  1. Re:I'm Not Sure I Buy His Analysis on Virtualization Decreases Security · · Score: 1

#1) The simple fact that the alternative to virtualization is separate physical hardware, where NO amount of knowledge can allow you to break-out of the hardware, and gain control of the 10 other systems.

Are you completely sure? If the computers share resources (e.g. mounted directories from a common file server), there might still be ways to "propagate" root access from one host to another. Some ideas:

    * If you manage to happen a central server giving updates to other computers, you can manipulate the update data those other computers get.

    * If any user has shell access to several computers using a shared home directory and a shared directory with execution rights (not necessarily writable by the user), someone gaining root access on one computer might utilize that user account to gain root access to the other computers as well.

Now neither of the above scenarios may apply to your case, but then, that's just two things I quickly came up with, and I'm not a security expert, so I'm sure true experts can come up with much more. The point is, just running on different hardware doesn't necessarily mean that "NO amount of knowledge can allow you to break-out of the hardware, and gain control of the 10 other systems."

Yes, this post is copyrighted (through the simple fact that I wrote it just now), and therefore disallowing any copyrighted stuff on the net would mean it couldn't be displayed.

Indeed, the theory that all people die is a bad hypothesis, because you can't falsify it: No matter how long you wait, you'll never be able to disprove that the person will eventually die, even if that person is actually immortal. For this reason the hypothesis that this person will die is unscientific. Therefore basic science tells us that we should assume all living people will live forever. Note that the latter is easily falsified. If you stay ethical, you only have to wait for someone's death; if you don't care about ethics, you can just cause such a death.
