Excuse me? I had a YDL on install on my PS3 and it wasn't retroactive or Unilateral. you had to agree to do it, and in fact if you upgrade an OtherOS equipped PS3 to modern firmware it will warn you what will happen and asks you to confirm twice, not just once as it would normally.

Your choice, you can keep OtherOS and lose PSN or vice versa.

Sony really should have lost that lawsuit over removing a feature from the old models.

No, they shouldn't because the actual choice is the users. You can keep Linux, but then because you're not running a recent firmware they don't "trust" your PS3 so you lose PSN access. That's it. You have a choice, Linux on the PS3 (which wasn't all that special anyway) or PSN. The update that removes Linux capability warns you in no uncertain terms what it does, and requests confirmation, twice, before it does it.

because over time, the company releases systems with fewer and fewer features.

Yes, cost reduction...since if people aren't willing to buy your console at 299 one way to get it down in price is to remove the discret S-video jacks, and then perhaps the serial port for the link cable no one has, and then perhaps remove the parallel port which only game cheating devices (some of which could be used to play "backups") connected.

With the PS3, the biggest complaint about it at launch was the price. And now the biggest complaint about the new models is the lack of backwards compatibility/SACD/built in card reader/4 USB ports. All of which went bye bye to get the cost down.

Yes, Sony does shut down older PS2 game servers which is the ONLY way to see that DNAS error since DNAS is a PS2 thing....if they're not all that popular and after a few years. SCEA can't help it if you were so busy playing same-screen SNES multiplayer on an SDTV to not get your PS2 till after a few servers got shut down.

There ARE PS2 games with online mutliplayer still functional.

People sometimes get confused on this but, ALL PS3's have PSone compatibility. That is entirely software.

And it always makes me grumble that some of the people who complained about the high price on early backwards compatible PS3's...are sometimes the same people complaining about the removal of such...which was done to appease those grousing about the price. "People don't need BD, they still have PS2's..that will make the PS3 cheaper"
But a part of this that I find highly interesting that there's no mention of physical media.
Sony's PDF and TFA mentions a Blu-Ray Drive, which I expected. It also discusses Gaikai for the purpose of game demos, which makes sense. For example the Demo of the HD remake of Beyond Good & Evil is the same size of the full game. Why make downloading demos time-consuming...just stream the demo, then they can download the game.

It also mentions being able to access the web browser from WITHIN a game, which will be a freaking godsend that I wished I had years ago.

Console-only means no keyboard and no mouse which means not a real MMORPG.

Since when does a game being an MMORPG absolutely require a keyboard and mouse. All a game requires to be an MMORPG are two things: being massively multiplayer online and being an RPG.

I've played 4 console games that fit that criteria, none of which "required" a keyboard or mouse. Although I did and do play them with a keyboard attached.

Everquest Online Adventures: Fantasy MMORPG set 500 years before EQ1...no this game is NOT the Diablo clone, that is Champions of Norrath. EQOA is a true MMORPG, the servers only shut down just last year. The world is absolutely seamless unless you direct teleport between coaches or zones (Or die and get returned to your last bind point), you will NEVER see a load screen. I walked/swam from Fayspires to Qeynos, no load screen. The game did support USB keyboard for game control and chat, but also had an on-screen keyboard and quick chat commands.

Final Fantasy XI: Fantasy cross-platform MMORPG, PS2/PS3, PC and Xbox players all play on the same servers. The game supports all keyboard + Mouse + controller control schemes on PS2/PS3 and PC at least. Though nobody, not even the PC players used mice, and even they bought dualshocks for movement. Also have an onscreen keyboard available and if I remember some quick chat functionality.

FreeRealms: Family friendly MMORPG with lots of varying gameplay. Any game that uses text input on the PS3 automatically supports any supported bluetooth/USB keyboard device, including USB keyboards, the official chatpad(and any other bluetooth keyboard). There's also quick chat and on-screen keyboards. The game also has built in voice chat, but only for groups.

DC Universe Online: Superhero MMORPG, though the game is cross-platform, PC and PS3 owners play on different servers as far as I can tell. As with FreeRealms has the same support for keyboards, quick-chat and on-screen keyboard. It also has built in voice chat with Local, group and guild voice chat channels.

In other words, it's not 1999 anymore and consoles like the old PS2 had USB and consoles like the PS3 have USB and Bluetooth for a reason.

Joysticks are harder to control in such small, quick movements with only a thumb.

For aiming, yes..it can be difficult...one does get better at it with practice though. It sometimes depends on the game. Timesplitters is one console FPS that deserved mouse support and didn't have it, because of the fast paced gameplay....the original entries in the SOCOM series...because of their slow paced realism...not so much, The newer SOCOM's have been COD'd a bit.

But for movement give me an analog stick or even a joypad over WASD anyday.
