Not everyone is capable of building their own computer, and when a large vendor like this gives Linux a shot, chances are that more people who would normally not adopt Linux will look towards it as a proper alternative instead of a geek system.

Your experiences with Dell and their hardware applies to Windows boxes as well usually, and Dell may influence other vendors to try Linux in the same way, thus the issues with support may get remedied in the long run as well.

  3. Before the Ubuntu announcement on Ubuntu On Dell After Four Months · · Score: 2, Insightful

You had to ask for Linux in a very different way. Now, they are offering a proper desktop alternative, which wasn't the case before, so when he says they've had Linux for 8+ years, it doesn't tell the whole story. There's a difference between offering Linux, under the table more or less, and offering it as an actual alternative to Windows when you're ordering your new laptop.

Nonetheless, kudos to Dell and here's to hoping more vendors pick up this trend.

To me, it seems the author is concerned about one thing: Web browsing. Problem is, off course, that most of the advantage from 3G comes from other services such as wathing video or video chat on the phone. In Norway, we can watch football (soccer) games over the phone, something the 3G phones handle a lot better than Edge ones. 3G network is put out there to give us these kinds of services. This article, on the other hand, only talks about TCP connections and HTTP. This isn't a case of Edge outperforming 3G in all aspects, just that it appears (he doesn't mention how he measures this) faster browsing regular HTML web pages.

IGN has a video from a Madden 08 event. Now, naturally, football players are present. By all means, that makes at least some sort of sense. However, this event is held in Hollywood, with almost nothing but actors and stuff present apart from the players themselves. IGN even interviews one of them who admits he doesn't even FOLLOW SPORTS!

Generating hype around your product appears to be more important than delivering on content. E3 appeared to be just that. I, personally, prefer like you suggest to simply download some trailers and preferrably trailers that show in-game footage and footage of someone playing the game, as well as downloading demos.

I won't cry much if E3 goes away and companies rely more on the internet like you suggest.

The publicity is aimed at people ready to buy a new computer/laptop, a group of people that may include, but not exclude, American Idol viewers. His speculation about publicity is more along the lines of Dell earning the good rep for actually selling a Linux system compared to other vendors, while really not following through on their word, not that the average Joe will give a crap.

And from a blog linked to from the linked article:

Update 07/11/07: The given components and prices on the 1420 Notebook have been updated. The price difference is now $25, in favor of the Ubuntu system. Note that the RAM Upgrade expires tomorrow for the 1420N. Among frequent price and component discrepancies, price fluctuations, and Windows favored promotions, Im not sure if Dell is serious about selling open-source [as Dell calls them] systems, rather than generating publicity. Considering that expected sales are at 1% of total systems shipped, and Microsoft could break Dell in half by increasing Windows License costs or decreasing co-marketing funds, I have no choice but to assume the latter.

If you dislike Microsoft due to illegal monopoly practices, that's one thing, but what is it with about hating Windows itself that makes it hypocritical to enjoy a 360? I think MS Office is a very good office suit that is certainly ahead of its competition, but using the same logic as before I should dislike that simply because I dislike Windows.
