All this recent talk about Ajax has me wondering, why is Slashdot essentially unchanged since 1999? Looks the basically the same and acts the same as when Rob wrote the first perl script. If AJAX is so great, why doesn't slashdot use it?
Seeing as how I had no idea how to pick a ring, I bought a $20 engagement ring for my wife. When I proposed I gave it to her and told her it was a symbol and that we could pick the ring of her choice for her. She refused and said she didn't want any other ring. She said that was the ring I gave to her and it was the most beautiful ring in the world.
No, no one would need to be killed, at least in the USA. The christian coalition and the "moral majority" would make sure any politician putting forth such an idea would be comitting political suicide. Its too bad the only rational beasts in this world are the dutch, and even they can't "legalize" drugs because of pressure from the US.
How many more people have to die, how many more drug lords need to come into power before people will realize that it is a never ending cycle. Legalize it, and put the billions of dollars spent on enforcement into education, save billions on crimals who are in jail for usage offenses, and tax the companies that produce it heavily to put even more money into education. Its the only solution that makes any sense at all.
so I can get rid of this shitty ass Telstra ADSL account that goes down every day, is restricted to 300 MB (whats the fuking point) or now 1 GB for $$ more... and requires a gay ass buggy as shit windows driver to "connect". What bullshit is this? what happened to the static IP I had in San Francisco? Australia sucks ass for broadband and its pissing me ofFF !@#@
I don't think Gates & co have a problem with "Open Source", but they have a problem with "Free software". Its important to Microsoft and its shareholders that they turn a profit. That means maintaining rights to their intellectual property and gaining revenue from software licences. Why not continue to do that, but include the source code with windows on the CD, and allow users, students, universities, etc to tinker at will (and learn a bit from the incredibly bright and talented engineers at MS)?
End users could care less, students and developers would be encouraged to tinker with windows more, and MS wouldn't lose any revenue. I for one would love to take a peak at the source for Flight Simulator 2002, or even 98 for that matter! Of course, Richard Stallman wouldn't approve because the license obviously wouldn't be GPL, but thats another issue...
Coming from the US I was agast to find that my ADSL provider here in OZ told me that my limit would be 300 mb. I said "300 mb a day?" and they replied, "no no mate, 300 mb per month"... whats the fucking point of broad band @#?$#!@ jeezus this country sucks ass for broad band. same goes for coffee!! they charge you each cup! no fucking refills! goddamn it! what is this flat white bullshit! no super big gulp or super size anything!@# they charge you for fucking ketchup at the fucking OPORTO chicken burger joint. They don't even give out napkins!
Programmers are almost as cheap here as they are in India, but they speak perfect english, they are laid back and easy to work with, and its a great place to visit if you need to!
Make sure you didn't sign a contract that gives your company all rights to your code when you took the job. Sometimes its in the fine print that anything related to work, whether developed on your own time or theirs, your equiptment or theirs, THEY OWN! If there is such a stipulation in your contract you may want to keep the project to yourself and quit your job ASAP!
In San Francisco, the center of the world by all reasonable counts we have 3 hours yet. The party has just begun... and in case you didn't know.. the west is the best. By FAR. And I've been around for sheezeee.. No place rules harder than this. But don't come... please no. Too many know already and itz gettin crowded.:) happy f-in new year. peace.
I don't understand why the gnome folks are doing this kind of development in C. KDE is written in C++ and therefore KDE is more object oriented, more robust, more maintainable, more extensible and a better choice for a desktop.
I need that! Does anyone know when/where/how I can get an X-Server with anti aliased fonts? Small font sizes in netscape are almost impossible to read.:(
Get a degree in computer science. While a degree does not a programmer make, it should certainly help give you the theoretical background you need to become a good programmer. Plus it will help you get a good job.
I have heard it argued by many bands that the record studios take virtually all profit from the sale of albums. In fact, most bands make most of their money performing concerts. A hugely successful band like Metalica eventually makes money from albums, because the record studios are forced into agreements by bands that are assured of sales. I would argue that even a sucessful band such as Metalica has been paid a trifling sum in comparison to the amount of money that they have generated, most of it squandered away by the record industry. Taking this into account, don't you think that cutting out the record industry and providing a direct link between artists and music is a good idea for bands? By increasing the amount of exposure to your music aren't you driving more people towards your real money maker, concerts?
Mr. Stallman, How do you feel about ASP model of software development and its affects on free software? For example, do you feel that hosted apps (such as yahoo maps, for example) should have GPL'd source code available?
Forte is the best Java IDE I've used, hands down. It is simply the best environment out there, its completely object oriented, and its a GREAT example of what java is capable of in terms of client side programming. I for one, can't wait to read the code. Great move sun.
I downloaded the demo and can't get it to run on my box. I have a voodoo2 and installed the drivers off linux.3dfx.com, but q3arena says glide.so not found or something like that. The test3dfx program works fine. Any advice? -doog
I have found this new release coupled with the new Sun/Inprise JDK is very usable. Java on linux is an option now, the blackdown JDK was so slow it was unusable. Now I can actually switch my development from NT. This is GREAT. I'm developing a small vertical app using java servlets. Under NT, I was looking at paying $2000 or more for the servlet runner, the JDBC driver, and SQL server. Now with Linux, Apache, Sun JDK, Jbuilder, JServ and MySql, I have everything I need, and its free. Way to go inprise.

Unfortunately and perhaps ironically, it may be that the rapid spread of HIV will devastate the population enough to save us.

Why don't they just put all the contestants in a Russian Sub instead?
