Anyone, repeat, ANYONE who decides that the best course of recourse against possible attacks is to block an entire country is inept.
Ive already read many examples of this in previous comments marked as insightful?! From blocking entire subnets of DSL lines, to entire countries. Of course this works, but the solution requires as much thought as turning on a light bulb. If another country is overwhelming you in a territory, in this case the internet, then it should be taken as quite the wakeup call that a percieved solution is to BLACKLIST people from your content, guilty or not. And this is the best solution you can come up with? You call yourself a techie? You should be fired immediately, and without prejudice, from whatever job you have if it involves the responsibility of a computer environment that other people are using.
To use this solution to 'control' network traffic smacks of unimaginable incompetence at best, and a general attitude of no understanding what the hell is going on, at worst.
The 'friends' in this article are nothing but shadetree techies who think they have the slightest idea what they are doing because of a tool at their disposal. And most of the irresponsible key monkeys on this board dont see any problem with the initial pretense, and will ponder the question as if it is somehow legit.
However, just because you know how to use a hammer, doesnt mean every job or problem can be fixed with a hammer.
Sure, you say, whats the solution? If you arent part of the solution you are part of the problem, right? Well, frankly, I make my money by not being part of the problem, so why would I want to increase competition from those who cant figure it out for themselves? Thank goodness for the US education system! Its making me rich!
yes you can be wrong without being stupid. And you can be right without being smart. However, if you read an article and fail to understand(and it is a failure) the definition of a preposition, you are wrong, not stupid.
none of my statements were false. There was a gross misunderstanding of the facts, he was wrong, and he did attach his own mistrust of journalism to the story. Because I didnt hold his hand and be his mother does not mean Im being confrontational. As far as rhetorical, no it was a real question. perhaps I should have phrased it better; "Do you see the difference now that you realize you skipped over the word 'between'?"
And honestly, I have no need to back it up. I already know whats going on over trunk lines, and have no inclination to explain it to anyone who is too lazy to do their own research. I could care less if you believe me, it wont change whats going on in the world. Plus, I could aggregate any amount of links to prove any point I wanted, and so can you(you should know this by now). That is an excercise in futility
None of this changes the fact that sending email to your grandparents 2 states away does not add to traffic between countries.
You are wrong actually. You failed to realize what the overall point of this was, and would rather attach your own mistrust of journalism(not necessarily a bad thing) to it.
From TFA; Currently the amount of traffic flowing between nations is approximately one terabit per second
So yes, P2P network are what make up a majority of this traffic. It is a gross misunderstanding of the facts to think that when you send a picture file to your granparents 2 sates away, or have your home page defaulted to MSN, or browsing to sites that are located mainly in your country of origin, that it somehow adds to the traffic Between countries.
Do you see the difference? Im trying real hard not to be confrontational here...
I came her to do two things, chew bubble gum,and kick ass. And Im aaallll out of bubble gum
To this day, that is still a great movie. If you havent seen it go download a copy of "They Live". Rowdy roddy piper as an actor is just something you have to see for yourself! Horrible acting, but really a good storyline.
Society 'tells' people a bunch of things. What your neice needs to be tought is the ability to think for herself. Not someone elses list, as suggested here, of what she should be exposing herself to.
Maybe she would be happy being beautiful over intelligent. You cant tell someone what they need to do in order to make themselves happy. All you can do is tell them what would make YOU happy for them to do.
If she can take advantage of beauty, because yes, society places a value on it, then why is there anything wrong with using that tool for success? If as a beautiful woman, she can get an upper hand over a male, in a situation that is decided by another male, soley on the merits of her beauty, is that a negative for her or a negative for the shallow person who made the decision based on beauty alone? In the society you speak of 'telling' what a woman should be like, you seem to be ommiting the supposition that requires MEN to be the ones who think only about beauty and nothing else, and you are wondering what the problem is with women? Perhaps the question should be focused elsewhere...
So please, let the girl find out what makes her happy, not what everyone else idea of happy is.
Nowhere in that article did it say anything of the sort, that such a possibility had even been looked at. The basic point of that article was to advance a new type of local economy based on 'ecotourism' to support struggling ranchers. Not exactly sounding like a group of 'scientists', now capitalism is good for the planet?. Other than a large outdoor zoo, this has no scientific value whatsoever. The closest thing they could claim was that thousands of years ago these animals might have influenced the animals that are here right now. Hardly a groundbreaking endeavour.
why is it foolish, counter-productive to not take this at face value?
Are you going to give reasons to support your position of my 'childish' points? Or are you just going to stomp your feet in the corner and disagree just because you can? Are you trying to tell me that a deliberate attempt will always know every possible outcome of the invasive species, and always be successful?
Seriously, take your meaningless dribble elsewhere. Enough with the patting yourself on the back for having a moral concience.
Unless you are writing your own patch, you are ALWAYS playing by someone elses 'rules'. Actually, by someone elses 'make', but still. You have the absoulte positive option of playing by your own rules and writing it yourself. But again, you are too 'lazy' to actually write your own code and make the patch. no, you prefer someone else to do all that hard, boring, tedious work. Therefore accepting that their 'rules' are going to be of benefit to you.
You want to talk about silly? How about spewing the words out of your mouth because they sound good, not because you actually know what you are saying. "Playing by someone elses rules?"
What you MEANT to say, and Im going to have to say it because we will never get far enough through your self serving ego to hear you say it, is that you actually enjoy rationalizing reasons NOT to patch your box, because fear of change is a permanent part of human nature.
intolerance of ignornace is not 'exploding'. Its pointing out to you that 'lit ovens are hot, and they burn when you grab them'. Just because you are not a child, doesnt mean everything you know now is correct
Its not microsofts job to let you decide anything. Its microsofts job to make money. Windows update is propietary software, why would you think they would let you use another browser?
Its nice to see your own stupidity bite you in the ass though, and it will. Lets face it, you run windows because you dont know how to use anything else, but 'hate' the crappy software and expect everyone else to make it easier for you without actually lifting a finger yourself!
And the end result is, that you end up infecting some other poor schmuch because you didnt feel it offered you enough of a 'choice' on how to PROPERLY SECURE YOUR FUCKING SYSTEM when the next worm exploits a hole in hours, not days or weeks.!
So a bunch of people think its a good idea to 'bring back animals' that have been extinct for thousands of years in the environment.
A bad idea on so many levels, where to start?
First, there is no seperaton between man-made, and natural. One is a subset of the other. There is no 'special' status granted to humans that is 'above' the rest of nature. Obviously, these creatures were not able to be supported by the resources available to them, and then died off. So the only reason anyone would want to bring them back is either because; a) they think they know more about nature than nature does, or b) they are so selfish and wish to create whatever world around them that they like and consequences be damned!
Second, we cant even predict what will happen from a SMALL creature that has been indtroduced to an environment that it did not exist in before. For example, right now in chicagoland alone, there are numerous problems with these types of 'transplants'. One being a mollusk in the great lakes that has no natural predators that was probably brought in through the bilge tanks of large foreign ships. Second is the asian longhorn beetle that has decimated large parts of the cities tree population, and thrid is a fish that is creeping up the riverways to the great lakes that the Army corp of engineers is trying everything to keep it out of the great lakes, including ELECTRIFYING the rivers.
So now you tell me about some cute idea where you want to DELIBERATELY bring in a species that hasnt been there for thousands of years to let it breed?
Actually, geeks determine the sucess or failure of a product LONG before you even hear about it.
Lets see, my first MP3 is from 1997. Id bet that was years before you even HEARD of music files on a computer, although I could be wrong.

The unfortunate fact for you is that by the time you get to think your on the bleeding edge because you BOUGHT some product, the people that actually built the things they wanted have already been immersed in that world for many many years.
non-tech people keep forgetting that they are just equivalant to 'soccer-moms' who know about as much about as their SUV as you think you know about tech. Face it, until it gets to a critical mass, average people dont really care about it unless someone else is going to step up and package it in pretty colors for you to buy.
And thats why you arent rich, and someone else is. You keep buying the stuff that everyone else is stepping up to create, its just that simple.
Technological Darwinism = lots of money to be made:)
Its the lack of a magnetic field on Mars strong enough to deflect solar particles that will 'cook' the atmosphere away. More accurately, it will be blasted away with a planet-wide shotgun blast every second.
Let me get this straight. you are telling me that the guy who signed up for a job to kill people, is upset that he had to kill people?
Perhaps we should have better career counseling in the military, not weapons that make you 'feel better' about doing your job. You are pawns on someones chess board, and if YOUR feelings are what matter in a war, then you might be better suited for some sort of small militia. How can you talk about honor, and especially courage in that light? Does is sound like a rational idea to you that someone SHOULDNT feel all fucked up for shooting a child? Do you know why that child doesnt care as much about you as you pretend to care about him? He has probably watched your military bombs randomly kill most of his family and friends. All this 'weapon' does is put the same level of distance to the wielder as it does to drop bombs. What do you care right, you didnt get shot. But too bad for that kid whos intestines you roasted with the belt buckle fused to his skin. Im sure he wont shoot at you next time he sees you.
Its called war for a reason, its not pretty and for you to rationalise the use of this is not acceptable.
no oil to speak of? Maybe, but there sure is a hell of a need to get that oil pipeline through the country to get the oil from the caspian sea to market faster. As well as NG. The US Dept of Energy had predicted afghanitan to surpass venezuala in oil production by 2015. Just because its your opinion that there is no oil to speak of, doesnt mean it is a fact that there is no oil to speak of... you would do well to learn that distinction
"In January 1998, the Taliban signed an agreement that would allow a proposed 890-mile, $2-billion, 1.9-billion-cubic-feet-per-day natural gas pipeline project led by Unocal to proceed."
However, BP, aka BRITISH PETROLEUM had other ideas...
It's up to you, be ignorant and open your mouth without thinking, or make damn sure what your about to say is factual before you say it. Ive had it with this bullshit! All you do is spew out some sentence you heard someone else say(FOX news) and think because you saw it on T.V. it has some kind of authority.
Actually, in my state, Illinois. Paraphernalia is a class I misdemeanor, while the actual weed, hash, etc, is a class III misdemeanor. In other words, the drugs are just a step above a traffic ticket. But the bongs are just a step away from felony.
But then again, theres also a law on the books that says it illegal to tie my horse on the south side of a street on a sunday.
Actually, they did themselves one better and demonstrated that they are, in fact, not an evil company.
Instead of the links they were using before of;
http://google.com?url=http://websiteyouclicked.c om
Google is now using what seems to be a geographically-based IP to generate these 'links'.
In doing so, they not only eliminate a large amount of DNS traffic, they are also partitioning off the computation based on the area of the country you are searching from. FYI - In my location the IP is 64.233.167.104
So by using a browser that this exploit is not aimed at will infect part of the operating system your trying to get away from because everything is so integrated with no end user control.
How is this bad for firefox? If anything its a big black eye for MS and integrating IE into the OS.
Why bother with a virus when they already spam you with ads? I had a rather unpleasant experience with verizon not too long ago
I started recieving text messages to upgrade my service to another plan, almost on a daily basis. After awhile I responded to one of them stating that the attorney general of my state would be notified if any more unsolicited messages arrived. Within 10 seconds of sending the reply, my phone rang. It was verizon telling me that in my agreement was a clause allowing them to send 'account-related mesasges' and that I would have to opt-out of it. After ranting for awhile about the fact that I was actually being charged.10 for these texts, I made sure to get a credit on my bill for the messages. The guy sounded a bit taken back that I would ask for a refund of around a buck. However, the whole time I was getting more and more upset with the realization that when you have millions of customers, that can add up quickly. And since Id say only 10-20% would complain about it, thats still a healthy bottom line...
There is a MAJOR difference between private ownership, and publicly traded company.
They will have a board of directors to answer to, who in turn answer to the stockholders. Large amounts of these stockholders are financial institutions who pay attention to every little decision that a company makes.
Sure, they can do whatever thay want, but lets hope "whatever" is a decision not made in an arbitrary light, but one arrived at after debate about the potentional positive AND negative impacts said decision would produce...
And since we are talking about capitalism, now that they have public investors to answer to, the shining light of competition comes into play. To produce returns for their investors at a certain rate, they will have to either equal or outperform their peers. I would speculate that the decision to do this by google relates directly to the bottom line. Nothing about good or evil, hypocracy or truth, just $$$.
So while your attitude of "who cares" I can appreciate, I think your reasoning of arriving at that point took a detour away from the facts.

A disallowed directory called 911/iraq ?
Peruse the rest, maybe you will notice that almost EVERY single directory to not be browsed by search crawlers has an/iraq conterpart to it...

Ill admit, I didnt RTFA. But the general thing Im reading here is based on an AWEFUL lot of assumptions, most of which arent true.
Terraforming another plante, sounds good on paper. But can we please pick a planet that is shielded from the solar wind so all the 'efforts' arent wasted away, or in this case blown away into outer space.
Without an active magnetic field, the upper atmosphere of mars would be directly exposed to solar flares, radiation storms, etc. Which is why there is no atmosphere there now. Nothing to do with water on the surface, it just sublimates and gets ejected off the planet anyway if there was water.
So until someone figures out a way to start a regenerating dynamo half the size of the planet mars INSIDE the planet mars, can we stop with the mental masturbation?
"What he's doing is enforcing his concept of decency on libraries around the state of Kansas, and that's not his business," said Dick Kurtenbach, executive director of the ACLU in Kansas and western Missouri.
Now, can you please tell me which word in that sentence has anything to do with the RIAA? Because the thing I see as more important is; "enforcing HIS concept of decency...". But thats the prevailing attitude in that area of the country, which is why youll see people on this very board who say they are from kansas and see no problem with this whatsoever.
The ACLU has a beef with the AG of kansas, based on the decisions that office made on its own. At no point, ever, did this article give the inflection that the ACLU is defending the RIAA.
Your logic and reasoning skills need some brushing up. All birds with feathers are not chickens, yet all chickens have feathers. Right now, your argument is like pointing at an ostrich and telling us to look at the chicken.
Uh-oh, wait... because Im objecting to your original premise, I guess I must be for the RIAA too...
This is useless. Instead of looking at this as some kind of great idea, can we all realize its more telling of the shortcomings of FM radio. If I want to know the name of a song thats on my radio, I look down at the display and it tells me. Yes, its satradio. But I havent listened to FM since the day I bought it and realized Im not missing a damn thing but ultra-edited music and stations that cut out saying the name of a song because its
To me the bigger story is the fact that FM is pretty much the oldest technology around still being used, ok AM, but theres not much music around on that anymore. In fact FM is such an old technology, things like your PHONE can now be used to supplement it...ummm what?
Does this count the police cruisers I see running plates on their laptop when they are stopped at an intersection? When the laws, as written, apply to everyone, Ill follow them, until then stick it up your ass.
Also, if your state has a seatbelt law, take a look at the next officer driving by to see if hes wearing his. Its even better with a camera, and he might even wonder why your pointing your phone at him.

Jeff Gannon called, he wants his fake name back.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/robots.txt A disallowed directory called 911/iraq ? Peruse the rest, maybe you will notice that almost EVERY single directory to not be browsed by search crawlers has an /iraq conterpart to it...
OSI?
