have some questions for those who freak out about the prospect of human reproductive cloning. What's wrong with human reproductive cloning? I always hear about the nebulous heavy ethical problems but the problems are never articulated or discussed. I do understand that 95% of the people in the US say they wouldn never use reproductive cloning. If that is so, then what do they have to fear from the 5% who would?
My feelings exactly. Personally I think the idea of cloning myself to live in the next generation is facinating. My conciousness, or at least the basis for it, out there in the new world. I can't tell you how interested I would be to see how I-Clone would do growin up in a different environment.
The soul isn't much an issue for me, since I don't believe in one except as a metaphor of self, but to me having a clone would be just like having two souls. How cool is that?
So what word is he supposed to use? You have to call it something, and unfortunately it has to have the qualifier of either pro or anti attached. Just because he doesn't use the term you prefer doesn't mean it's rhetoric.
If a Pro-Choice (the term you were probably looking for) isn't a Pro-Abortionist then what is he/she? Yes abortion does have a negative context to it (as you demonstrated), but that's the definition of what we're talking about.
The parent post was very well said and unbiased IMO. I can see why you would draw the line at Brain Function, as well as why someone would earler draw it in the gestation period. As far as I'm concerned I would rather Err on the side of drawing the line too early than too late, because how can we really know? So far, we can't.
True, but the great thing about freedom of speech is you're allowed to blanket-label a population. I'd rather live in a nation where you're allowed to hate, than one that wouldn't let you. That said I'm allowed to dislike (hate is such a strong word) people who are anti-semetic. In that case I'm making a blanket-statment that I dislike people that hold that view, even though they may be upstanding humans in every other sense, I choose to judge people that way. Generalizations are just our way of simplifying the world.. if we were smarter we wouldn't have to, but we're not.
Um, this is one place where I don't think racism is an issue. Different races speak different languagues, there's nothing derogitory about that. Unless of course you consider non-native english speakers to be inferior (who's being racist now?). This is a well known fact, and when someone speaks that isn't a native english speaker they tend to sound differently.. it's called an accent. He could probably hear them when he walked by.
It's moving away at such a tiny amount that after 2000 years you wouldn't even be able to detect it with the naked eye. Plus our brain actually changes how we perceive the size of objects based on different queues. For example the moon seem much larger near the horizion because we use the surrounding objects to determine it's size, so it actually appears much larger. When it's just floating out in the sky we don't have much to compare it to, so even if it was smaller we probably wouldn't notice.
Isn't all travelling from point A to B? Plus it was most likely speaking of getting from one place to another in a straight line (e.g. not having to go around lakes).
Actually, inflation was originally proposed when Hubble discovered redshift in all but the closest galaxies. Einsteins theory of general relativity also predicted that the universe would be expanding, but Einstein didn't want to believe that, so he introduced the cosmological constant into his equations to keep everything stable.
I never understood the whole tinfoil hat thing.. I always used tinfoil when I wanted to increase signal on my TV. I guess it would stop my alpha, beta, and theta waves from getting out, but I always thought the point was to keep signals from getting in.
A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice, says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"
"The reason goes back to quantum mechanics and the uncertainty principle. For very brief periods of time, matter or energy can be created from "empty" space because no such thing as truly empty space exists. Hawking realized that if a particle/anti-particle pair came into existence near the event horizon of a black hole, one might fall into the hole before annihilating its anti-particle. The other particle could then escape the gravitational clutches of the black hole, appearing to an outside observer as radiation."
5. Our purpose in the Universe is to discern as much about it as possible before we die so as to become closer to by increasing our knowledge and understanding of His Creation.
Isn't this what got us into trouble in the first place? Ate the apple, gained knowledge, got busted. Built a tower to get closer to god, got busted. If I had my bible with me (don't usually bring it to work with me), I would also find several quotes that tell you specifically not to question how god put everything together.. that's the whole point of faith, to take his word for it.

It doesn't "know", it just happens. It knows because it's the one that's still alive and reproducing 10 generations later. Plus, all you need is a small population with a big enough advantage (e.g. a cannon in it's ass) to replace the existing 'inferior' population. Imagine if sapiens at one point gained a large enough jump in intelligence that they managed to wipe out competing species.. then that intelligent species (let's call them homo sapiens) would be all that is left. Oh wait...

"Does it make me stupid, or slow? I hardly doubt it." Well, you said so yourself. But yes, I agree with the general point.
I wonder if the solution that allows us to mitigate the bluring of the atmosphere for ground telescopes would help with imagery satelites.

Um, Clinton did get it.
Where can I get underwear made out of this stuff.

Not really, they just don't have an A recored set up for uruklink.net. The mx is as follows

dig mx uruklink.net

uruklink.net. 35931 IN MX 1 mail.uruklink.net.
mail.uruklink.net. 35931 IN A 62.32.60.16
So it just goes to mail.uruklink.net, you can traceroute to that.
