Truth! It certainly looks like this is how religion co-evolves with the rise of large corporations.

I understand this is an authorized biography, so I'm sure Steve Jobs knew at least what it contained. Maybe he didn't care because he knew he was dying.

But I definitely understand his perspective that he could beat the cancer. Imagine his ego (and I really am trying not to sound insulting), but this is a man with his own distortion field who was very successful in his chosen field. I've heard similar stories about NFL players; because of the all the work and strong sense of self importance must have to be so dedicated to compete at the highest level, to a degree you think you're invincible. "That career ending injury was terrible for that other guy; but that couldn't happen to me."

A man that believed he could put a dent in the universe probably believed he could beat cancer on his own. I know if I get cancer I'm doing exactly what the doctor tells me, but that's also probably why I'm not the head of a multi-billion dollar company either.

  3. Context much? on Jobs Wanted To Destroy Android · · Score: 1

I think the context is important here: he's talking to a fellow board member who's also a board member of a competing company that has a similar product.

It seems more specific and personal than a company position.

So can you jailbreak an Android phone and update the OS to the latest yourself? Is there a blog or tracker anywhere with a phone-OS-company matrix that shows who lets you use what on what?

Hard to believe that I don't have a smart phone, but I now find myself needing to replace my burner pay-as-you-go with something real. I have an iPod Touch and have obviously looked at the iPhone, but the Android (especially the ICS phones) are intriguing. The only problem is it is hard to tell what's what. I don't want to go out and buy a new phone to find out that I can't get the latest OS on it. I know that it will have a limited lifespan, but I definitely don't want to get stuck with Eclair or Froyo.

  8. Standing on shoulders on Outlining a World Where Software Makers Are Liable For Flaws · · Score: 2

The solution seems a little too simplistic. Just look at any very large software project, like an operating system. Even a simple operating system like an iPod has a huge set of sub-licenses (go check out the Legal menu item, at least twenty on my nano). Large commercial projects often have code contributed from other sources; some open source, some not. If the problem comes from one of those contributions or sub-licenses, what happens?

I could definitely see Microsoft setup a fully owned subsidiary that gives free code to only Microsoft under Clause 1 (limited to refund) while the main shop sells it as a full operating system. "Oh, your computer is part of a bot-net? Sorry, that was a bug in the browser code. But since they gave that to us free, you get a refund of $0."

And people resort to writing trade secrets down on paper? Who knew there were so many luddites at ACM?!
