The t42 I was using had gentoo on it. No problems so far as I know but I only borrowed it from a friend for a week. I didnt use the wireless although its good to hear that Intel finally got around to releasing a centrino driver...
My current laptop is POS 2+ year old compaq. Its better than nothing...
Right. Which is why all of the kids who live with republicans want out of the house pronto...
Because like most things republicans have no sense of reality when it comes to raising children. Just look how bush turned out.::shudders::

Lets start with the obvious. The US has only been an economic power since the end of WWII. Thats 1 lifetime, not even that in some cases.
I have no issue leaving the US, perhaps you can explain to me which country wants to make me a citizen the second I hit their land so I can get a job without issue. Moving to another country to find a job when you are disadvantaged (being a non-national) and there are still an abundance of employable locals is not a desirable situation for anybody. The reason people flocked to america wasnt just jobs it was quality of life and freedom as well. There were tons of jobs available back in the day. People came here and got entry level jobs because the majority of the people here were already employed.
Take a look at the countries with major economic growth. China and India might be growing fast but they are still decades away from being anywhere near having depleted their labor resources or pricing themselves out of the market. Thats the true problem, right now the hotbeds for jobs are decades behind the rest of the world in most respects. The quality of life here is going down, the quality of life there is going up slowly. The question is where the two will meet. What if the quality of life world-wide is poverty ? I dont see a rosy future the way the global economy is heading.
I never said they were trying to sell to me, as a matter of fact my post implies the opposite.
I use enlightenment. Just about anything else annoy's me unlike anything on this earth related to computers not made by microsoft. I find icons and toolbars irksome and unsightly. I need to have edgeflip. I want window shading and icon box's. I want to be able to force my window manager to behave how I want, not how some usability guy in (wherever apple is located these days) wants it to, or make me take the long hard road out of hell to get it semi-usable.
I use my thumbs on the mouse buttons on my current laptop so I dont have an issue (at least not a major one. Playing games like this leaves the side of my thumbs rather sore).
It's all personal preference. To me macs are not appealing.
brushed Aluminum is still... to damn... something. I just prefer darker colors. Always have always will. I could deal with a dark titanium/gray color like what my cell is (nokia).
Ibooks are crap, no different than any hp/sony/gateway/whatever. To date I have used one laptop that impressed me an IBM thinkpad T42p. I have used many laptops (though I have only owned 2) and most of them (including ibooks... from a few years ago) felt cheap. I dont want a plastic laptop. Just my humble opinion that if I am paying 1k for something that I want it to be a good quality product. That includes the feeling of the product.
I am very aware that its not a technical issue, I'm also aware of WHY redhat is doing this. Redhat has no long term interest in Linux, they ultimately see themselves has becoming a services company. They are currently trying to "lock in" customers so they have a constant income stream during the transition.
Or at least so I have heard from some people. Weather its true or not... thats an exercise left to the reader. One thing is damn sure: they are not as OSS friendly or as customer friendly has they used to be.
Works on firefox with redhat, gentoo, debian and I would imagine just about any other OS. It does not however work with galeon or epiphany for whatever reason.
Tested epiphany and galeon. Neither one of which had any hi-jacked pop-ups, with galeon it bitches about not having a "pop-up blocker installed" apparently the built in version doesnt count. I tried the "non pop-up blocker" way as well. The only thing that happens is the citi-bank page reloads, nothing changes.
"the prices are quite similar. If you need support for more than installation and basic configuration, Windows 2003 is actually cheaper."
As several people have already pointed out in this discussion, 2k3 SBA does not include support in any way shape or form. The price's on support packages are similar, the one downside is from what I can see MS charges you one a per incident basis rather than having an all-in-one package.
Redhat is going down the tubes because they are going away from their base audience.
"For businesses that can't afford a full time server administrator and don't have any Linux expertise, it is quite possible that Windows just plain is a better choice."
If you cannot afford an admin you have no bussiness trying to use these products. What could the average small bussiness need something like this for if they cannot afford to pay a local college student 15k/year for some part time work ? They could save themselves the trouble and just sign up for a managed hosting account with any number of providers and come out way ahead in the long run.
If your trying to run a web store or something similar without having an admin your asking for trouble.
In many markets windows are a better choice because there is not a lot of people who know other platforms available. This is linux's biggest issue and its a self-feeding cycle.
Every single software company (any company really) has those policies. They are bussiness and are out to make money. They cannot afford to have people spending hours diagnosing problems only to find out that it wasnt their product that caused the problem.
Thats just the way the economics work out. You are probably better served by going with a free version or going to full-on support from a major player like IBM or even sun, at least that way you get 24x7 onsite (not cheap... but it works).
I was going to say IBM... perhaps Intel ? Maybe some sort of consulting firm. The only "computer" companies that even have that many employees are Intel, IBM and perhaps Oracle.
"If you are a "*nix" administrator w/o a security
clearance, you are SOL."
Truer words have not been spoken.
"When the unemployment runs out, the jobless
do stop getting counted. And one part-time
McJob is just as good statistically as the IT
job lost. What we are witnessing is the slow
disintegration of the USA's middle class."
EXACTLY. Speaking as a laid-off intermediate *nix admin I know exactly where your coming from. There are no longer any "skilled" positions in this country that allow the average person to live at a high quality of life. You either have to be management making a decent wage and hate your job and probably your life or you get stuck in a job sector thats going to crap. If your lucky enough to have clearance and the skill to get a job.
The jobs of today are being sent overseas, the jobs of tomorrow are not here yet. Great times we live in. People wonder why I want to leave....
My three problems with apple powerbook laptop are simple:
1. its fucking white. I hate WHITE. Its god awful bright and gets dirty easily.
2. They dont have a "middle" size powerbook. They go from tiny 12 to large 15+. Where is the 14 ?
3. What the hell is the deal with the speakers being next to the keyboard ? I hate the way it looks and feels.
Of course there are a ton of other problems... like only have a single mouse button (I wouldnt be using OSX) etc etc that go into it. They are high quality, but they are geared towards "ooh shiney" types not power users. IBM's quality is the real key, if this company can keep it up they are golden. More likely they will drive it into the ground and try to profit from what the name used to mean.
Really ? What dell laptop is it that has an all aluminuim case ? Built in biometric security ? Nobody I have seen is worried about the loss of desktops, its all about the laptops. IBM's laptops are head and shoulders above other PC manufacturers, the only brand that comes close is the apple powerbook. Who the hell wants a white/silver laptop anyway ?
"prioritize athletics and athletes over academics."
How does a high school or the average university do this ? Please do explain since last I checked the honor students got more leeway WRT time off and shifting due dates on assignments to benefit their extra stuff (such as a science fair project or the like). I dont recall getting any special treatment as a 5 sport varsity athlete in high school. I know quite a few players from some decent sized universities and none of them get/got any favoritism.
"No we pay real salaries, but NOT bubble-level salaries."
Good to hear there are still some tech (personnel) friendly companies around not named google. Normally I would forward you a copy of my resume, but I dont qualify for anything "senior" level (only 3 years experience). If you need senior level people (5+ years) I can have a few people send you a copy of their resume. I know quite a few unemployed people (myself included) who are looking for something. Mostly from where I used to work. We all got laid off last summer when our jobs got sent over seas.
Its such a PITA being a tweener WRT systems administration. (not a beginner, not senior level yet.)
Yeah right. More like "when they deciede you make better insurgent fodder". No *IF* involved. I know quite a few people who were told they would have job X in the military and they have degree's for job X but job X is already filled. So you get stuck doing some crap you dont wanna do in some country on the otherside of the world.... all for some greasy oil pimp who chokes on pretzels and can't even read from a teleprompter.
That might have something to do with the fact that there were actually people driving around in LA, not towing a buggy with horses. Just a guess given some of the wonderfully insightful (for 1850) things that actually come out of red states.
Just a point, if you want somebody with senior level experience be prepared to pay them for it. I keep seeing jobs that require 8 years of experience in *nix listed on monster and they are only offering 35k-45k/year in major markets..... sorry but no. You can get a job as a retail manager for that much in a mid sized market and live at a much higher quality of life (even though you will hate your job).
The real problem with the IT market is that the people who are in charge are just business people. They dont understand or value computer people. They place false value on some crappy paper degree that some kid got at a factory for the broken spirited. (Yes thats all most schools do is pump out degree holders, qualified or not).
I dont know if your a guilty party or not but knowing as many people as I do that are mid-level or fringe senior level admins and/or coders I find it hard to believe anybody has had a problem finding people unless they are trying to screw their employee's/prospective employees.
I think the thing that really pisses me off is that they have a double standard. They will hire somebody from india with no real experience but they want a decade of experience from an american for the same job. Such a joke.
Sorry if that seemed like I was attacking you... nothing personal.
you know you have a good product when it does everything you say it will do ... and things bill gates and crew refuse to admit to.
... but its worth supporting.
I might just have to make a donation to wine. I dont use it
