I don't know about that? I don't see too many poor people saying "I real happy because I am poor". I seem happier when I have more money than less. I dunno about it buying happiness but you sure can't be too happy without certain things, like food water, shelter. All of that stuff costs money.
--not that this guy killed himself because he was unhappy--
You may have the answer in that statement somewhere. There may be other reasons for that. Those statistics just seem odd somehow to me.
Maybe it's also harder to kill yourself if you are poor, at least the easy way like a gun, or a bunch of dope. Maybe the very poor just don't have access to that. It would be interesting to know the reason, don't you think?
I really wonder why that is? I think it is because when your mind is in survival mode that you just don't have time to think about it. This rate should in theory go down in the US sooner or later.
That ain't what I meant, yeah we could be defeated eventually but not by someone taking us on head on. We could also give the store away by not fixing our infrastructure. This I believe is the real reason that the Romans, the Mayans, etc. went away. The 3rd Reich went away through force. For those that want to take credit like the US or Russia, I would think it was a joint effort. It basically took the entire world to beat them and if the whole world were against us maybe it would happen then as well.
We'll in theory a long wave system should be able to bounce off of a stealth planes innards. Short wave radar would not get past the outside. The problem with long wave radar is that you probably need 3 stations to triangulate in with some sort of least squares algorithm. I would say the race between stealth and SAM's would be like a race between materials science and computing power. Guess which won will eventually win?
--So far as I know, AA missiles are the end-all-be-all mostly in theory so far; in practice, even in more recent conflicts with fighter jets on both sides, most air fights tend to end in close-range dogfights using cannons mostly (well, unless you have a major generation gap - like a MiG-15 on one side and an F-16 on another).--
No the close range kills even going back to Vietnam, have been with heat seeking short range AA missiles like an AIM9. Cannon kills have been few in comparison.
--The machines and the technology are cool, but they can't occupy a territory, they can't impose their will on the occupants of a territory, and in fact, they lack any will to be imposed.--
Are you really sure about that? A robot army would really go over well with American public. We are right now trying like hell to build one. Whow too many Terminator movies.
--Unless you can win command of the sea you are going to have an awfully hard time defeating a Western military power.--
Don't forget the Air Force either. You have to command space too Mr. Navy man. I also think the parent has been think post WW2 with his comments, but I do feel that we could get some better deals on what we are buying. The Virginia class subs actually cost more than the Seawolf's that they replaced because they were supposed to be cheaper. A lot of this is because of so much sunk cost in development over many years. The B2 for instance wouldn't have cost so much if more would have been built. The B52 and B2 get all the press while the B1B delivers the most ordnance in the last two um colonial wars for lack of a better term.
--Something else to ponder: the Soviet Union never invested in the massive carriers, focusing rather heavily on fast, long-range submarines instead.--
They just didn't have the ability or the ports to compete with the US Navy. We have plenty of subs and are making 2 Virginia Block 2's per year. I predict no one will ever challenge the US in a set piece battle ever again. We lost one battle to the Germans in WW2, and we use the best testing method, combat.
Yeah a ballistic missile probably could before their systems would react. China is probably the only worry there though. I wouldn't think they would be irrelevant though because they are our big stick so to speak, and no one probably know where all of our subs are at.
--I very much doubt that maneouverability will become irrelevant.--
I know I have heard about this when missiles were new. This ain't the 50's and 60's. We had a mock dogfight with the Israelis. They had helmet mounted displays and won almost every engagement within visual range. Now we are retrofitting our own on every fighter we have. Any country can gain this at maybe $100,000+ per plane.
Have you seen the new helmet mounted displays that are on the Super Hornet now? The new AIM 9X missile has vectored thrust. So when it get's that close you can kill anything you can see. So at visual range everybody dies at the same rate. The thing is to know where they are at before they know where you are at and fire the first BVR. Stealth can help for this as can having longer range missiles than your enemy.
The thing to do is to have more planes that are cheaper in the mechanicals. Cheap electronics is everywhere.
--About 10% of the American population consists of people like me - we are wealthy enough to buy insurance, but we voluntarily choose NOT to buy insurance. There are a number of reasons for this. Mine is that I think insurance is a scam and it's cheaper for me to simply pay my ~$200 a year doctor visit.--
I hope you stay healthy.
-- The 50 million number comes a Census *mailin survey* which is completely unscientific and therefore invalid. The Congressional Budget Office says that any point-in-time 7% of Americans *temporarily* uninsured. In other words, between jobs. But they are not completely uninsured because they are protected by government unemployment benefits and COBRA.--
--3% == Americans who *want* health insurance but are not covered. A MINOR fix is needed not government monopoly takeover.--
I think you have your numbers wrong. Try 15% min. AND, it's not just about that. Try going from one employer to another with a pre-existing condition? Health care should not be tied to your boss and it should be affordable. To make that happen you have to insure the uninsured that use the emergency room for their primary care. You will probably say let them die. Go ahead tell 45 or 50 million people that?
So while you first statement has some merit, you second one came from misinformation.
--Besides what Korea is doing is no worse than what the non-government *private* Federal Reserve has been doing - printing bonds, giving these pieces of paper to companies, and then buying them back with dollars. In essence printing money. THAT'S going to cause far more harm (via devaluation of your savings by ~10% per year) than a few counterfeit notes.--
You are GD right about that Skippy. To pay off foreign investment (loans) by devaluing the dollar has always been a bad idea. Now the Euro will end up being the world's reserve currency and we will collapse just like the Soviet Union did by spending too much on guns and not enough on butter.
I'm sure that will happen if it passes at all, but anything just about would would be better than employer serfdom for medical insurance that we have now. And...it will get worse the uninsured just use the emergency room anytime they need help. Someone has to pay for that. Anyhow maybe this is off topic.
--How about disconnecting bloggers that criticize his health care reform?--
Even though I have points, I'm just going to reply. I f this is really true it IS bad of course, but couldn't we make an exception for this one. There is almost as much misinformation on this as there is global warming.
How right you are. For their needs maybe they couldn't tell the difference if you used another OS and applications on Linux. Just rename them. Like call firefox IE and so on. If you were real clever you could probably move the Icons too. I know I did this FireFox on Windows a few years back to stop spyware and it worked for a couple of years. Now they just go out on the net and run programs without permission. I can't just shut it all down either, the higher ups get mad at you for this as they are the worst offenders.
--The fact that we have a dedicated counterfeit currency and bank haxx0ring police force does indeed say something about our priorities; but the fact that a police force does exactly what it was set up to do isn't much of a demonstration in itself.--
I know that, but why again would this not be a high or even higher priority? The financial transactions have to work. Most money is just a stored number on a computer, without any physical currency. It's really a worse threat than counterfeiting. The local police have absolutely no idea how to deal with this, but now having them involved in other electronic crimes seems like overstepping what they are there for. Having them involved in copyright and trademark disputes and calling it crime seems a little bit more a job for the FBI.
Mr. Buffet also said by Euros when the dollar was being and still is being devalued to pay debt. He is just about always right. I knew the late 90's bubble when I said buy some 5 year CD's. Everyone said I was crazy too. No stocks are better, etc. At 120 times earnings without any potential I don't think so. 2.75% for CD's? Hell, WWII war bonds paid 3% which was considered incredibly low even at that time. It's probably about time to sell again though except for stocks that we'll, deal in commodities. Just a guess but, until there is an actual increase in GDP, we haven't seen everything yet. So if I was up ~41%, I would take cover for a while and count the winnings.
The first point I made, I think that decreasing interest rates so much doesn't inspire confidence in the US by the rest of the globe.
Do you think this was meant to be taken seriously? Hi yall, can I hep you with that here there computer? What's that there problem again?
Next time reply, instead of modding me down.
The exact same thing is happening here, but I really don't understand why unless it's those robo callers? Maybe there are some robo answers now? If you have this problem press 1 and so on, and then an automated answer for this fix is played press 2 to repeat, press 2 to repeat, by thank you for calling XM satellite radio. We really appreciate your business.
That's what I think it's coming to, except for billing of course.
I might have to get me one then. I always wanted and iPhone but no AT&T here but they are coming with pathetic speed. Even though they are promising 3G. Verizon had Al-tell send us a letter at first, but it appears that we are so rural we get stuck with AT&T instead.
--Good product design isn't just about a race to cram the most features in. Apple generally errs on the side of minimalism, which tends to annoy geeks who want their device to have everything and the kitchen sink.--
True, but they could have crammed wireless in a lot sooner. I kinda like some of the far east designs myself. I'm not saying that I don't agree with some things like that, and really Apple is not all that pricey anymore.
Since you seem to know a lot about Apple, would you happen to know how to completely switch a Windows shop over especially on the server side? There are people that work here that would love to have Apples. Even the CAD people can run Windows on an Apple client for their special Windows only software. How do I get the basic, functionality of Back Office in particular? Anyone that has any Linux suggestions would be appreciated as well.
--Its like me claiming to be better than others because I have OCD--
Might as well, I don't see why not? I may have it too since I feel compelled to reply.
--Blinders to what? What is so dreadful out there?--
I think the answer is obvious. I don't worry about natural disasters or anything, just the ever increasing man made ones. I really think the human race as a whole will not survive the 21st century using exponential growth as an example. We have been coming along exponentially for a long time now. 1+1=2 2+2=4 4+4=8 etc. Now, the human capacity for war is undiminished. The usual reason for this is when too many people running things get greedy. They make it hard on the people. The people then put someone in power that promises them everything that they want in life. Just look at the 20th century as an example of this growth. I believe as many people were killed in that century, than were killed in all of recorded history before that. I have a dread of the whole thing and would like to help prevent it as would others. Of course I'm curious if I will live to see it, go fast, live long and prosper or whatever. I guess I think to much about the future.
Global War.
Global Warming.
Global Hunger.
Global Poverty.
All of this stuff is man made. If a man made it, can he not fix it? It's actually the slightly depressed that like to fix things. The really depressed have another story to tell, I guess.
Yeah everybody they had deals with tossed on them and made their own a little too much like another TIVO. I hope they do go after them, because they are certainly not trolls. They have valid patents, but these other companies are probably big enough to drive them to bankruptcy before they can collect at 5 years at least.
--I've known a lot of very happy smart people, I'm sure you do to.--
How many old, bold and full of mold smart ones? He'll I was happy too when I was you and didn't really know shit. Now the more I learn the less that I really want to know. I have truly almost seen and done everything except jail time.
It's funny how life experience changes your outlook. You WILL have to come to terms with it one way or another. Do you not care what the meaning of life is?
I guess you can still be smart and have the ability to put blinders on. So, maybe I take that little bit back maybe not. I haven't decided yet.
At that time to be fair they didn't have the quality either in some business applications like CAD. I still think they are just about as lame as M$. Do their IPODS even have wireless yet? NIX's are where the price and quality are what a man needs. Their shit may be designed here but it's still built in the same place that the other shit is. It's all a commodity now. So Apple fills a niche, M$ is just in a niche product now. To me what is desirable is how it works, not what it looks like. OSX is whole lot better now too because, it too now is a NIX OS.
I don't know about that? I don't see too many poor people saying "I real happy because I am poor". I seem happier when I have more money than less. I dunno about it buying happiness but you sure can't be too happy without certain things, like food water, shelter. All of that stuff costs money.
