If so many people are so seriously offended by this term then why is it in widepsread use among the black youth of many communities?
Some black youth feel that appropiating this term and using it as a colloquialism is "keeping it real". In other words, they are not conforming to societal expectation that this word is to be abhorred.
Other black youth embrace this term as a way of telling the world that they will not be the victims of emotional racism. Sort of a names will never hurt way of thinking.
Other black youth are just plain ignorant and don't have a concious reason for using the term.
I don't think black people will jump up and attack all white people who use the term. I grew up with some white people who "were keeping it real" as much as any black person, probably more so. I guess some yuppie, preppy white kids would call them wiggers. At any rate, race was never an issue with these guys; They were part of the community and were even the recipient of this kind of greeting ("what's up my nigger")!
I think a black person would object to a non-black person usurping this term without actually being "privileged", if you know what I mean.
It's my understanding that the Linux TCP/IP stack is the weakest of the three major stacks in present use
1) If the sentence starts with "It's my understanding..."
the impression I have gotten is that the Linux stack is the odd man out
2) Toss in comments based upon "the impression I have gotten..."
The TCP/IP stack is an area of development where a common code base is a valuable thing, enablng all machines on the net to speak a common language. It's an area where the GPL, which tries to act as a crowbar to force all code everywhere wide open, ends up being very divisive. Because Linux ends up always having to play catch-up on it's own implementation, the Linux stack will always be the least compatible with everyone else. This is viewed as a real problem, except, of course, for those people who hope there soon won't be anything on the net except Linux.
You've nailed it on the head! Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond are probably slapping their desks while reading this and exclaiming "See...do you see what I was talking about!"
I wonder whether the initial advantages of choosing Solid will outweigh the cost of choosing a new DB? I guess it depends on how he designed his application. If he was doing anything funky with Solid's API he may have created a headhache for himself.
Word and all the other Office applications have improved so considerably that Microsloth has now created a new group to fix all the viruses created by "Office Developers" (geez, can you imagine having that for a job title) that are embedded in these wondrous applications.
Yep, I sure love it when my application is inundated with needless "features" and is about as open as an CIA project meeting.
I don't know about you, but I'll stick with the limiting applications like Star Office. What ever will I do without all those annoying evil macros and viruses now?
Uh, excuse me. Windows computers comprise 90% of the market. If you can get on a Windows networked computer, I can assure you that you can "pretty much do anything." Unlike you, the previous poster has enough brains to challenge idiotic comments from Mr. Garfinkel. To purport that Linux systems are the target choice of crackers without submitting any supporting information is ludicrous and is not worthy of intellectual debate.
1) The hardware vendor is supplying it's own drivers, and get this, with full source code
Does it not make sense for the guys who make the devices to make drivers as well? That way poor Donald Becker doesn't have to do EVERYTHING.
2) Fosters an attitude of Linux acceptance in the hardware community
Isn't this what all Linux users are after? I for one will be glad when I don't have to check hardware compatibility lists before buying a piece of equipment for my Linux box.
3) Who says 1 driver is enough?
I use Donald's driver for the 3c589d PCMCIA card and I haven't had any problems yet. If someone throws me a benchmark that shows 3Com's driver boosts performance by 20%, whose driver do you think I will use.
4) It gives the Linux whiners more fodder to complain about
Let's face it. Some of you people will never be satisfied.
I just emailed 3Com a letter congratulating them on this move. The previous poster is right. If they get feedback from users, and more importantly, an increase in sales, not only will 3com better support Linux users in the future, but other hesitant companies will follow suit.
I just read the thread and I have to say that Andy Tannenbaum comes off as one huge jerk. Who the hell does he think he is with his smug condescension? Oh, he's some big, bad professor who's put together 3 OS's so he knows everything. Big fucking deal. Who the fuck is he to tell anyone that they would get an F because they disagreed with him on his theory about micro-kernel superiority? I'm glad Linus ripped him a new asshole. He needed another orifice to speak from.
Oh, and I like the way he tried to kiss up to Linus with his little European brotherhood ploy. Andy, you may be from Europe but you are in no way related to Linus.
I hope that when you are shot in the head and paralyzed by your spouse's lover and left to fend for your crippled self that you enjoy the same loving attitude that you display so well now.
I advise you in the interim to establish your own fiefdom on some undiscovered island so that you can only contribute to those things which you actually "use". I can only imagine how advanced your civilization will turn out.
Sorry. I disagree. I have no sympathy because this guy is a teenager. Our society has suffered quite a bit by coddling teenagers who break the law.
The simple fact is if we are to further this information/technology paradigm, integrity of data and systems is sacrosanct. You achieve this by prosecuting all who impede this goal. This wild west mentality where you just do as you please in the face of established law has to stop.
If you are looking for equity in law, please exhume my corpse in a 1000 years when you find it.
Redhat is trying to bill itself as a service company, rather than a software company. I wonder if Sun will prevent them from packaging StarOffice with their distributions. If they do, they're fools. The only way to get people interested is to make it easily available.
Converting the file formats into XML is probably the most intriguing part of the announcement. Of course the extent to which that will matter depends on the state of XML parsers. I'm wondering if a certain behemoth's parser in the NW will work on Sun's format...
This article was very refreshing in what it didn't say, rather than what it does say. It didn't rehash much of the boring mumbo-jumbo that most people have heard a million times. It gave us a small glimpse of Linus as a normal person.
Some of Linus' musings were actually thought provoking. The fact that he felt empathy for the richest and probably most hated man in the world illuminates his character. I'm sure he knows better than anyone that Bill is probably sitting in a conference room thinking up ways to destroy Linus and Linux.
Some of you may equate this article as hero worship. I, for one, admire Linus but do not consider him to be a personal hero. I usually look closer to home for my heroes. I merely think Linus, through his natural and unaffected disposition, won over the author. I mean, can you image Bill Gates letting his guard down long enough to slip into a sauna or hand his baby over to a journalist. Not unless Bill owned the company the journalist worked for, which is how Bill would like to model the world.
It figures an eponymously named anonymous loser like yourself would have the balls to criticize someone else. I think it's fair to say that you don't post your online information because you haven't accomplished jackshit.
You cynical bastards are quite amusing. It'll be interesting to see how cynical you are 20 years into your dead end careers. I'm sure the "HTML programmer" will be doing quite fine.
There are some things that Belgians should be locked up for, like your weird obsession with mussels and french fries with mayonnaise. What the heck is that all about?
Hey, great note! It's refreshing to hear from soneone who really knows what he's talking about.
FYI, I understand Guiness in the bottle has a higher alcohol content although it doesn't carbonation cartridge. You won't get the cascade effect...but hey, after 3 or 4 you won't even care!
After reading several dozen posts about this reminiscing of Wired, I find it highly amusing that a good portion of you people suggest that Wired was beneath you. This post-cool attitude that many of you geeks cling to makes me laugh my ass off. This constant desire to be one step ahead of the masses when in reality, 99% of us comprise the masses is sheer lunacy. I don't understand the need to knock everything that came before you. My comments are not specific to Wired. I have seen this attitude directed towards numerous entities, persons, etc.
I made it to the 13th key. I've always been curious about what came after because I heard that a cadillac appeared after the 15th key. I would love to find a list of all the items that show up in the game.
"Americans invented the 'net" "Vast majority of American's are clueless"
Both of you idiots are morons. You are one step above back-water rednecks waving the confederate flag or shite muslims on a silly jihad. You actually think you are imbued with something special because you had the "fortune" of being born where you mother spit you out ? Are you that retarded ?
At least this Canadien shmuck has it almost right. It's all about accomplishments. Who gives a damn where your heart surgeon is from or where the software that runs the friggin hospital is developed when you are about to have open heart surgery.
Do yourselves a favor and get off your asses and stop resting on the laurels of what other people have done who happened to be born in the same country.
If your country is so damn superior, stay the fuck off the Internet.
God, I can't believe people still use that antiquated cracker form of writing.
Hmmm....I'm wondering if the previous poster is what you would call "a script kiddie". Probably not though. He's too "31337" for that.

Clues on when to ignore "expert" advice:

3) Wrap up with a resounding jackass comment.

I'm in the same camp with you. If my employer wants me to stop bs'ing then they better give me some damn interesting work.
By the way, what is PHB?
Yeah, I got one of those warning pages when I clicked on a link to http://www.suck.com without thinking.
You gotta be careful at work.
Uh, which one are you referring to? Based on past actions I think there is room for debate.

To the person who moderated the parent post as flamebait:
Get off you BSD high horse and get a life, you little piece of shit.
I hope that when you are shot in the head and paralyzed by your spouse's lover and left to fend for your crippled self that you enjoy the same loving attitude that you display so well now.

I'm LMAO @ Marj Jo Foley's comment:
They like to highlight things that make Microsoft look stupid.
This coming from the Microsoft mouthpiece has to be taken for what it's worth.
There are some things that Belgians should be locked up for, like your weird obsession with mussels and french fries with mayonnaise. What the heck is that all about?
Your comment makes no sense. Who are you to bash anyone especially since you don't explain how the previous poster is a "luser"?
It figures an anonymous bastard like yourself would post such trash.
