  1. Mac Software on Best Setup for Mapping in Undeveloped Countries? · · Score: 2, Informative

I've had a very good experience with MacGPS Pro from James Associates. It's reasonably priced ($40) and you can even find free maps and such. I used it in combination with a Garmin eTrex on a recent trip to the Okavango Delta (Botswana) and it worked just fine. No, I do not work for either company.

If you want to use a mouse (you know, that curved thingy with a roller ball on your desk), just highlight and drag-it even works when you drag to the terminal.

  3. Re:The buyer's location has ceased to matter on iTunes(UK) Targeted By The Office of Fair Trading · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have a feeling the reason behind Apple's doing this (requiring stores to only sell to their local country) is an attempt to avoid running afoul of local laws regarding IP. The original rights holders do get compensated, but oftentimes in a large corporation (like WB, for instance) individual divisions compete against each other in order to avoid being prosecuted for antitrust (this is why antitrust came about in the first place-railroads would buy up all of their suppliers and then trade amonst themselves at greatly reduced prices). This has happened at Sony, where the digital media arm makes decisions that enable people to pirate stuff from the music arm.

  4. Re: Not IOS though on What Would You Do With a 92 TBps Router? · · Score: 2, Informative

An article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday [wsj.com] mentioned that they were getting rid of IOS in favor of something more "user-friendly." Their big competition is Juniper and, in order to sell more boxen (routen?) they have had to answer to complaints about IOS. Also, the article mentioned that IOS wass getting to be around 15e6 lines of code, and was impossible to maintain. Yay for a free market where consumers can actually vote with thier wallet and compaines have to respond or someone else will.

  5. Re:Trust Me. on Phoenix Sounds Death Knell for BIOS · · Score: 5, Interesting

I would argue the opposite. Look at the iPod. It's not obvious how to copy music to multiple song libraries, but it's not overly difficult either. Apple tends to place much more responsibility onto the end user. Even the iTunes Music Store follows this philosophy. The AAC's themselves are restricted to a certain number of authorized computers, but you can burn them to unlimited CDs. I feel that this strategy will continue with their hardware-some restrictions, but with most of the "trust" in trusted computing being placed in the users themselves.

  6. Re:.Mac, iBlog on How to Set Up a Gift Website? · · Score: 1

If you're running Panther (10.3.x), be sure to get the updated version of iBlog (1.3.4 as of post time). Earlier versions have a bug that prevents publishing to .Mac.
