned.wmv
It's the game captioned version of the episode 3 trailer.
You've been reading Cialdini, haven't you?

This is actually a really good point. Mod this up! How did it get zeroed?

It really is all about CPAN.

Perhaps we need a round of applause and some virtual beer all around. We might not have much, but we do have numbers.
...
Google-beta: What happen?
Google: Someone set up us the bomb.
Google: It's you
Slashdot:How are you gentlemen?
Slashdot: All your internet are belong to us.
So Good
