compared to 3D Studio Max, Lightwave, Truespace etc... Until Linux has a good 3D package no serious 3D Artist is going to switch. I wish SGI would make a port of Maya...
His argument seems to hinge on the fact that there are only so many programmers with the will and talent to produce quality open source software. The problem with this logic is that open source software itself actually CREATES more talented programmers because would be coders and programming students can learn by reading actual CODE! While I don't believe that ALL code should be open source, I do believe the operating system and core components should be, otherwise you end up with microserfs using the advantages that only they as the OS provider have to squash everyone else. An OS owned by the people is the only way to prevent that.
All one needs these days in a game machine is an emulator. The N64 emulator on Windows is SICK!!! The connectix playstation emulator on Mac should reinvigorate that platform... if Linux had a good Playstation and N64 emulator the problem of games on linux would be solved...
They came to my old company almost a year ago and demo'd a unit. It was pretty impressive... all they had were still images and they were interested in trading an animation for a unit. It works in windows only because the viewer application is written in MFC... Your head has to be in the right position in front of it. I think at that time they were going for about US 7000$, and they were marketing them mainly at casinos to be like a 3D video poker machine....
25% stake in a pretty fatty hardware company for a product that that didn't take that long to develop and wasn't that hard to do (they ported a bunch of source that was already written)sounds like a good business decision. I don't think this indicates that they will stop developing for the netwinder or for Linux in general, it just means that they want to be software and not a hardware company...
I have an NEC laptop that came with Win95 preinstalled. I never got a refund for Winblows (is 1.5 years too late?) but I'm wondering if the NEC laptops that VA-Research (or other linux vendors sell) originally ship to THEM with WinBlows on em??
MMX didn't do shit. Katmai new instructions won't either... I wish Intel would stop trying to build EVERYTHING into the cpu and let the companies that are experts at it, like TDFX or NVIDIA handle it via add on boards...
My company still uses NT on our web servers because MS IIS allows us to use server side Javascript through ASP. The reason we like to use Javascript instead of perl or something else is because we have an application that runs on the client AND the server using the SAME code base. If I could port the ASP functionality to something that would run on Apache and still be able to run the Server side Javascript I would. Can I ???
Some of you won't believe this...but there is more to life than your linux box. Most Universities require you to take classes in English, History, Philosophy, Speach, Languages etc... in order to graduate. This is called general education and in my opinion makes for a more informed, aware individual. You probably don't need a CS degree to be a good programmer, but you will probably be a better overall person (employee) with some sort of college degree.

The win3.1 machine was probably at 1200 baud and the 98 machine with a pocket rocket DSL modem... Way to fool em Bill!!

I'd drop as much money into that company as I could even though I know NOTHING about what the hell they are up to...

That seems REALLY expensive...even for a quad Zeon system...it better have 1/2 a terrabyte of storage at that price...
he knows the good side of the force... yet he resists...
