As previously covered at Slashdot here... The Federal Emergency Management Agency submitted comments to the FCC stating their desire to not see BPL go into widespread implementation. Apparently it interferes with high frequency radio transmissions which are used by FEMA and others (think HAM radio operators). You can see FEMA's comments and a FAQ on the objections (slanted towards the HAM radio operators) here
Forgot to add that in these post-9/11 times, it will be interesting to see who wins, Dept. of Homeland Security and their paranoia over infrastructure or the free-market wheelers and dealers at the FCC who think regulation is for the birds.
The 1x1 pixel makes it easier for them to match IP address, etc. to the phone # you submit. Matching server logs requires intelligence and time, items prob. in short supply in their marketing dept.
As many in this topic have pointed out, character development goes hand in hand with plot and general 'world' vision in creating a great series. Herbert's Dune series, Stephenson's Snow Crash, Gibson's various books, all of these display these elements.
I'm surprised no one has voted for Dan Simmons' Hyperion series. Although I must admit it starts off great with the first book and slides as you work your way to the fourth, it still makes an entertaining read. The first book in particular I thought was highly entertaining.
Of course, someone else could have already brought this up... scrolling through 900+ comments isn't something I have time for now.
FYI, the major ISP in the article that had their DNS servers attacked was Exodus/Cable&Wireless. They got hit Thursday morning I believe. The company responded reasonably well from what I heard, deploying a response team and countermeasures quickly. The attack didn't last too long, however; again, this is all based on second hand info.
Anyone tried to build a PVR for themselves with a PC? With as much equipment as I have around, I'd rather do that than shell out $300 and another $10+/month for a programming guide. I know I've heard of some software for windoze called snapstream, anyone have any personal use stories. What about something for slackware, or other M$ compatibile software?
Heck, there was an article about this in Business Week once if I remember correctly.
