You'd have a point if Civ 2 was still *commercially* available. For OS X. I know you might find a copy on ebay, but that is not commercially available. I have tried Civ3 and I much prefer Civ2.

I am not sure, but I am guessing that /. is misrepresented on Alexa if they track using IE/spyware. How many serious geeks use IE and/or allow spyware on their computers? Anyone?

Worse than that - not only does one need to go through the trouble of downloading RealONE, what one gets with it is pop-ups and processes that run for no other reason than to remind you to buy their 'free' software and other 'news'. Like a previous post, I too am torn. Monopolies are bad, but Real is no good either.

I read the original article back in December, and, IIRC, what happened was that MS and IT were cooperating, with MS given pretty wide access to the IT stuff. When MS turned around and broke the cooperation and then implemented the stuff they had seen at IT, that's when IT sued MS. IIRC.

Does anyone know what they mean by this: "Pentium class is required for individualization"?
Does that mean that AMD/VIA is no-go? Or does it use the Intel CPU serial numbers? Or does it simply mean that WMP9 will run on nothing less than a Pentium?

The difference between the 386DX and SX was that the DX had an 16-bit data bus, whereas the difference between the 486DX and SX was the (intentionally) broken FPU IIRC. I am not sure if the 386 had an FPU as I remember there being a socket for an FPU on my mom's old M/B.

Or, maybe not if he wants to run Linux. There are only x86-compiled drivers for the nVidia chip. The iBook on the other hand is 500USD cheaper, and you can get drivers for the Radeon 7500 chip.

Gentoo's supposed to be pretty fast on a low-to-medium end iBook.

The head of Microsoft's China operations actually suggested the same thing to Microsoft - sell older versions for _alot_ cheaper. Alot cheaper is often what to what people in the developing world be willing, and able, to pay for software. She figured it would create mind-space and make people used to buying legit copies. Yeah, she was fired. I have seen alot of NES-compatible game systems sold in down-scale Chinese apartment stores, and Nintendo probably figures that there is a buck to be made by going in and competing with these fly-by-night manufacturers. Makes sense to me.
