By which point in time we could buy them from other countries who would be inticed to compete with canada on the importation of drugs. The entire problem with this comes down to three letters: FDA.
As long as agencies like that exist this will not be a free market because they drive up prices. The reason the drug companies are charging so much is because they can, most of the products are needed so its not like consumption is going to stop. Right now we are regulating everything in the wrong places (the system is setup to help the big companies) and ignoring where the assistance is needed. Its going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.
Still beats the shit out of:
"Bush rules world, passes more laws" or...

There are your american headlines. They will vary a little depending on what section of the shithole you live in.
I'll go a step farther and even let you know I am in one of the states listed:
Harris Teeter. Piggly Wiggly. Publix. Food Lion. Bi-Lo. Whole Foods. (organic) Earthfare. (organic) All within 5 minutes of each other. Including 2 Bi-lo's and 3 piggly wiggly's.
There are absolutely NO mom and pop places within 20 minutes of where I live. Although I happily avoid those cards as well.... (very happily since I have talked with one of the guys who came up with the idea, and a few people involved in harvesting the data for a few chains. Nasty/scary.)
Art is not a skill, but becoming great at something does require both skill and talent. You can be the most technically proficient person at whatever your doing but it doesnt make you a great artist, you have to have talent and passion to go along with it.
People who are technically sound design shit like the sybase banner ad at the top of this page, or are fill-in musicians at the local pub/club. Weather you classify them as artists or not is a personal choice. To me the word Art is used to describe something that inspires. Jimi Hendrix was an artist. He had talent. Van Gogh was an artist. He had talent. They both had vision and passion, Bob from marketing might be able to play "stairway to heaven" on his acoustic or come up with a logo for some OSS project, this does not make him an artist in my eyes.
Everybody has talent, that goes beyond training. Lance armstrong is the best athlete in the world right now not because of his training regimin but because of his talent AND his training regimin. Some people have better hand-eye skills than others. Some are good with language or visual arts. Some people just cant catch. You can teach them how, but they will never be as good as somebody who had more talent to start.
"I'll stick with FreeBSD until the day it dies (please no BSD dying jokes)"
Why ? (not inteded has a flame or anything, just curious.)
Gentoo's biggest weakness and its greatest strength are the same thing: Portage. Portage solves dependancies and installs packages (programs, libraries etc etc) however it compiles everything from source so it takes for_ever for large packages, especially on older/slower machines. If they added a suite of GUI tools, corporate backing, and came up with a way to install pre-compiled binaries as easily as non-pre-compiled binaries it would be the best distro, probably the most popular. As it stands it has no corporate support/backing, very few usable GUI tools and its a PITA to find pre-compiled stuff unless its a very widely used thing.
All that being said I use gentoo on anything thats a workstation because it takes care of the "dependancy hell" that I was suffering through with redhat. I use openBSD on my firewall and redhat on my fileserver.
If that statement was ignorant use something to back it up. The way the people of each of those races is treated in this country and regarded by the media and popular opinion proves my point. What do you have to dispute it ?
Intresting since his video said the exact opposite. Could it be that he is an asshole who lies through his teeth ? Perhaps even that he alone cannot accomplish shit and that he doesnt represent the majority of the islamic community ?
Osama is an asshole, I would beat the fucker with his dialisys machine and shove it up his ass and out the other end like a spit if I ever saw him. But if you think terrorism begins or ends with him you are smoking some serious shit. WE (you read that right) created this problem through our actions. Ever see a nutjob preaching on the corner in a city ? Everybody ignores him because his speech doesnt have any emotion or subject that effects the passer-bys, Osama has that emotion and that subject, Because we gave it to him. We put the taliban in power and then left afgahnistan, which we left again to fight a needless war against another asshole we put in power, yet we expect these people to love us ? We bomb them and expect a welcoming parade ? We force them out of there homes in favor of a more "american" acceptable culture (israel) and we expect smiles ? ARE YOU ON DRUGS ??? Imagine if somebody had been doing this shit to your culture, friends and family for centuries (this goes back to the crusades). Would you trust them ? We "liberated" both of these countries before, recently, neither time did it turn out beneficial to the citizens of those countries. What makes you think this is going to end any differently ?
"You seem to think that they have a problem with the recognition of Israel. That isn't so. Their problem is with its existence. Many Muslims and Arabs do not accept its existence. Killing all of the Jews to undo Israel isn't really an acceptable solution to make those Muslims and Arabs happy, is it?"
Well I could go on about us trying to kill all the arabs to solve the problem... but its a little late to put the lid on that jar (either one for that matter). We made a mistake, a mistake that we KEEP making over and over again.
"You are also mistaken if you believe that if the US wasn't involved in the area that there would be no conflict. Wahabism and extremism is spreading. It has a presence in America. It was only a question of time before we had to face the problem of Muslim extremists. It is better that we do it on our own terms to the greatest extent that we can."
We gave the problem roots through our actions. Terrorism will never stop, its a human rection to want to harm someone you perceived has harming you. You think this is going to end ? It's not. It's going to keep going and going and going. Hell it will even outlast america in all likelyhood.
I'll leave you with this - Bin laden by himself is no more dangerous than any other nutjob, people like Bush give him a cause. They are the ones that recruit for Bin laden. Kill one innocent person and their family, friends and neighbors are now potential enemies/terrorists. Bush doesnt understand this war, to date I have not seen a single person from ANY political party that has a grasp on this situation. This goes farther than a countries borders, farther than any army can reach. Everyone wants to be free, having a forgein government apoint your leaders is not freedom. Being bombed is not freedom. Holding fixed elections is not freedom.
I bet you we leave Iraq in worse shape than it was in when we got there.
If they are so in favor of israel then they can move their ass to israel. I dont give a shit about what 2% of this country thinks when its going to HARM the other 98% more than it helps.
"b) woken people up in the US and Europe that the area is also the "home" area of Christianity, and that letting people "own" the area with no thought of sharing it with others is probably a bad thing, from a cultural perspective."
They already are aware of it, why do you think they backed israel to begin with ? In this country (not sure of europe) being Jewish is closer to being white than being Arabic/Islamic. Hell to most people jews are no different than whites and arabs no different than blacks. Most people are ignorant.
Just for the record I never said that I supported the Islamic countries, but despite popular opinion I dont "have" to be on either side, I think they are both fucking wrong. Just plain fucked IMHO. We have no more bussiness liberating Iraq than Canada has Liberating us from the republicans.
"the religion (chrisianity) has become more civilized and toned down as well."
No, your just trained by the US media to not think of it has "christian" violence.
People in general are uncomfortable with outsiders, religion preys on this weakness and exploits it. Thats how most religion (Including chistianity) operates. Fear Fear Fear. (they just skip the U&D.)
Terrorists are an extreme branch of a religion and are no different than the assholes who shoot abortion doctors. Do not assume that most (or even a significant) portion of muslim's hate us because we are free or christian. They hate us because we have been trying to control them and bombing them, and other fucked up shit for the better part of a century. It is really that simple. If we would have left the middle east alone and not tried to force them to recognize israel and wouldnt have supported israel then we wouldnt have been in this mess to begin with. Add to that the fact that we have supported dictators like the taliban and hussien and you can see why they have legit problems with us. Of course it is easier for people to unburdon themselves and just place the blame on bullshit like "they hate us for our freedom".
Yes, it really is *THAT* simple. Leave them alone. (How to achieve it is quite a bit more complicated, especially with an oil pimp in office)
This sun has executives who write the most assinine things imaginable on their blogs and give press conferences where they display their reality distortion field to the public.
Just FYI Bill left during said exodus of a few years ago. (He was one of the people I was refering to). Bill has done many many more important things for computers than vi. (but yes it is a great accomplishment)
Yes there was a time when companies had Sun workstations. This was before the PC became commonplace. Since then Sun has been far above the average. (in terms of price)
I have never worked anywhere that had Sun workstations (besides Sun obviously). I have seen old old Sun boxes floating around, and occasionally seen a Sun (ws) system in a closet somplace being used as a server, but never a desktop being used as such.
They of course are going a long way towards fixing this by offering AMD solutions.
They are not smart enough to be Microsoft.
They are too small to be an HP or IBM.
They are too big and slow to be a Redhat.
They are not unique and creative enough to be Apple.
That was more or less wrong.
They are not martketing savvy enough to be MS.
Their top level management is not bussiness savvy enough to beat MS.
They dont have a unique enough goal to be apple. Prior to the mass exodus of a few years ago Sun had about the same amount of brain power as any other computer company. Brain power != # of employees.
The rest you got right. Sun's problem has always been an inferiority complex. It started at the top and is now deeply rooted inside the company, they wanted to do what MS did but more and differently. They however forgot that this all has to be done in baby steps, they skipped a few and fell flat on their face. Now they are fighting the wrong battle (vs MS) and are paying the price for neglecting the right battle for so long (vs Intel).
No. Because selling mainframes alone is not what sun is trying to do. I still think the parent post is wrong since he thinks in order to sell to bussiness's you need to sell to home users. Its the other way around. Once you start effectivly selling your desktops to bussiness's people will want the same thing at home. This is EXACTLY how MS came into power, and why it has stayed there. Schools and shops run MS so people run it at home.
Sun has not had a cost effective end user desktop. Ever. I know because I used to work for them. They have had plenty of high end machines. No company is going to buy a 2k computer for a secretary to play solitare on, the.com boom is over. Most companies buy cheap ass machines that they get sweet deals on because they also buy the back end machines from the same company (ie IBM, Compaq etc etc).
Their weakness was never competing against MS, it was competing against Intel.
No shit. This is slashdot, in order to have gets you must first find a woman willing to have sex. The inflatable doll your geometry club gave you in highschool doesnt count.
"Drugs are lucrative for those who sell them, but they have strong dependencies and ruin lives. They are dangerous for those who take them and for those who live around them."
So do many things.... Oil, phones, TV, fast food, perscription drugs, liquor, tobacco products. You name it. The vast majority of things in american culture are bad for you and on some level addictive yet they are not illegal. Mostly because the religious right doesnt have a problem with it/them.
Fighting for what you believe in is one thing. Throwing away your life for a cause that will never win is quite another.
The majority of people in this country believe that god or jesus is of more importance than freedom and jobs. Let them deal with the fallout from that decision. I have fought the good fight for the past three years. It accomplished nothing. They dont fucking listen, no matter how you put it.
I will not sacrifice myself to help people who wont help themselves. Or to further engorge the oil pimp's pocketbooks.
It's all grand and noble to suggest I stay and fight but the reality is most people dont fight (this probably includes you) they sit on their ass and once every four years they vote. Uninformed on most issues and ignoring anything that isn't on the boob-tube. The fact that 54 million people in this country (not the majority... but at least representative of it) voted because of gays, or "moral values" (what a crock of fucking shit.) instead of jobs, the enviroment, privacy or any one of a number of pressing issues tells me exactly where this country is headed. I do not have the money to prevent or in any way slow that decent.
Nor do I really feel the need to fight some fucking jihad that quite frankly shouldnt be occuring. FYI I'm not reffering to the war in iraq, rather the upcoming "holy war" that is going to take place in this country, where if you are not "moral" enough you will be treated like a second class citizen.
The religious right has hijacked this country. It's not possible to fight them because they have cash reserve's in the trillion's and people have been following their rhetoric for centuries.
They could tax the Sun.
