is when will Apple 'officially' update the mini? I am ready to buy the top model, but when I heard this I thought "well, hell, I'm not going to order now and risk getting the lower spec'd model."
So, seeing as how this news has been around for about a week, I wonder if it's backfiring for Apple and no one is buying until they update 'officially'.
This is not the first time Trent has done something like this.
Right after The Fragile [amazon.com] was released, Trent and David Bowie both put a song online from their new albums to be remixed by the public but you had to use a proprietary web based application.
it was really fun getting to mess with the tracks, and I applaud Trent for this venture. I 3 NIN.
It's great to hear you're 'in'.
I'm in too. So we should both send a letter here:

From article: "an alien message designed to last millenia should be 'inside a large number of self-replicating, self-repairing microscopic machines programmed to multiply and adapt to changing conditions', otherwise known as living cells. Are we the message?"
Remember that episode of ST:TNG where the Creators had encoded a message in DNA and then seeded life throughout the galaxy in the hopes that all the species would come together to solve the mystery? And then it backfired and they all (for the most part) were suspicious of each other and the lesson of the message was all but lost on the most of the handful of people that witnessed it.
Just thought it was interesting. BTW, ST:TNG was the BEST!
Let's see, how is Apple different than Microsoft? Let me count the ways. Open source (and giving back to the community I might add), actual innovation (real artists ship), Products people actually want to use (and competitors want to crack...) and finally, they think different (Steve Jobs himself wrote this, not a PR team).
So, draw what conclusions you like, I won't force an opinion, but take a look before you spout off more FUD. It's better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
From the Article: "preventing and prosecuting cybercrimes is now the FBI's No. 3 priority, behind anti-terrorism efforts and counterintelligence operations."
Glad to see the FBI has it's priorities in order. God forbid we start to think that our other problems are more important than some people dubbing a tape or downloading a few MP3s.
all you'll be doing is accepting MS Longhorn post hoc as satisfactory, because you have no other realistic choices of OS.
Mac OS X? Oh no, that couldn't possibly be a realistic OS option. 10.3 will be BSD 5.0 based and include features that won't be in Windows until Longhorn (possibly 2005, more like 2006). The ease of use that the Mac has always had, with KILLER free apps, AND UNIX?!....Almost no worms? Or viruses? HARDCORE uptime, you say?
I agree with your post and premise, but don't illustrate your ignorance by NOT counting one of THE most viable OS options on the market.
Linux is great, but lets face it, it's FOR geeks. Mac OS X is for everyone and just plain works.
from the article: '"Way to go, RIAA. Sue and threaten the public, your customers. I think I'll go and download," one posting on Yahoo said.'
This is not the answer. I'm not saying that the RIAA is right in claiming that the MASSIVE amount of pirating is hurting their business, but if this is the response we all start taking eventually it will. We do have to realize that it is the recording industry that signs artists, produces and records their work, and markets them to a vast audience. In a round about way, pirating music is eventually going to end up hurting us. I'm not exempt, nor do I plan to stop downloading free music period, but we can't just fight back by stealing more music. IF we continue to ramp up our efforts in a big "fuck you" to the RIAA and recording industry we'll end up with a world FULL or DRM and Longhorn/Itanium like shit. I, for one, shiver at that thought.
from the articel: 'The RIAA argued that Verizon is obligated under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act to help the music industry protect its copyrights. Verizon says it is willing to help, but argued that the law only applies to Web pages stored on its computers, not traffic on the "peer-to-peer" networks that merely travel across its wires.'
Here we see the DMCA being wielded again. We have to face it, the law is here now and they're going to use it. We have a couple of choices: accept it and learn to play by the rules it outlines, or band together (there's a hell of a lot of people that read Slashdot) and strike it down, or AT LEAST reform it. The DMCA is pure evil and until we change or destroy it we're not going to make any progress in regards to the current state of affairs. It was a way of treating a symptom (like so many things in America) and NOT a solution to the problem. BUT all of us bitching about it online and on Slashdot DOES NOTHING. We have to take action on this.
"I think a small number of users will be deterred by this effort. It's not going to come as a surprise to them the RIAA finds it unlawful," said Jonathan Band, a copyright lawyer for Morrison & Foerster.
I have a fifteen year old sister. Think about it, these kids start getting online around 10-12 and all they've EVER known is FREE MUSIC. Most of them don't know or even consider that it IS stealing. DON'T STEAL MUSIC was part of the message sent buy the RIAA (Apple is still innovating the industry, in more ways than one. Remember when the iPod first came out....) and this is something we should really think about. Are we justified in demanding lower prices? Yes. How about calling foul on the DMCA? Yes. Figuring out a new model that is beneficial to artists, consumers, and the corporations providing the content? Yes. As the law stands though, downloading music from p2p IS ILLEGAL. Are we justified in stealing? No.
Look at the new service from Apple, iTunes Music Store. I don't think Apple got it 100% correct but they've come a HELL of a lot closer than anyone else so far. Unlimited burns of tracks to CD, burn a playlist 10 times, register 3 Macs to play purchased files and be able to change which 3 Macs you have registered, unlimited ability to put your music on as many iPods as you like, and Rendezvous streaming of your entire library both on your network and across the internet. I feel the price points are pretty damn close to right....and maybe we'll see them get a little better.
I don't know exactly what point I'm trying to make but it just seems like we're all screaming "foul" on this and maybe we should re-examine the whole situation. Escalating this to an epic battle of theft, rights infringement, lawsuit, counter lawsuit, destruction of an industry just doesn't seem like the only option.
The Slashdot community could have a lot of power and a lot of voice if we could agree on something that was fair to BOTH sides and then get out in the real world and make that voice heard.

Amp Pack for iPod
·
· Score: 5, Insightful
Not only does this back pack have a pretty slick shoulder strap oriented set of controls for your iPod, with the pocket for the iPod between you and the back pack (which I find comforting, no way to lose it or have it stolen), but it also has a side entry compartment for your laptop. It's a back pack, laptop case, and iPod companion/remote. I know people who have spent $200 plus on a laptop case alone and that's a case that screams "hey look at me, I have a laptop!" I'm pretty sure they didn't skimp out on the padding and protection for the laptop either.
Something this cool (did you SEE the remote buttons on the should strap?) is worth $200 IMHO.
Uses a few Mac voices, "Victoria" included, in a few of their songs. Namely "Kathy's Song".
Damn April/Apple Fool's day! I read the whole article thinking "cool..." then i listened to the audio sample....that bastard!;)
OS X is the perfect marriage between a simple, intuitive, aesthetically marvelous end user interface and the power, stability, and hardcore good geekness of UNIX. Furthermore, the OS is designed to run almost absolutely flawlessly on Apple hardware. So what do you get? You get a Mac, the best computer on the planet, period.
Someone figured out how to put Mac OS 9.2 on something else....I think that's really cool, and OS X would be cool too....This will let others get a taste of what an awesome OS it is and further propel them to want the real thing.
HAHA, the Mac will eventually dominate the planet as planned! It's almost too easy.....
ps. my first post!
