I seem to remember back when OS X Server was announced in 1999, the LinuxPPC page had a fairly negative response.

Well, because it comes from a company with presumably more engineering resources than LinuxPPC. What do you think companies are more likely to support natively, OS X or LinuxPPC?

MacNN has an interesting article featuring a talk with Jeff Carr from LinuxPPC, in which he once again slams OS X needlessly ("Mac OS X is very limited regarding hardware support" - well, duh, it's not actually out yet, but I bet it'll support USB and FireWire sooner than LinuxPPC does natively), claiming Apple can't win against a free OS and that they should throw out the Mach kernel. But OS X is built on a free OS, and BSD appears (have to be careful here) to have an easier upgrade path, something Apple is finally interested in - the Software Update feature of OS 9 took way too long to make it into the system, IMHO.

LinuxPPC has been fairly critical of OS X and Darwin for some time now. Why don't they cooperate instead? Then, everybody wins.

They show Linux at a 4% desktop share, trailing MacOS's 5%. They also say that the Linux share comes out to around 3.9 million users. This would make the MacOS share roughly 4.9 million (just under a million per percentage point). Does that seem low to anybody else, considering that Apple sold 1.3 million machines last quarter alone? I would think Apple's shipment share in 1999 would have been at least 5-6 million, including sales of Mac OS 8.6 and 9 to users who didn't necessarily buy a new machine.

If I have to read through one more stupid auction describing the "next big this-or-that" domain name for sale I'll have to beat somebody with a stick. Makes it a real pain in the ass to serach for old NeXT hardware, I can tell you.

Of course, maybe I'm bitter because some loser picked "simple2use.com" (simple2use@earthlink.net being my old email address for over a year) before I got a chance to do so, then posted it for $1.5M *and* he had the nerve to post a note on the "site" saying nothing more than "I'm a squatter, buy my domain and make me rich cuz I'm a lam3r". Squatter bad. Squatter go away. Servo kill squatter.

Anyway, if you're going to do the auction thing, I would suggest 1) setting a reserve and prominently mentioning it in the posting, 2) make clear your requirements for authorizing the transfer, and 3) document why this is such a great name, rather than just saying "it's the next Yahoo!".

Well, Woz wouldn't have known about the new Apple site stuff unless he was briefed on the MacWorld Expo keynote (not impossible, but still pretty improbable). Here's his reaction to the speech (from the San Francisco Examiner):

Asked if he saw himself returning to the fold in Apple's Cupertino headquarters, Wozniak said, "Well, not really. But who knows?"

Whether or not he's referring to OS X or to the new site stuff is unclear. It should be noted that the reviews and cards sections are largely available for everybody; only the tools and certain customization sections of the cards require the Mac OS, unlike (for example) Intel's WebOutfitter service for P-IIIs, which requires both a P-III and Windows 98.

    1. Lucas isn't necessarily afraid of DVD. IIRC, he redid a scene from "American Graffiti" in the beginning where the sun is setting; the new version features a digitally-redone sky which apparently makes it look much better than the VHS version.

    2. A friend of mine received a VideoCD version of TPM for Christmas. I haven't seen it, but the point is clear: illegal copies already are out there.

    3. How hard is it to hook up a DV-converter to your VCR and digitally copy the TPM VHS tape? Apple sells just such a converter (from Sony) on their web site for turning your old movies into stuff you can edit with iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Maybe the VHS tape is copy-protected somehow with Macrovision or some other quality-degrading format.

    4. Having said this, the only way I would watch a pirated copy of TPM is on an Apple Cinema Display or something of that nature; anything else will be smaller than my 27" TV set (which is barely big enough for most DVDs anyway). Then there's the sound issue. My computer doesn't output AC-3 Dolby Digital sound, ergo I'm losing out on much of the joy of watching a DVD movie to begin with.
