Bumps and dimples tend to make things fly more reliably, by letting small eddies of air whirl. The same effect can be seen in golf balls-- a golf ball with dimples (like all the ones today) will fly farther and straighter than a perfectly spherical one.
because I've talked to many educators about technology.
I've also talked to administrators, parents,
and students from primary and secondary schools.
There is *brilliant* work on this by Seymour Papert

and many, many teachers who also develop software.
Yes, there are profound problems with technology
in schools-- as in our everyday corporate world--
and tech is not a magic bullet for everything.

Sun puts lots of money and research into free tools,
some big examples being Java and Open Office.
Sun is also now among the largest Linux success stories,
selling a million new Linux installations to China,
and even more amazingly to consumers at Wal-Mart.
Does it matter if the CD says "GNU" or "Linux inside"
to the Chinese, or Wal-Martese, or end user?
Likely not. As long as Sun honors the GPL--
and Sun does seem to be honoring the GPL--
then how about looking at the positive side?
More Linux installations will lead to better
succes for all of us. I want to see easy installs,
good video drivers, plug-and-play printers, and more.
Sun's success will help us get this, so cheers to them.
If you can legally rip a stream, can you use enhancement tools to improve the quality?
And can these enhancement tools download higher-quality bits from P2P systems?
In other words, once you're able to listen to the song (on a low quality stream), do you have any rights to listen to a higher-quality version (downloaded P2P)?
From my experience running this kind of thing,
I highly recommend discussions via newsgroups.
They are easier to use than most web boards,
which leads to better/easier user feedback.
The newsgroups are easy to set up,
for examples see www.netwinsite.com.
The servers provide full text search,
straightforward email-to-news gateways,
various authentications, chat, etc.
Once you have your newsgroups working,
ask your participants what they use
for bug databases, source systems, etc.
Use the tools they know and recommend,
and you'll likely get better participation.
The Sun application server software team
has people with very deep backgrounds
and the right experience and equipment.
I was truly impressed working with them.
They do massive testing projects
and have all the necessary contacts
with other enterprise app companies.

The source code available at OpenOffice.org does not consist of all of the StarOffice code. Usually, the reason for this is that Sun pays

Instead: tell me what the tool is,
what it does-- ideally with screenshots--

especially for server software that threads.
I'm especially intrigued on how this will
work with the Java NIO (new IO) libraries,
which handle pooled selectable IO channels.
Niagra and Java NIO together looks like
a really fast way to do mass serving...
Can anyone comment on threads sharing IO?

they are the ones to fix this problem.
Second, if the technical staff does not fix it,
contact your school's Deans for intervention.
Third, if the Deans do not get the problem solved,
contact your school paper and ask for help.
This all shows that you're a team player,
in case you need to escalate it later.

you don't "save" using any of these, right?
Instead you commit, or upload, or send.
Maybe you'll click "Check" when you're ready,
and the file will do what it needs to do--
commit itself, upload itself, send, save, etc.
