has to be Tom Christiansen under Best Newbie Helper. Unless they count his books as being a newbie helper, Tom Christiansen is about as helpful as throwing a bag of salt on an open wound.
I was beginning to think InfoWorld was a lost cause. This is the same magazine that employs that visionary Bob Metcalfe. You'll remember him as the knucklehead who knocked Linux because it's based on "30 year old technology". I tried to call Bob to complain but I guess he doesn't use phones for similar reasons.
you can LOL all you want, but the previous poster is right and you're wrong. If users cared about os stabilitiy, Microsoft would not be in the position it is now.
You make the error in assuming that all users are like you. You are wrong. You are a blip compared to the rest of the computing population.
And one more thing, calling someone a Microsoft drone because you disagree with their opinion is a step below calling someone a Nazi. It just makes your argument look weak when you stoop to that level.
I can hardly believe your troll of a post was moderated up to a five...here, of all places. Seems to me you must've brought your friends with you. Either that or you've found out how to hack Slashdot.
The poster that you are lamely criticizing offered an honest opinion that I agree with and so do others, evidently. Not everyone in slashdot is a blithering Linux zealot. Some of us are objective about its strengths and weaknesses even while using it and admiring it.
Linux will always be behind the eightball until people learn that computers should not have to be mastered in order to do computing. Linux elitists are fearful that Linux will become Windowized if it becomes too easy to set up and use. That is absurd. Linux will alwayd be open and free to tinker with. All the window dressing that is needed to move it to the desktop can be peeled away. If you prefer using a CLI, then you can you do so.
As an FYI, complaining about a posts moderation is about as cheesy as you can get. Not everyone shares your worldview. Stop complaining about it and try to bring us over to your sphere if you disagree with post.
Stories exactly like this will spur PHB's to run out and purchase Win2000 and all the 2000 certified software in the hopes that it will absolve them from security problems. Microsoft should be excoriated for releasing insecure systems and keeping them closed, yet Microsoft is in a win win situation. The people running these sites are probably married to the idea of a Microsoft platform and will no doubt move up to its latest incarnation.
I agree 100%. I wouldn't be able to write this post if it weren't for Dave Hind's great work. I would like to thank Dave and other folks working in Open Source for their high quality work and their dedication. One of the perceptions people have about Open Source is that it equates to less polished work. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's nice to see Slashdot put these awards in place because we really need to start recognizing and promoting the people who make it easy for us to do our thing.
but they never promised that they wouldn't alter the image
I love this kind of sophist viewpoint. Does the constitution specifically say that it's wrong to abort babies? No, but rational people can agree that it is a tragedy, irrespective of your opinion on whether it should be restricted.
CBS is clearly playing in a gray area that may come back to haunt them.
who cares if there's a backdoor if NSA is the only one using the "distribution". SC has probably been contracted to modify the kernel just for NSA. As such, I doubt there will be a backdoor.
You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and distribute such modifications or work...
Without trying to sound like Bill Clinton, I guess it all boils down to what the definition of distribution is. Is a modified kernel that is only used by one entity considered a distribution?

Which one? Other than cute, anecdotal stories, what is your proof? I wonder if you've even used "BSD". Sorry for being cynical, but I grow weary of "experts" who do nothing but regurgitate what they hear in newsgroups or slashdot without supplying links to corroborate their statements.
why should it be publicly available if they intend to use it inhouse? If Joe Blow makes changes to his kernel do we expect him to release them under the GPL? No. If Joe Blow makes changes and sells the modified kernel, then yes, the expectation is that he will GPL his changes.
Any changes that they make to the kernel and surrounding source will have to be released as open source unless they think they can successfully challenge the GPL in court.
Not if they only plan to release it inhouse. If they're not releasing a commercial distribution they're free to do with it as they see fit.
Also - @home has a strict AUP *against* security scans. They would be in violation of their own AUP to take action like what this guy has mentioned in the article.
@home can do any thing it wants. It owns the damn ISP. You, on the other hand, are a customer. The rules apply to you. How do you think they enforce their own rules? By guessing?
there is no legal basis for not doing it. It you had read the UDP-FAQ, you would see that UUNet thought they could sue their way out of the UDP only to learn that they had no legal standing.
I'm all for UDPs. If ISPs don't want to do their part in maintaining a viable, functioing community, then they deserve a little internet justice.
Concidentally is this legal? What happens if for example I am a researcher and want to send a usenet posting to someone and I use the @home service what then? Guess I'm screwed by the "wonderful" community.
More accurately, you would be screwed by @home. They've been warned many times. You can't have your cake and eat it too, people. If you want to stop spam, these are the types of actions that will motivate ISPs to take action.
Thanks Mathieu. We will support your company. I've been dying for more Linux games and I think that you'll see that the Linux community will reward those companies that do more than talk a good game.
I, for one, am not a big fan of certification. I think the old, trusty interview process should suffice. Any knucklehead can get a certification. Interviewing tells you so much more about a potential candidate.
I work for a guy who wants to get certified in COBOL ?!? I asked him if there were a market for certified COBOL programmes and he replied "I don't know but it's gotta look good on the resume". This is the exact attitude that I despise. People looking for certification are looking for an end to achieve their means. I'm more interested in the person who realizes that life is an ongoing learning process that never ends.
thanks for opening my eyes. I too fell victim to those urban legends. Those links you supplied were very informative and interesting. I find it striking that someone wrote a paper 30 years ago extolling the virtues of a graphical user system! Personal computers were well over a decade in the future at that point. The foresight displayed by that paper is truly remarkable.
It's unfortunate that the true "innovators", as a certain businessman is fond of saying, will not be recognized for their achievemnents. I guess that's how the cookie crumbles, eh?

Oh please. Don't jump to conclusions based on the alleged actions of one AOL moderator. Did the person report the alleged action? I have no confidence in the media. For all I know, the reporter is making it up.
Looks like Caldera != Caldera Systems. I wish one of them would change their damn name so I don't look stupid again. (I know I've just set myself up for nice flamebait)

Thanks for making me laugh Slashdot gang!
Before Roblimo reposts this or deletes this from the main page? I say half and hour.

viewers that it was doing this? If not, they're setting a dangerous precedent.

Yes, we know BSD is more secure.

who are they going to sue and who is hurt? Seems to me @Home is the one hurting people by allowing spam to come out of their domain.

Couldn't wait for the copies of their press release on the Microsoft settlement to cool off. Guess you gotta capitalize when you look your best.
