  1. Re:Didn't help me with my Type I on Caffeine vs Type II Diabetes · · Score: 1

I got Type 1 Diabetes five years ago at age 30. I've definitely never skimped on coffee, and it didn't stop me, either. Not too surprising, since while the symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 are similar (i.e., high blood glucose), the causes are different. Type 1 is caused by an autoimmune attack on the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas. Type 2 is a disease of insulin resistance, and is typically correlated with obesity.

As for benefits of caffeine for Type 1 Diabetes, there was a study published in Diabetes Care 23:455-459, 2000 demonstrating improved recognition of hypoglycemia. I've noticed this for myself: When I'm feeling the effects of my morning coffee, I seem to notice low blood sugar earlier than if I haven't had caffeine. Hypoglycemia feels (to me) similar to caffeine jitters, so I can see where caffeine might help that way.

Or maybe it's just that if I skip coffee for a day, I'm too busy with a headache to notice my sugar is going low...

Wow! Haven't seen--or thought about--one of those in years. That's the almost-as-good-as-a-PC that got me through college. I was hot s*** with my 256k RAM, dual floppies, and green monochrome monitor.

I remember ditching the bundled Valdocs program (spreadsheet + word processor), since it only ran on the Epson and I couldn't use it on the university's lab PCs. Switched to having (WordStar|WordPerfect|SuperCalc) in one 5.25" drive, and my data disk in the other, and toting the disks around campus.

Come to think of it, that QX-10 might still be in my parents' garage...

  4. TiVO with no phone line? on Home-Grown TiVo Stories? · · Score: 1

It's cell phones only at my house. I know I can use a wireless USB adapter with a series 2 TiVO, but...

the fine print says I'll still need a phone line to do the initial setup call.

Anyone know if I can use the USB network adapter and the right dialing prefix (,#401 I think) even for the initial setup? I'll probably build my own MythTV box if I can't get by without a phone line. The geek factor is appealing, too, but with non-techies in the house having to use the PVR too, it'd be nice to have something that Just Works.

  5. Re:Surprised they are going to do the voices on Simpson's Cast On Bravo This Sunday · · Score: 1

I noticed that during the interviews with the characters (after the interviews with the actors), everyone else was shown on camera doing their character voice(s), but we never actually got to see Julie Kavner do Marge, Patty or Selma. Instead, they showed clips from the show during her characters' interviews.

I saw Julie on a late-night show years ago, and she refused to talk like Marge--said it would "ruin it" for the audience, or something like that. I wondered if Julie's off-camera-ness tonight had something to do with this, but then I noticed she had left about halfway through the show, so maybe her character interviews were done separately. Hmm...
