  1. Sounds not so useful. on Faster P2P By Matching Similiar Files? · · Score: 0

Oh but if we only could! I'm sorry, sounds like someone is just imagining a 'what-if' scenario. This is not going to happen, unless, a new filetype is made specifically for it, and then you'd need a very specialized peer to peer program, and who knows how much extra work it's going to cost in terms of cpu/networking to determine if a file is similair or not. To me this just sounds stupid. Maybe it's just from waking up. They should work on optimising the 'pipes' or the 'tubes' to carry more data instead. It sounds like all the person thought of was hey, bit-torrent AND a stupid way to increase the number of people I can download from!

  2. Slashdot Linux anyone? on Dell Opens a Poll On Linux Options · · Score: 1
I just had a really stupid idea. I know it's silly, but here's a what if. What if a large part of the linux slashdot community decided to get together, roll a distro that was as idiot proof as one could make. I mean truly idiot proof. Targeted for users who don't know what they're doing. (everyone who knows what they're doing can change anything/everything anyway). So who wants to make /.nix? /inux? /.nux? slashdot/inux?...

Reason being as easy as I think linux distros are, I'm sure there are people who wouldn't be able to makes heads or tails of them. So to support them I'm guessing some videos would have to be placed right on the desktop that demonstrates basic usage. Have some more advanced documents packaged in there that are EASY to read. I think there really truly is a market for this, but I'm not sure if as great as the current distros are, if any of them are really targeted the truly new user?

The real benefit to the community however is going to be the backing of DELL to try and get some of these drivers made. The whole community benefits. Like most users are going to comment, it really doesn't matter what distro, as long as the devices work. However from Dell's point of view, it comes down to how many more support calls are there going to be because of this? They realize the market is there for Linux, they're just trying to test the waters before they jump in. I hope this works out well for everyone.

For example take a tube of balls, packed end to end. There is no more room for any of the balls, so the moment you put one in on one end, the other one immediatly pops out. Now, if that tube of balls was empty, then it would take n amount of time for that ball to roll the length of the tube. Is this the same conceptionally or is it different?

some distros really are cash strapped, and have their releases via bittorrents, and such. Sometimes providing xyz version of sourcecode for program abc really does become a problem. Sometimes it's bandwidth, sometimes it's organization (some distros might even have just a lone maintainer) etc... so there are reasons why the source isn't distributed always. (agreed, it would be possible to always package everything with soruce... but sometimes the end user doesn't want all that extra bloat on their download).

This is mostly a non-issue. Why would anyone be wanting the source-code specific from a distrobution based on debian/ubuntu? the binary packages havn't changed, all they really need to do is hunt down the version of the software they wanted the source from. This whole providing the source thing is a bunch of FUD from a small group of people trying to make things difficult for small time distros. Props to the ubuntu for offering to help out, and make the FUD go away.

Best analogy is Spock's gym locker room

Spock has say, 10 space lockers up and 20 space lockers accross

Spock can only put one thing in a locker, so Spock cant put his gym shorts in the same one as your shoes. But since Spock has lots of socks, He can pile them in, and take up two or three if neccessary.

Space is wasted if Spock uses a really big locker, but it's only holding a sock.

Now, you've got to record where all of this stuff is, or you will take forever to find that sock. (I guess the tricorders are broken) So Spock sets aside a locker to hold the clipboard with designations.

Now to bring this back into real life. There are a _lot_ of sectors on a disk. So keeping track of all of them starts requiring a substantial amount of resources. I imagine they are finding it easier to justify wasting space for small files in order to make it easier to keep track of them. Average file sizes are also going up, so it's not as big of a problem as it used to be either. It's all relative...
