There sure seems to be plenty. Hang around the Reuters region and welcome centers and you'll see them, and writers/college professers bringing their classes in too.
There's lots of regular newbies too, I see "Ruth" a lot lately.

Umm no, ever see a PS2 HD? Bog standard ATA connector on it, because the interface to the HD on the Network adaptor (which supplies power and data to the HD, is bog standard.
256MB should be enough for basic home PC uses. I've got a PS2 Linux kit and it's pretty useful even with the RAM limitation. I've got the latest Enligtenment running on it (the same one that the PS3 will run) and it's not that bad system resources wise. Or one could install fluxbox, xfce or fvwm instead.
They probably didn't want to segment the market any more than they did. I have to admit, I was expecting the PS3 to have 512MB main RAM.
Then again the local Wal-Mart still sells cheap PC's with only 256MB.
Right you have this functionality, but in an small box that sits next to the TV?
My best guess is that part of Sony's strategy is to use the PS3 to reduce sales of "second wintel PC's" in the home, thereby cutting into Microsofts core business, OEM OS sales
Frakking SoG, I still run my kit using NTSC (Xgsx fixed for 640x448 rather than the default 610x404 at least)
For my sake I consider the $200 I paid for the kit, money well spent.
I personally thought the YDL decision was pretty obvious after some thinking. They used Red Hat for the PS2, why not use Fedora on the PS3 with a distro that already has PPC support.
They've got a package list up on the YDL website now so you could check to see if there are any accelerated X packages. Hmmm, don't see it listed but I thought I had read somewhere that X on the PS3 would be accelerated
What's interesting about the list is what's there and what isn't there.
Mono's there RXVT isn't No nethack or ffmpeg either. pygtk and pyqt but no wxwidgets/wxpython no faac, faad or mp3 libs from what I could tell, no xmms either.
I believed it was willful ignorance when the parent could have read the information I posted, on the YDL website.....two weeks ago.
The YDL website has been linked to in the various PS3 Linux articles posted on Slashdot. In fact it was the Oct 17 article posted here that led me to the info I posted.
This does not take into account that SCE has been saying for months that the Linux for PS3 release would have the full dev toolchain, i.e. gcc etc. As did the PS2 Linux kit.
I do also wish some people would leave commenting on the usefulness of Linux on the PS2 to those who actually own kits. I wouldn't consider the thing gimped when one can actually compile recent GIMP code on it., or your own code. No you can't just make a disc to hand off to a regular PS2 owner but that's not a biggie. The PS2 Linux kit was probably best used for ones portfolio, or to do a prototype to show to a publisher
Unless it alows for homebrew development this is pretty pointless...
What part of the following do you not understand?
Under basic agreement with SCEI, Terra Soft was granted a unique opportunity to develop and bring to market a complete Linux OS for PLAYSTATION 3. In development of Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, Terra Soft integrated and enhanced code from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, SCEI , and Fedora in order to offer the following: - kernel 2.6.16 - gcc 4.1.1 and glibc 2.4 - Cell SDK 1.1 - OpenOffice.org 2.0.2 - FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0 - Nautilus 2.14... and a suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and Networking applications.
Parent was refferring to Apple in the 90's as was I. When they weren't selling many Qudras, performas or whatever other names apple had for their overpriced machines.
No what tanked Apple is that no one wanted to pay apple's inflated prices for small perceived dfferences in ease of use. As one computer pundit put it, when you can get 80% of the functionality for 50% of the price.

Yes yes, we all know it runs Linux, it was announced ages ago, the actual distro was announced last month.
Kai Staats of Terra Soft, that makes the Yellow Dog Linux distro for PS3 has stated that he's using the PS3 as his primary computer/
What do you do with it?
anything you want.
I've got a PS2 with a Linux kit installed and I've:
read my e-mail
browsed websites
used IRC
and IM
played Nethack, both on it and using telnet
done word processing with Abiword
edited photos from the digital camera with the GIMP
listened to my music.
encoded video for the PSP
played with Python
installed dosbox and playes DOS version of Rogue.
In other words, I use my PS2 like any other computer.

A la:
"Hey I need to use the computer"
"I'm going to be using it for a while"
"I need to use it now"
"What for."
"I wanted to read my e-mail and IM some friends"
"You do know the PS3 can do that"
"Oh yeah."
Call them up, they did it for me. I think whether they do it or not depends on the model and manufacturing date of the PS2.
A few games? Here's the list:
2 _network_games

That's not a few, and the majority of good ones require broadband. If you're on dialup your pickings will be slim
You're forgetting the PS3 does more than the PS2 does.
Download Yellow Dog Linux in a few weeks and it has all the functionality of a PS2 equipped with a Linux kit.
It does PS1/PS2 games too.
Music, photo and video.
There's a built in web browser
Built in WiFi
Built in ethernet
Built in card reader.
It does more so it costs more
That's Sony BMG, the evil Sony kid.
PS3 Sony is SCEA, the non-evil Linux loving Sony kid.
Yeah Sony's a company fighting itself some of the time.
20 or 60 GB depending on the model. The HD is user upgradable, uses standard 2.5" laptop drives.
I don't think there's a SUSE with Cell support.
Frakking SoG, I still run my kit using NTSC (Xgsx fixed for 640x448 rather than the default 610x404 at least)

Unlikely to happen, IIRC a PS2 Linux kit running Apache survived a Slashdotting.

They altered the hint, but you press the same buttons.
It's a big selling point for purchase justification:
Hey mom, it isn't just a games machine, I can do my homework.
There's a lot of "second PC's" being sold, the PS3 could make a dent in that:
"Hey, we don't need another windows machine, when our PS3 can do double duty"
What part of the following do you not understand?
I run Linux on MIPS you insensitive clod!
You do know that copying the saved game to prevent it's deletion is frowned upon and is referred to as savescumming, right?
Thank you for an informational reply that explains things well. Now all this "fuss" makes sense.
Does that really matter? Is it that big of a problem? Is different bad?
Parent was refferring to Apple in the 90's as was I. When they weren't selling many Qudras, performas or whatever other names apple had for their overpriced machines.
Hmm I wonder if it would be possible to run OSX on top of Mac-on-Linux on a PS3 running Yellow Dog.
No what tanked Apple is that no one wanted to pay apple's inflated prices for small perceived dfferences in ease of use. As one computer pundit put it, when you can get 80% of the functionality for 50% of the price.
gphoto's been in RH since version 6 at least.
