  1. S-Video VS. Composite? on Forty-two Inch Plasma Monitor · · Score: 3, Insightful

I don't really trust a review that: A: Doesn't talk about the longevity problems with plasma displays (they have circuitry built in to compensate for the wearing out display elements, but it only lasts so long, some folks say ~3 years, but I'd say that's pessimisting) B: Says the S-Video input had WORSE picture quality as compared to Composite. Sure, it could be a problem with this particular display model, but they didn't even comment on how *strange* that is. The whole thing is fishy.

Contrary to this was the exciting thing Toshiba did with the Libretto 50CT when they ran out of Pentium 75 chips... they started putting in P120s downclocked to 75. Unfortunately I didn't get one of those, but I *was* able to OC my 75 to 100... too bad someone stepped on my libretto and cracked the screen, eh?

Actually, much as it pains me to say this, hacking *can* affect the bottom line of a company, in this case. It's a well known fact that Microsoft is losing money when they sell an X-Box... total up the parts cost yourself. Sure, they're losing less money than they used to, but building a video game system from essentially off the shelf parts isn't cheap.

So what does this mean? "Hackers" who buy an X-Box just to run home-brew software, and not any MS-Licensecd games... is only actually making MS lose money.

Moral of the story? Buy X-Boxes and don't buy games. =]

Actually, it looks like this whole thing was a misunderstanding, and involved screw-ups by people on both sides. And believe me, I'm the first one who'll go on about how awful the DMCA is, but I think this was just overreaction on one side and misbehavior on the other. But... well, we'll never know the real story.

  16. Re:Where to stick your flywheel.... on NYC Subways Testing Flywheels · · Score: 1

I'd tend to disagree. Placing the flywheel in the station would be just the same as the electrical regenerative braking they were describing, if my understanding is right. Unfortunately, since I doubt the engineers are going to post here, it'll just be a matter of opinion. Still, if they're in the trains, then there's less distance for the energy to travel, but if they're in EVERY station, then the distance to travel wouldn't be too bad. Hmm, on second thought, they could be anywhere, as long as they're close to (or in) the trains.
