Though it is interesting that they picked the name "Smeagol" for the OS revision that allows thee 970 to be compatible, because the whole idea behind HT is to allow all the chips to speak the same language so nothing has to be translated from chip to chip. So Apple is trying to prove to the music companies that it's software is trustworthy. Musci companies notice that anyone can stream tunes ffrom anywhere with iTunes. They also notice that within two weeks someone has come up with a way to take those streamed music feeds and convert them into MP3/s. They get pissed. Apple gets egg on their faces. This program is counterproductive. If we want to convince music companies that the computer is a viable distribution model and that we want those distributed files fairly unfettered by copy protection, than this goes against all that. It makes Apple look bad, and we're at the point where Apple is really our best hope for a scheme which we like. This needs to catch on, or else something worse (Microsoft) comes along and takes over another branch of the internet. Sad thing is, I like the idea of being able to stream across the internet. Leave it to script kiddies to ruin it for everyone.

That just doesn't make sense, particularly when they are not first to market OR priced competitively. When I can go out and get it for free, you have to be at least somewhat competitive. I'm sorry, but $1 per song just isn't worth it. Tell you what, just set up a pay-pal account for each artist and I will donate $.10 every tie I download a track. That's how much they'll probably end up getting with this scheme.

This means that the average CD will still cost $10-$12 to download, and you don't get a CD, a jewel case, or liner notes. Legal music swapping will not catch on until it is significantly cheaper, like around $.25 or less. THAT is a good business model. I assume that this hinges on the record labels and that Apple is just performing as the middle man with these prices. I, for one, will still use Aquisition until the record companies stop gouging me.

The reality is that this technology will restrict those who aren't computer savvy. The result still will be that the computer becomes far less egalitarian. And this is the real problem. This is a very basic argument about who controls information, who creates it and who uses it. While there will be exceptions, with Palladium shifts this troika decidedly towards big business and away from consumers. That is scary, and to my mind, downright Orwellian.

The fact that there's only a small decimal increase doesn't change the fact that there were significant improvements in functionality and applications. M$ would have charged $500 for it. Second, you assertion that the next upgrade will be $700 is utter bullshit. First I assume that you are talking about an unlimited licesne. What does M$ charge for that? Oh, right, they don't even offer that. The next upgrade will be 10.3 and I guarantee you it will be free. If you look at previous Apple OS release schedules you will discover that the time frame of paid/free releases hasn't changed that much. If it has changed a little, it is only because the improved architecture allows them to program more quickly. Unless you can show me a link that supports your claims, I'll chalk it up to blatant bitching for the sake of bitching. OSX upgrades don't cost $1000 per computer. Keep in mind the unlimited license availability. Costs would go down significantly. Considering this, the burden of the upgrade price is Quark's. Funny, I can get InDesign with OSX for $300.
