Slightly OT, but since you seem well versed, figured I'd ask:

In traning a cat, assuming water spreying is out of the question (too many electronics) what approach would you take?

Also, in getting a dog, do you have any suggestions given the following criteria:
    1) Must be primarily indoor - 2000 square feet of space
    2) Must be intelligent and easy to train
    3) Preferably short hair
    4) No chihuahua or daschund
    5) Must be computer friendly
    6) Needs to get along with cats

I tend to agree that cats are conditionable, but in some cases they are also capable of understanding language. Also, of connecting an A to a B - my cat figured out that the thing I hold in my hand is what makes the red dot she loves to chase, and will in fact, bring it to me when she wants to play. My impression is more that cats do not want to be subservient, and are more of a dominant attitude. Makes sense for a hunting species.

And that is assuming you have the instruments and instrument effects on a single channel per instrument, and vocals and vocal effects on a single channel per mic. Some studios prefer to split them into a pre effect channel for each instrument/mic, and a post effect channel, to record an unplugged or pure take, along with an effected take. That also assumes a basic drum mic set, and no stereo inputs.

The space required always seems insufficient when recording more than a single song, so we move each song to an archival machine when not working with it. Math just does not do justice to something as moody as a musician. 4 takes, ha ha ha...

  4. Re:NFS? on Solid-State Mini-ITX Linux Recording Studio HOWTO · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'd guess you've not worked with serious Studio recording. 1.5 GB is nothing during a single session, during which I for one don't want any hassles trying to transfer files. Once I get the artist warmed up, I don't stop until it's right. Any break in the continuity and it's start all over time.

A single session can last from 30 minutes to several hours, during which mutliple instruments are being recorded. No compression, the lag and/or loss is intolerable on the master recording. This means fast access to the media (or good buffering), plenty of RAM, and the ability to reshoot a sequence (rewrite).

Generally, no fiddling is done during the session on the recording, just tweaking on the input chain. I personally prefer retakes as seperate files, so they can be matched better on timing. Generally, given the option, I will have a complete passage rerecorded rather than just a few notes. (No, I do not work for the RIAA labels, how'd you guess?)

The number of writes pretty much requires a highly rewritable media, and I question the slower, more limited flash usefulness in the media segment. For a boot drive, they are probably ideal, boot the studio with clean settings every time. Only problem? Linux does not have the variety of tools we use.

The provision of enjoyment, or fun is frequently the object of a value exchange. In many cases, the entertainment is exchanged for a form of local currency. Establishments have been established which cater to this exchange of value, including but not limited to: bars (providers of liquid entertainment), exotic dance facilities (providing stimulating entertainment), theme parks (themed entertainment), television (mind numbing entertainment), end more.

This exchange of value can also involver other items or services. For example, children often exchange information on forms of entertainment (games) for the entertainment of shared enjoyment of those games. Maritial relationships generally involve and exchange of entertainment known as sex.

While strictly speaking, these are implied value exchanges, they are nonetheless trading.

Another example of a value exchange occurs regularly in all living humans. The exchange of gasses with expectation of receiving the value of continued survival is probably the single most common and most important value exchange perfromed worldwide.

The boats in question range from a 24 foot pontoon (~1500 pounds w/ 800 pound trailer) to 28 foot sail boat (~2000 pounds dry, 1500 pound water ballast, 800 pound trailer), so the towing capacity of a minivan is far from sufficient. You are correct, that puts me in a minority as far as towing is concerned.

Short of a minivan, the five passengers in question are US of Americans, thus big about the midriff. So a mid sized for five is crowded to the point of discomfort. This leaves two reasonable choices: minivan or SUV. This is often the case, especially in US of America.

The cargo capacity between the SUV I chose and the minivan is on par. So that was not a decision factor.

While I can't speak for anyone else's process, the SUV was the logical choice, given the constraints. And it's nice to be able to put my boat in without a paved ramp, or drive out to camp.

(Well, there goes the last of my geek points, I just admitted to doing activities in the actual Sun!)

I looked into the VW Jetta, but the prices are far too high new, and I was looking for reliable used.

Also, I frequently use the full capacity of the vehicle. The CF of tools often includes ladders, work horses, toolboxes, power tools, etc. That quickly adds up to a lot of CF.

Recreationally, four tackle boxes, a cooler, 8-10 fishing poles, personal gear, etc. adds up just as quickly.

I ended up with a 97 Izuzu Rodeo, slightly larger than the VW and runs on the far easier to find Unleaded. It has just the CF of cargo space I need, and seats 4-5 American sized adults comfortably. So I got exactly what I needed. The Cherokee was overly large, and anything in the Ford line read as gas guzzler.

I looked into Deisel, but the price per gallon is on par with Mid Grade unleaded, and the vehicles themselves are priced to eliminate any finanial advantage from the fuel economy. Unfortunate, but true.

Also, the Jetta is not too good for towing a boat up an inclined ramp.

The overall problem is not that people find that they need an SUV, but that they choose the biggest they can find, instead of tailoring to their needs and choosing a balance between need and big. Also, with the price of cars, the fuel efficiency can easily be lost in other costs, and us Ameries are driven by cost, doncha know!

So to summarize a long answer, yes, I looked into smaller, had a wagon that was not big enough. I use the full capacity often, almost daily. And yes, at the price point, efficiency, capacity, and performance, it is worth it to me.

Wonder how many others could answer like that, though?

As an SUV Owner, I feel someone needs to respond to the hype surrounding the choice to drive an SUV. While these statements may not apply to other SUV owners, they do apply to a significant percentage.

I was drining a fuel efficient compact car before the SUV. It was easy, just me to haul arround. Then things changed. I now frequently have from 2-4 people with me on any givin trip. With the exception of going to work and back (5 mi each way), I rarely have less than three people in the vehicle.

Add to that that I am normally carrying either tools and equipment, or other gear, and I have little choice in efficient vehicles. I can either drive the SUV with space for me, my passengers, and the concomittant gear, or we have to split and take three vehicles.

Also, I find the SUV is great for towing boats.

I would love to own something smaller for the work commute, and when I don't need the SUV, but given the seriously inflated rates for vehicles and insurance here, I cannot afford two vehicles, so I drive the one.

Not all SUV owners are in it for the 'I have a big car' syndrome, although I will agree that many are. Some of us actually need the size and capacity of an SUV, and cannot afford to have a second pollution machine for everyday commutes.

Give me an affordable alternative, and I'm on it like white on rice, as they say.

Using the Paralell port with an ADC is actually fairly easy. You just connect the input to a neutral grounded source to prevent circuit noise, feed the input from the analog waveform source (a calibrated RF generator works nicely) and adjust the capacitance to normalize the digital output. Use the multiplexer to allow more than one input to be sampled, and code the assembly to sample nibbles in a round robin based on the matched timing of the data strobe from the ADC. Using the paralell port results in stepping of the data, as the maximum resolution of the scope is limited by the 8 bits of the port. However, with multiplexing, some of the multiplexed channels can be used to widen the bit count to 16, 24, or 32. I never tried it above 32, as the 8086 I was using was unable to sample fast enough beyond that, even in assembly. Process the port input as a large integer and convert that to a pixel position (and numeric readout if desired) in simple integer to fixed point math.

The hardest part is eliminating the circuit noise for millivolt readings. In larger waveforms (5v and higher) the noise is mostly drowned, but at the millivolt range, any circuit noise, or any unmatched grounding, causes jitters in the waveform being read. Calibration to the range is essential for any serious reading.

And for fun, hook an unamplified output from a portable CD player to the scope, and viola, instant waveform display of the sound signal. Great way to relax on a lazy sunday, listen to and watch the music. Of course, this was in the pre winamp days, so it was a Walkman.
