Well even carbon fiber products like Kevlar are still higher than crap. If you want it really strong you have to put the panel in a press mold and then into an autoclave for hours.
We do need the car companies to start spending some money on how to press out lightweight and strong structures that can be made as cheap as steel. It's simple power to weight. The vehicles and the batteries need to get lighter, if we are going to see a bunch of battery powered cars everywhere or maybe the highway department could have a mass project to put induction wires under the roads. The battery could be a lot lighter then.
But like everyone else has said, not much of this nano stuff has made it to market except in some high priced bullet resistant vest that may or may not be stronger than Kevlar or Spectra. If we could just make a long enough nano fiber, then it can be woven and made into things. An inch or two is all the length I have seen for sale and you can't buy a lot for any price.
Yeah but you don't want to. I reckon they found other stuff in writing that he was planning to use some of this knowledge for a holy war or something. So he wrote that down and that is really what got him in trouble. So, non story.
Arresting people for potential crimes? I guess I will go to jail for taking chemistry as either one could be made by a first year chemistry student easily. I bet a lot of people look at this stuff out of curiosity especially in the US. Until someone learns how to read minds, I think this one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of.
The guys parents got robbed too. I always wanted to go to the UK, thinking it was a cool place, but with lack of freedom of thought, I'm not going. In the US you would also have to catch him with the materials to make this stuff with. If their police would have waited, we may know if he was up to something. Now they might make a real killer out of this guy when he gets out. Stupid indeed.
No it aint funny but it's insightful. Maybe someone should watch the watchers. It's amazing you don't see more Rodney King stuff these days. Whoops I can get in trouble for posting this.
Have to agree. Sting? Google? They could have just told them. If the government wants to steal there money and ours, I would prefer plain old taxes. No speed traps, crazy fines in some cities that will get everyone about once a year, etc. Sometimes things get past the Mexican border too. Why should Google do their job anyhow?
I know Google has a lot of money, but a $500,000 fine is plain theft. Has the government stopped drugs coming in thru Mexico? Maybe they should be fined for that. It's all silly.
I even found one that would let you play music unless it was in mono if you copied it over yourself. Facebook, and email was there, but everything else you had to buy from them. Anymore there are more wifi hotspots than AT&T's 3G towers. So you have a choice but only from one garden to the next. At least Verizon allows sideloading on all of the Android devices that I have seen.
Comcast is probably the worst company ever but it's because the government lets them buy everything. A content provider ought to be separate from a data provider or there is one large conflict of interest but I guess it's OK to help out less than 1% of the population at the expense of the other 99.5% of US citizens.
So there you go the worst is the US government. They steal more than the rest put together.
You don't have a choice with AT&T or Verizon for that matter and then there is tethering. If we don't use their data we should have to pay for it and if we do we shouldn't have to pay for it twice. People say I don't want the government telling me what to do but they obviously need to tell every major provider what to do for billing you for stuff you don't use.
Well it would probably only be for very deep bunkers. OK put one higher up and give it a push. The moon would be the perfect place for something like this. A Mk82 with a laser JDAM kit would even be cheaper probably. Isn't China planning to go to the moon? Also, if we fought a worthy opponent GPS may not help us.
We really haven't had anyone capable of beating us in an all out war for over 60 years now even though we lost a few for political reasons, it wasn't because our military capability but more to do with rules of engagement. Now a country like China might could blind our GPS but that or the internet doesn't affect those Trident missiles. They use inertial guidance plus take star shots to get more accuracy than you might think. I heard it was within maybe 1000 meters but of course that is still top secret and with a 10 megaton device that's really close enough.
What GPS is for, is for unequal opponents to eliminate so much collateral damage or danger to the pilot and plane which costs more than any bomb it carries. If it has to go 20x faster, the rods of god can be made to go faster. The question is whether it would do any real penetration. I think we need to do some testing to find out. Maybe see if we can blow a guy off a camel from space without killing the camel as they seem to be worth more than people (sarcasm).....
Well it is a test plane. The next one will be larger. I think the Chinese are watching us since we launched first. We could just use this thing to put a bomb on every potential enemy satellite. It's currently large enough for that, but who cares if you bring all of it back. This thing could easily have a saw in the back. The next one will open from the front an swallow. It will be just like it disappeared. Maybe it has lasers?
Well, that would remove the money and the face to face that you would get. Poker is much different without a server. Real high rollers wouldn't go for that option.
I would hope that only Apple would have the back door to this one and just because they patent it doesn't mean they will use it. I think cell phones is where it would be applied and not laptops if applied though. You know they are one of the few manufactures with a proprietary cable and no HDMI out for such expensive devices rolling on a 30% profit margin while Foxconn only gets under 1% for actually building Apples mobile devices. Now we have lots of Android devices that Apple wont be capable of putting out of business by use of their patents.
Apple is way overpriced and now they have lost their best salesman. Many people will buy their Kindle Fire and say that's enough. $200 vs what could be $600 for an Apple which is better but Amazon along with the android market is catching up to Apple on the number and quality of apps. 30% margins in electronics is only for the wealthy if you ask me.
Cool a casino in space with rich Chinese funding trips to play "Texas Hold Em". Maybe they are getting into space tourism. I just wanna see the cards dealt.
I agree with what you say somewhat but one nuclear space weapon would take the whole thing out. So it doesn't seem like a threat to us, but hey the Chinese need to get ready to police the world now that we no longer can due to corporate welfare. Let them waste some time and money doing that AFAIC.
Actually, if you could gain even one second over your enemy there would be a reason. If it's in LEO then one of those things loaded up with tungsten rods would have a devastating conventional attack with just a slight push in the right direction. Kinetic energy weapons would work like that. Nukes, I don't see why they would really do that and either way it's not something that has to be manned.
I would also say that bringing foreign countries satellites back for inspection was why Nixon went with the shuttle which could never go high enough to fulfill that mission but now the Air Force has a relatively cheap space plane that could do that and bring it back. On a coolness scale from 1 to 10 it's an 11.
Why would it necessarily be there primary work device?
Yeah, that cold war thinking never goes away. Dang I miss it.
Well if they destroyed movies and song? So what. People might find other more productive ways to spend their time like posting on /.

Yeah that turns out to be the case that there was more to the story. Bummer.
Yeah but you don't want to. I reckon they found other stuff in writing that he was planning to use some of this knowledge for a holy war or something. So he wrote that down and that is really what got him in trouble. So, non story.
OK, when /. articles seem really stupid, there is more to it.
Well if they had more than what I first read then that would be different. Maybe I will go one day to the UK after all.

What the hell, if they really want to know why don't they just go to your FaceBook wall? Everything they need to know is there already.
No it aint funny but it's insightful. Maybe someone should watch the watchers. It's amazing you don't see more Rodney King stuff these days. Whoops I can get in trouble for posting this.
Yeah but rule did Google break? The person that put the add up getting around their system broke the rules.

AT&T will just not allow you to sideload off of Amazon unless Amazon gives them a kickback.

Right it's a dumb idea.

What if they unfurled a lightning machine or something to control the weather? Nah, I don't think so.
