I think the next frontier is building a house that is completely controlled by a central computer. The computer should be responsible for water, gas, and electricity. It should be able to prevent any damage or injury from all three. It should be able to run the house with the least amount of energy. There should be speakers and microphones in every room so just by sound the computer should be able to detect any problem. So how long before this happens?
If it was water than there should be evidence of life even if it is only bacterial life. Even if they only discover bacterial life than some of these religious nut will have some explaining to do. We have been looking for life outside of earth for a long time now without success. I think if they do not discover some signs of either living life or past life than the whole mission will be a failure. It is just like looking for water on your property, one does not care how fancy or technological the equipment is, one only cares if they have found water. So I am hoping they discover signs of life soon.
I do not know much about bitcoins but I do know about the someone said they hacked into Romney tax returns. They wanted to be paid in bitcoins. So is bitcoins going to make it easier to kidnap people? The people must have thought that they could get a million dollars without being caught. It would be much easier than having a pick up place for a million dollars in cash since the serial numbers to that money could be scanned into a computer. So that cash would have to be sold to someone for a discount since that person would have to keep that money for a significant number of years before trying to use it. I do not like being able to send money to someone without knowing the name of that person. Of course Romney could have sent the money and the people could have still released the returns because I do not see anyway the hackers could have guaranteed it.
I do not like to eat meat. If I am at a party I will try my best to determine if the dish has meat in it and if I can see meat, I will not eat it but if I do not see meat and take the dish I will not throw it away. I see no purpose to that. It is the same with leather. I do believe that leather is the only reason someone kills a cow as the main reason is the meat. For me the question is do I think their skin should go to waste rather than me using it? I have trouble with that since they will make money by making leather so it will reduce the price of the meat. So by buying the leather I am making it easier for people to purchase meat and therefore I would be encouraging the killing of cows. But than I ask who is more humane because if no one ate cow meat than there would be a lot less cows in existence. So by not eating meat I would be encouraging a lot of cows not ever existing. The same thing can be said about humans, Is it better to not exist at all than it is to exist for a short time? There are other reason why I do not eat meat since it takes a lot more energy and resources to produce the meat than to produce the corn of other vegetables, it makes sense to me not to eat the meat so that those resources could be used to feed starving people on this planet.
I downloaded and executed a program called windows web commander while running MSE. It gave me no warning. I had to restore the computer to a date before downloading to get it to work again. It started with a pop up message stating I had a virus. The program asked for money to remove the virus which was essentially itself.
I occasionally run a game called webkinz for my nephew, It use to run fine on both firefox and chrome but now neither one of them will run it satisfactory. IE8 will. It is the same for a couple of very old dos games I have. I did not play them on a windows xp system for about a year and when I decided to play them again, I discovered they would not run. I have a vista computer and I installed virtual box on it and installed xp on that without all the updates and found that the games did indeed work just fine. I do not like virtual box because it will not access my network and will not find a flash drive either so it is difficult to add programs unless I have a cd. I gave away a working lexmark printer because their is no driver for vista or 7. So if Microsoft wants me to upgrade just provide a working version of virtual box with 95, 98, me, xp so that no hardware or software are made useless. I just wish I could update browsers and operating systems without having to worry about either throwing away hardware or software.
I have read that the Sequoia supercomputer can do 2 Gigaflops per watt, I think this is at least an order of magnitude greater than any home computer. So when they get into the Exaflop range I would think that they would again be better by an order of magnitude. So that would mean they could do 2 Teraflops per watt. My question is what are they going to do with all this power? I would think that the federal government would get a Watson like computer for both the executive and legislative branches. I would think it would run a site where everyone could log on and express their views and get a response based on the beliefs of either the President or an individual congressman. Even today how many programs are based on a computer's output? I am sure that the CBO depends on computers to generate its reports. So how much longer do we rely on the middle man and just rely on the computers?
I have given up on free software. I have downloaded programs that are suppose to be free and after executing them they come up with a list of problems your computer has and then states that you will have to send them some money to correct them. It is like going to a doctor and having the doctor tell you that you are sick. The doctor says that even though you do not have any symptoms yet you must take this expensive medicine to prevent and cure your illness. Most of them are scams. I used Microsoft's Security Essential but it did not warn me when I downloaded the program "windows web commander". So the only time one test the software it fails, I would think it is mostly useless. I also blame my ISP because I would think that it would know most of the malware and not allow any of them to be downloaded or at least give a warning. I downloaded a screen saver and after every time I would shut down the screen saver, I would get a screen begging me to pay for it. After just a few times, I got so tired of their begging that I uninstalled the program. Free means free with no begging for money and the software must do all it is suppose to do without having to send them any money. Since that is not the definition of free, I will not bother to download any of them anymore.
So I guess that would mean a supercomputer like the latest IBM supercomputer would run in the average home on a wall socket. Now that would take a lot of improvement in the next 8 years.
If there is a shortage why are they still selling helium filled balloons at dollar tree for a dollar? All those balloons will eventually pop and the helium will be lost into outer space.
I can just see on January 8th someone coming in and asking "So what have you invented yet?" So with 864,000 petaflops this is all that you have come up with?
IBM's latest supercomputer does 2 gigaflops per watt. I wonder if this one does better. I really think this is the future of computing since they are capable of doing computing at a far less electrical cost than the average home computer. So any problem that requires a series amount of computing would be sent to a supercomputer with the home computer/phone required to just do trivial matters.
You are trying to destroy the value of WiFi. So you are saying that it is okay to listen to all the communications at every restaurant, hotel, rest area just because they have open WiFi so that anyone can use it. I have read that everyone should leave their WiFi system open as a courtesy so that people can make phone calls, download books while walking in front of your house. But if the government encourages people to listen in than I guess a large number of people will not have open WiFi systems just for that reason. I still suspect that if I kept an open WiFi system and someone downloaded a child pornography file that I would be suspect of possessing that file so for that reason I do not have an open WiFi.
So lets look at jobs. How many jobs were created from 1/1/90 to 1/1/00? 22 million. How many jobs were created from 1/1/00 to 1/1/10? less than 0. How many jobs were created from 1/1/10 to the present day? 4.5 million. Even though the republicans gave away trillions of dollars to the rich and started two wars they could not conclude they had 0 jobs growth. Obama and Clinton started and concluded wars during their time with no loss of American life. Bush started two wars with over 5,000 American deaths and over a trillion dollars and failed to conclude either one. Bush had more time in Afghanistan to conclude that war than the amount of time Obama will have if reelected and his plan is carried out. Now lets talk about debt. Bush was responsible for over 6 trillion dollars in debt. When he left office the country was in the worst recession since the depression. So how much of Obama debt can the directly attributed to Bush. First he has to pay the interest for the 6 trillion dollars of Bush's debt. Second he has to pay for the unemployment insurance caused by Bush. Third he has to conclude both of Bush's wars. Fourth he has to do this with reduced income caused by Bush's great recession. Now lets go back 50 years to 1962. How many Americans have lost their life in foreign wars under republicans and how many under democrats? The republicans are so far in front of the democrats and yet you want another republican to be president.(hint over 16,000 dead in 1969 under Nixon).
There are states that do not have sales tax. I believe that Alaska is one of them. So what would happen if someone in Alaska would purchase an item and than give that item to someone in a state that did have a sales tax? With automobiles it is easy since that automobile must be registered in the state of residency the sales tax is collected when registering that automobile. I recently purchased a used car and I had to pay sales tax on it. I payed $10,000 for a car that was sold for $16,000 so the state received $960 from the original owner plus $600 from me. Depending on how many times the car is sold the state could get more from taxes than the original sales price. Now with items that are not registered, if someone would purchase a expensive television who lived in Alaska and had it shipped to someone in Michigan, that someone would not have to pay the 6% sales tax in Michigan. So someone could establish in Alaska to purchase expensive items in Alaska and have them shipped to an address in Michigan and charge 2% and both would profit from it. What is needed is a common sales tax for every state.
I was driving a 10 year old Geo Metro. I was having steering problems so I took it to a mechanic. After putting the car on a lift, I was informed that the car should be sold for scrap since the frame was so rusted that the passenger front wheel had broken off. So if they could make a frame that did not have any problems with rust, I would be very interested in it. Twice a year I had the oil changed and not 6 months before it broke, I had the muffler system replaced. Not one of those mechanic said anything about rust on the frame.
I thought there would at least mention the big bang theory. Did the big bang create the universe? Was it the very first time and only time that the big bang occurred? Will the universe end in the big chill? Will the universe use up all the energy in existence? What is time and did it exist before the big bang? Will time ever cease to exist? As for death, there was an atheist who ask if anyone was worried about the 13 billion years prior to there existence so why worry about the time after death? I did not have anything to worry with during those times but somehow I received the gift of life. I would think that if there is any intelligence behind my receiving the gift of life it would not be so cruel to allow any life to cease to exit, And if there was no intelligence behind existence than how did such a complicated universe come into existence? Stephen Hawking writes that the force of gravity created everything out of nothing but if there was nothing how did the force of gravity exist?
Creationism makes god out to be an idiot. I would think that an all powerful god could have made humans totally different than germs, bacteria, and virus so that none of them would have any effect on humans. I blame evolution and our similarities to lower forms of life for most of our illness. I blame contagious illness for most of our hostility toward our fellow humans. So while evolution is true it is the root of all evil.
I do not believe a 60 year old can feel like one did when they were 20. Everything deteriorates unless your are somehow a super human. Eyesight, hearing, amount of hair will all be less than one had at 20. Muscle and joint pains will be much worse. Gray hair will for most be there. Your teeth will not be as good simply because they will have 40 more years of wear and tear. Your stomach will not tolerate the foods one could eat when 20. But even if one could restore their health to a 20 year old, live would still be boring when one finds out that there are no more problems that they can solve. I believe that in less that 20 years living will be so easy that most will find it boring because robots will do most if not all of our manual labor. Computer will do most if not all of our thinking.
IBM's Sequoia supercomputer has recently been declared the world's fastest supercomputer. It also seems to be energy efficient. The article stated it does 2 giga flops per watt. I would think that is better that any home or business computer. IBM is the main backer of World Community Grid and its computers are generating over 50,000 results a day. I would think that the cost of electricity for those results would be much greater than the cost if the results were generated on the Sequoia supercomputer. This is especially true since the results must be verified which means they are compared to another computer's results. This means each result is usually done by at least two computers doubling the cost for each result. Yet there are three members of wcg that produce over 20,000 results each day. If cloud computing is so great, I would think that one of the first things to end would be distributed computing because that seem to me to be the exact opposite of cloud computing.
Why can't we control intersections this way? Every car going through a intersection would be given a certain speed to avoid being in the intersection at the same time as another car. If we could get rid of traffic lights, stop signs and yield signs, I am sure we could increase gas mileage enough to pay for the system. I would also like to see every car being mandated that it has both a gps system and cruise control. If they were integrated with the accelerating pedal so that no car would be able to speed, I would think there would be less accidents.
I do not know about other hospital but I do know about my local hospital. It is now in the midst of a major construction program. They are spending around 10 million dollars so that they can move the entrance from the south side to the north side. Just a couple of years ago they had a major addition to it. So I can not see that it is anywhere close to being closed or broke.
I say first thing first. I think we need to develop underground buildings first. I think this country should look more like it did in the year 1500 than it does today. If we build all of our building and roadways underground we would need about half the energy we use today. With everyone living underground all property would go back to public ownership. One could get back to the surface and walk for miles without trespassing or crossing a road. Everyone would be far more secure from weather and other humans that we are today. This security would make almost everyone a lot more empathic that we are today. If everyone lived a thousand feet underground, it would be difficult to even use nuclear weapons on this country. Major disasters of today would not have much of an impact on the underground buildings. Hurricane and tornadoes and even tidal waves would have little concern for the underground inhabitants. Even earthquakes would have a lot less effect on people. It maybe it is way too expensive today but in the near future with robots and new automatic means of construction it might just be affordable.
After working a lot of 12 hr days my son-in-law was laid off for a little over a month. During that time my granddaughters came to visit me. One of them got sick and I took her to a doctor. The bill was over $120 but her dad had medical insurance through his job but unfortunately his lay off time was just long enough to cut off his insurance. So I often wonder when a corporation makes it employees work 12 hour days as I believe there often is another reason for it. Like building up inventory so they can lay people off and decrease their medical insurance or in preparation for a strike so that they can get through it without much loss of sales. Besides one works to live not the other way that is live to work.
I do volunteer work for World Community Grid. IBM started this project to help in the cure of several diseases. They so far do not have a project which uses Cuda or a GPU. They are doing a huge number of results lately(about 140,000 a day). I would think that they would have the incentive to do that work in the most efficient manner. But since there is still no use for the GPU, I guess IBM does not consider it cost worthy yet. Now for a little bragging on my part. One can join a team and I have joined the slashdot user team which is about 27th position in results returned. Well I am number one in results returned in that team. I would think that slashdot user would have better equipment than the average user so being number one in results returned for that team means a lot to me anyway.

I would guess you live in Tucson, Arizona. It is Arizona's second largest city by population and has around 540,000 people in it.
