That tax thing in the UK is not an issue anymore, Sony didn't allow the PS3 to boot Linux because of that.
And this time, unlike the PS2, Linux is installable at launch with no additional hardware required.
consoles with internet access and browsers are hardly new.
With the Saturn it was an expensive addon, the dreamcast came with one but lacked USB, with the PS2 it was an addon, either the BBN or Linux kit. But with the PS3, it's built right in from the start, not counting Linux.
I'm surprised no one's tried to walk you through setting up a telnet or ssh daemon so they could remotely login to your PS3 and get their questions answered.
I agree. I've been asked what Linux on the PS2 looks like and I say: It looks like Linux, RH6 to be precise, (though I've got plenty installed that isn't included in the base distro)
I'd swear there was someone somewhere who did a cat/proc/cpuinfo and then posted a screenshot. Showed to hardware threads for the Cell, running at 3.2 GHz as we know. I think it was in one of the Linux threads on ps3forums.com
I sure would like to personally see more info about performance. First thing I'd do is switch to XFCE or fluxbox.
I know! People have been telling the new to Linux people installing it on the PS3's to create non-root users, but they're so eager to try it out and the guru's so eager to ask tons of questions that it doesn't get done.
I wouldn't say it's useless without accelrated graphics, a PS2 Linux kit has only "limited" hardware acceleration and it can do all sorts of stuff. The basic everyday desktop stuff that people do should work fine. Firefox, thunderbird, gaim, GIMP, OpenOffice that sort of thing.

Video of Fedora On PS3
·
· Score: 4, Informative
From reading the various message boards, most of the people installing Fedora and posting about it are Linux newbies being walked through installs and setup by Linux guru's without PS3's.
I know Ethernet works, WiFi apparently doesnt. Some people had sound issues, (I bet they need to configure ALSA or something) I saw an X conf file somewhere, monitors are supported. ah here we are, output from the ps3videomode utility
The boot/install other OS feature is in the Cross Media bar interface, so yes, it's relatively easy. I've read that you can actually set it so that Linux becomes the default boot environment, which will be a heck of a lot more convenient (when I finally get a PS3) than on the PS2 which requires the "magic" RTE DVD to boot into Linux from being turned off.
There's a few non Linux users with PS3's who have been walkthroughed the Fedora install on various message boards, just so the Linux guys without PS3's can ask them questions.
I really don't know why you're so skeptical, this is not the first game console from Sony that supports LInux, officially mind you, this isn't some sort of hack.
Since Rocketboom was more like a newsmagazine she didn't really have an opinion, she was just a newsreader. Not that much different from Meredith Viera, or Katie Couric.
Rocketboom didn't belong to her, and was more akin to a newsmagazine. She was the newsreader, so it is not surprising she's going to be doing similar on TV.
No really, it was a bid deal when she left Rocketboom, which itself was a big thing in vodcasts.
Then again I have a PSP and Rocketboom was one of the first vodcasts to have a PSP version one could download directly using the PSP's browser. Nowadays with the RSS and the/VIDEO folder that isn't picky about video without the sony atom in the header, one can just subscribe to the iPod version.
she really is famous in the video blog set. I think Rocketboom was the #1 videoblog on iTunes and other places that rate videocats/vodcasts in part thanks to her.
It has USB ports for a reason, you know.

I think your video was a good idea, it would probably help show non users of Linux that it's not as geekily scary as they might have heard.
And like was said, one could always do another one just for us geeks.

For comparison, yet again, on a PS2 Linux kit bogomips are: 392.39

there was Slashdot article on Friday with links to how to do it.

Download the otheros.self file from SCEfoo,
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/
download FC5 PPC DVD,
download the addon's disk (theres some detailed instructions on it too)
ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Sony-PS3/
and install.
You can find more detailed instructions in various places on the net
In a about a week you'll be able to buy Yellow Dog 5.0 for the PS3, supposedly it has 1 click install.

Cygwin includes a X server so you can use it's ssh to login to your Linux box and use TB. :-)
Of course I remember the PS2 Linux kit, I have one.
This is different, it requires no additional hardware, is free, and is available at launch.
You'll find Gauntlet in the Midway Collections because Gauntlet was by Atari (Midway)
Genny Gauntlet was Gauntlet "4"
The PS3's built in web browser is more likely based on Netfront code.
Inaccurate statement.
What you mean to say is that X has no hardware acceleration, which is not the same as "the graphics chip won't work"

It's the sex AND the fashion. Other stuff too, but the sex industry and fashion industry are probably the biggest in SL.
There are places in SL where you can rampage and kill. Shooty shooty bang bang
